OP,
I don't have a specific title to recommend, but science textbooks in general can be a help.  I often find used textbooks at the thrift store for a buck or two.  Often i purchase books just to read a couple chapters in them. Microbiology, cell science, just science in general (helps to be interested in science obviously).  I also have a habit of doing this with the other subjects i study (comparitive religion and sexual history); I spend a lot of money on books I don't really need.

Actual mycology textbooks are often quite expensive, keep an eye out for used copies online anyways.  Cheaper used textbooks like i mentioned above often have a whole chapter on the fifth kingdom.

I've looked at the popular Psilocybin: mushroom growers guide, but it's nothing you wouldn't know by studying here for a little while. ~P~

What are some good to great recommended reads for the mycology enthusiast with half a brain? From beginners manuals to mycology for the advanced. How were you introduced to them? What are the books that you have read? Which ones are your favorites and why?

Didn't realize it was a trick question...

These are all the books I have on the subject and they are all great in their way. The Harris book is pretty elementary and older than old-school but it's all I had for quite a while.  The two Stamets books are each classics, all of them are well read.

Psilocybe Mushrooms and their Allies is a field/cultivation guide and although the cultivation is dated the ident part is great, as good as other field guides I have (although of course Stamets Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World rocks though it's not a mycology book persay).  Allies has seen a lot of use. :mushroom2::thumbup:

I got TMC when it was first published (can you tell?) and have read it cover to cover more than once and used lots of it.  The rest is all practice, experimentation, and trial and error, as usual.

Also, I don't have it anywhere handy, but Homestead Publishing, where I got spores way back in the day, published a few pages on how to grow them and I used that as well.  Beginner stuff definitely! :alientransform:

And as I recall found most in bookstores but ordered TMC from Fungi Perfecti direct.

Peace

I have this book, its very very detailed and complex. A serious read but really interesting and has everything you need to know about taming the truffle! Thinking about buying some trees inoculated with perigord truffles from france as I live on the right soil and have a bit of spare land :-)

Now I myself don't know alot about truffs. I did read online a few years back about some man who put all his savings into the best land with thebest trees ect...

Well he tryed to make a farm for over 30 years and didn't make a dime. The old man ended up passing away, left the land to his kids. His kids sat on the land for I think 3-5 years and then had so kind of pigs come out and search the land. Turns out the kids now own one of the biggest truff farms.

So my question is,does it take years and years to grow them or was the write up I read a joke?

3 yrs for truffles to grow, and you can use dogs instead of pigs, Beagles, or Jack russel Terrier
, and i did a lot of research, it seems they only grow french truffles in these places... perigord, france, which is where they come from. a small part of australia, that valley in southern oregon, and part of lower british columbia, i think it's vancouver island, BC. Although there is this place here in east canada called Anapolis valley, i have reason to believe they will grow there, the minimum winter average temps are -5 C in the innner Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia, there is an indoor/outdoor mushroom farm there too, it's where i'd liek to retire. nice place.

feels like a thread jack i'll post another book to keep this related. i like this one a lot.

i really want to get this book too , just saw it on paul stamets' site.

I think it depends on the age of the trees used and what type of soil they are planted on. inoculated trees need to be widely spaced as the truffles like a lot of sunlight. In that truffle book i think it said it takes about 10yrs for the truffles to start popping up, but this can vary greatly.
Maybe it took 30 yrs because of the direction the slope was facing, or it was windy, or maybe they were just very slow to establish truffles. I don't know, but theres so many possible factors influencing the time for the truffles to appear, maybe the conditions wernt quite optimum.

Sorry yeah not very helpful to the original post, I confess I have not read some of them, so I got a nice review from amazon uk for those ones, all 5 star rated - try these books:

This review from amazon uk was entitled 'Best book on magic mushrooms i have ever seen:
'This book should be the prize possesion of anybody interested in shrooms. It is well written, has lots of pictures, and the quality and layout of the book are very high. This book lists, describes and pictures pretty much every psilocybin mushroom currently know to man, and is an invaluble reference guide.
As somebody has already mentioned, the only slight down fall of the book is that some of the photographs are a little small, but considering the sheer number of photographs in the book, maybe they have to be small to fit them all in.

The book also contains tips on taking mushrooms, and information on the levels of psychoactive compounds contained within the various species.
I was amazed at the number of speices of psilocybin mushrooms that can be found in the UK, as very few "normal" mushroom field guides ever mention them.'
--review from amazon uk: "The photographs are sublime. Stamets succeeds in luring the curious into having a go. His enthusiasm breathes life into the unsung occupation of mushroom production and yet manages to deliver the necessary technical information. Without getting bogged down in the langauge of biological sciences, Stamets offers a wealth of information on the growth parameters of a panolpy of fungal delights.
I was truly inspired by the book as the breadth of species that can be grown suggests even the most exotic are within one's grasp. The depth of information lends the reader the knowledge to choose the species that they can grow from raw materials that are available locally. I live in Ireland, so straw is cheap and freely available, hence mushrooms that grow on such materials are a more sensible option to mushrooms that prefer oak-logs and sawdust. Further the reader will be able to decide on the type of mushrooms that may prove most lucrative locally. This book is a doorway into a surprisignly immense world.

Beginners might be advised to get a night course on microbiology or find a geek to show them asceptic technique. Otherwise read the small print and apply yourself."
-- review of this book from amazon uk: "This book is great, written with style humour and charm. Jam-packed with info on many different species and strains of fungi, including sections on the culinary and medicinal values of each. The book also covers subjects such as mycorestoration, mycoforestry and mycopesticides. There is also good advice and info on cultivating mushrooms yourself and how to simulate the natural environment in which the species are naturally found. The book also covers some of the basics, such as life cycles and basic biology. An absolute must for mycologists or anyone interested in how mushrooms can benefit humanity"

Mostly Paul Stamets stuff as he is the don of cultivation.

I thought by asking my questions in your thread it would bring it to life a little more. I looked at the book with truffs and thought I would post that because it went with the topic and I never did read the book. I was just trying to learn. I will stay away my friend.
