There are few Cotton Woods where I pick. Most of the trees are Tulip Popular, Cherry, and Maple. Most of them are alive.

Go out as often as possible. I go out in the rain and the day after and the day after and the day after. I have 12 patches in total for all species and it took me ten years to find them all. Since that's the case when the season hits I'm hopping from one patch to another monitoring maturity. Today all patches have been checked and picked. I'm waiting/hoping for a second flush. We've had the rain, we need cool temps.

Don't give up. I ended up walking miles before I even found one on the tracks. It was a fluke that I found my big patch in such little time. But usually I end up walking and hunting for hours (6+) and only find a couple if any at all.

Finding a "patch" the first time is the hard part. I always say, "know the habitat, match the conditions, find the mushroom." Chances are if lqd goes back to his tree that yielded 90 morels next year, provided the timing is right, he will find morels. IME, that's the way it works. I've picked certain patches for 10 years. Other patches, if conditions change enough, do not fruit consistently. There is a section of "tracks" (actually converted now into a greenway for bicyclists and walkers) that consistently yields Morchella esculenta and has for over 20 years. I've picked them there in the past a couple of times, but after I found my "own" patches I leave that section for others.

Depends. The UP in Michigan can pick into June I think. If conditions are right we can pick until the end of May.
I am so happy for you!!!!!!! En-joy!

I picked my last morels this season on May 19th and 20th. About a third had gone bad in the field, approximately 32.
This guy was trying to commit suicide in a well. Poor bastard.
One last plate.
54 picked on the 19th and 10 on the 20th. YTD 218
That may sound like a lot but the tiny Grays don't amount to much even if they do taste good.
