Who are your philosophical influences?
    #12417163 - 04/18/10 08:46 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

I've seen a thread here about favorite philosophical quotes and about who we are, but I'd personally like to know which philosophers have influenced you the most.  I guess part of the reason I ask is because, despite being a philosophy forum, I don't see much discussion of philosophers, and I'd like to know where people are coming from philosophically.

As for me, though I had some interest in philosophy in college (particularly in my libertarian phase when I was influenced by Lockean natural rights), the writer who was really responsible for renewing my interest in it and helping to shape my current views was Ken Wilber.  I don't necessary think he's all that innovative in his philosophy, but he has a gift for summarizing and integrating several other philosophical ideas and making them intelligible.  I'd say the philosopher whose views most approximate my own is Alfred North Whitehead, along with other process philosophers like Bergson and Chardin.  I've also become interested in the phenomenology of Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty, as well as the embodied philosophy it has spawned.  Lately I've started absorbing the pragmatist philosophy of William James and John Dewey.  I'm interested in the similarities between pragmatism and process philosophy.  I have a certain affinity for the ideas of German idealism, though I wouldn't personally consider myself an idealist.  Other honorable mentions go to Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, Robert Anton Wilson, and Plato.

How about you?  Who are some of the intellectual influences on your philosophy?

In no particular order:

Epictetus
Socrates
James Allen
Shakespeare
John Lennon
Krishnamurti
Albert Einstein
Fritjof Capra
Marcus Aurelius
Alan Watts
R.A. Salvatore
Bob Marley
George Orwell
H.G. Wells

And i'm sure this list is incomplete, as I tend to incorporate ideas into my personal philosophy from as many sources as I can, assuming they fit correctly.
