Outdoor Shotgun w/ Bugs?
    #12378912 - 04/12/10 03:09 PM (14 years, 7 days ago)

For those of you with gorgous weather...your already growing outside.

So I wanted to know, for anyone that uses an outdoor shotgun which I'll bet works amazingly for Air + humidity...do you have an issue with insects getting through the holes and buggering up your projects?

I haven't had yet, but I only drilled 3 lines of holes along the sides and none on the bottom. The lid is full of holes, but no holes from about 8" down to the bottom. So bugs would have to do some crawling to get in, or just fly in randomly. The outdoor breeze gives plenty of FAE without compromising humidity. I just mist the whole thing with the hose. The container itself keeps water from hitting it directly but allows enough water to get in to make up for evaporation loss during the day.

And that keeps good RH eh? Even with so few holes. That's really interesting...that'd be a great change up from the regular holey mass that the other design has...I'll give it a whirl when it gets warmer.

I had a hell of a time with flies last year when I had a reishi tub outside.

I just use smaller holes, mist twice a day and most of the time not drill holes in the lid. I see bugs all the time but they don't seem to congregate in the tubs. The reishi , shiitake, oysters, tigrinus and others love it. I live in the desert and it is pretty dry so I can't vouch for what kind of climate you have or bugs. Tubs outdoors work great for me under my grapefruit tree.

I use plastic paint strainer bag material anywhere i want to keep bugs out of but air exchange high. I also use the bags to keep the perlite in my shotguns mess free and convenient to clean/change.

No joke on the reishi blocks attracting bugs, i had a 10 lbs block that they would not stop bothering until i buried it.

this is the thread i needed to see! i have a bunch of oyster bags colonizing and i wasnt quite sure where i was going to fruit them because i dont want oyster spores in my home or even have room for a bunch of shotguns. but shit, this is perfect. its spring here and wild oysters are starting to fruit too so its the right temp for sure.

thanks for bringing this up mephisto  i now have a plan!

Great to see those pics...really helps me round out what I'm going to do this year. Screw excess amounts of time and money on screen and treated wood/scrap metal. I'll stick to outdoor shotguns. Tiny holes and no holes near the ground. Then holes in the lid are to preference.

Thanks everyone. Say...this could be applied nicely to certain outdoor only species that one would be trying to cultivate outside a 'bed' setting. :strokebeard:

Anyone know what temp oysters can safely get down to during the night?  A lot of nights are around 40 here, is that too cold?

Holes in the bottom are of most importance. Just have an extra container to set it on top of to get it off the ground. I use an old picnic bench. I don't put holes in the lid because the damn fruit tree their under drops so much leaf and flower material and when it rains I don't like the tops of my bags getting flooded with water.

I had to leave for some work, but 3 days later my oysters are ready for me to pick them

Holes on the bottom are essential? Maybe if indoors, but my outdoor SGFC's have been doing fine. I will probably drill some more holes around the sides tho.
