Sanchez, how long do you have to hunt before finding patches like that? Are they literally everywhere or what? You must be in the blue mountains somewhere or maybe the Southern Highlands for the weather to be good enough.

I've been hunting this area for a couple of years now, moved here in 2008 and went for a hunt in late April. Found subs within 5 minutes of stepping out of the car. When I first started hunting in 2005 I was maybe finding a small bags worth each day, by the end of the first season I was finding a few bags each day. Gradually worked my way up from there. It can take a while to find the areas that produce subs in any great quantity, and to figure out exactly what kind of environments to look for. But once you figure it out, the subs start popping up everywhere

The trails I'm hunting now are between 3 - 10 km's long each, in some sections there are patches of subs every 1-5 meters. Other parts there will be nothing for up to a km due to a change in vegetation that they don't like.

I will hunt until I either get too tired or the sun goes down. Generally hike and bike between 6 - 10km's of trails on a average hunt, great fun

It is still very early in the season yet, finding more and more subs every hunt that I have been on so far this year. Can't wait until they really start to get going in the next few weeks. Also got a nice suburban woodchip pile that usually produces thousands of them starting in a few weeks  A few piccies:

Here's a few photos of what I have found on a really good day, hoping to get a ton more this year!

Thanks for all the advice Sanchez, I've been googling and I've narrowed down several likely spots.

Now I'm thinking of ordering a truckload of wood chips for my yard too.

I stole one of your pics for my avatar too, Thanks for that mate.

I have heard that you need a maximum of 7c at night. A couple of days of rain is all that is needed, again from what i have heard.

What do you do with all the subs you find? Do you usually pick them all  or do you just take what you need?

My mind has just been blown, if you are near me that means there must be thousands of subs in the brindies just waiting to be found... and here I was thinking I should wait until early May!
My only hunt so far was near Mt. Coree, maybe i should head in a little further.
How long does it take for the bluing on the stem to become apparent? When i found my subs the stems were already sky blue on all of them, even the young ones (they were shiny and wet so I don't think it is because of age) and there were one or two that looked to me exactly like subs but they weren't already blue - when i pinched them i waited about 10 seconds and didn't see any bluing, so i tossed em. Should i have waited longer?
And finally some mates of mine said they took 10 their first time and hardly felt anything, yet i was tripping balls of 5 - does potency vary that much or am i just sensitive to them?
Sorry for the third degree its just you know everything :P

Wait a lil longer than 10seconds. Pinch the stem or make a little slice with your finger nail. Carry em around while looking for more and see if they bruise after more time.

I've picked some which bruise after 30s and some which barely change for a few mins

Look for around 16 degree average max temps, and 8 degree min temps with plenty of rain - they should start to pop up very soon if not already. You may need to wait until late April/Early May depending on your area

I don't pick anywhere near all of them, just enough to satisfy myself and friends for the next year at minimum. But when there are thousands of the buggers I don't see the harm in picking more than I may need

It can take up to a minute or three to see bluing - some will be blue already from being bumped around by debris/animals/insects. I'd wait more than 10 Seconds, but if in doubt I recommend just throwing them, not worth the risk as galerinas etc can look very much like Subs. If you are keen you can take a spore print when you get home, print should be a purplish brown.

Potency will depend on the person and your tolerance - I can take maybe 5 - 10 good sized subs for the first trip of the season and be tripping hard. But if I take the same amount within a week I will need maybe twice as many to feel the effects. I recommend waiting at least 2 - 3 weeks between trips to avoid 'eraser head' syndrome and to keep tolerance down. If you try taking the same amount the day after tripping you will notice little to no effects due to the tolerance built, which usually lasts at least three days minimum. Nowadays I will trip maybe once or twice a year, I prefer hunting them more than anything. Totally the reverse of when I first started out lol. But yeah some people will need more than others, there are many variables like weight and sensitivity.

Ask any questions, I don't believe I have all the answers but after hunting the subs for nearly five years you will learn quite a bit about them and their positive (and negative) effects.

Good luck guys, keen to see this thread fill up with many great photos of everyone finds :mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2:

Depending where you are and how much rain there has been around you, there could be. It's coming to the end of the season, but you might get lucky... I ran into someone about a week ago who said he was gonna go hunting that afternoon, so there must be places with em
