 Security Lights & Shed locking ideas?

I have a new miter saw and some other high end things I want to start keeping out in my shed.
The problem is, I live near the city line and housing projects and this area is often targeted by assholes wanting quick cash from people who worked hard their whole lives to get what they have.
Anyhow, I checked the crime statistics and talked with a friend of mine who works for the county council a while ago and got details about 'burglary' stats. This is why I refrained from keeping things in my shed: It's interesting because since records show a high frequency of firearm owners in this area, which is middle-class/working class, single family homes, I guess the criminals realize this because reports of stolen items from sheds happen more often than actual break-ins of the home.
I asked 'what if I kept a lock on the shed?' and she laughed at me and suggested that I buy a video surveillance system if I was that concerned about it.
I'm not coughing up $4,000 for a video surveillance system to keep a few hundred dollars worth of stuff safe.
And as much as I'd love to sit on my back porch with a shotgun all night to school any ill-fated intruders, I actually do have better things to do 
So I implore... Does anyone have any other practical ideas of keeping a shed safe? I was thinking motion sensor security lights... does anyone know what kind of work has to go into hooking those suckers up? or does anyone know of any kind of new age locking device for sheds that have proved to work?
Or anything that I might not know about (I'm pretty behind on new-age technology and gadgets)
Any info will be appreciated... I really don't feel like keeping a dusty miter saw in my living room much longer

I would think one of these  coupled with a couple security lights would make a sufficient deterrent.
The idea being to draw a massive amount of attention to whatever sets off the lights, and with disc/round lock it will be pretty damn hard to cut the lock off.

I would also suggest a motion sensor alarm for the inside of your shed. If some one does get the door open you'll have an alarm in the house to alert you of the intruder. Then just apply the necessary buck shot enema!

u can buy a digital recorder and video camera for under 300 that will record like 2000 hours or so.. also i use to have an alarm that u could hook to a door so when it was opened it would scream very loud and it was like 2 dollars. it would atleast scare them off. i hate a thief, but they r here to stay so watch out.

same, can't remember what the one i had was called but it had 2 metal contacts that would go in a door and when the metal wasn't making contact (door open) it would make a loud ass buzzing sound sure to scare off a thief.

well lit places help, you can get a security camera from home depot for under $100.... even a digital recorder...
also, owning a gun never hurts, nor does a sign that explicitly states this *mounted on or near said shed*

motion sensor alarm is a good idea, you bave to make sure there's at
least 2 sensors, one for the front and one for the back (inside), the
reason is, I can pop or pick a lock in well under a minute, if the shed
is constructed from wood, screws and nails are easy to get around on
the back side of the shed especially if there's good cover preventing
the neighbors from seeing, it it's a metal shed, a screw gun is all

I've set up magnetic latches before, there's no apparent way into the
building, it consists of nothing more than a couple of steel rods that
can be slid back with the use of neodymium magnets, install a lock in
addition to and even if they cut or pick the lock they'll never figure
out the door
as for cameras... for a couple of hundred bucks a wireless IR camera
can be mounted near the shed and a time lapse recorder can be used, the
recorders are fairly cheap, the cameras run about $100 but they wont
stop someone from breaking in just like a lock will only keep honest

You sound a lot like me. Any chance you have a checkered past also?
Good idea on doubling up on the motion sensors, didn't think of that.
I think a trip wire flare would be fun also, not practical, but fun!

I had to show an alarm installer where to install sensors in my house,
the guy was a real tool, almost like he wanted to come back and rob the
place later

Maybe you should look into home security as a business? Sounds like you might be good at it!
Got any link to those magnetic locks you spoke of above? I would like to try to make a couple. I've been robbed before.(by my own brother)

it's something you'd have to make yourself, it's nothing more than a
round steel rod that slides from the door into the frame or frame to
door, the fact that they float freely prevents someone from cutting
through them with a saw
basically you need to drill a hole into the door and the frame at about
a 5degree angle, that way the rod cant be jiggled out of place by
rattling the door, the neodymium magnets are strong enough to move the
rod through 3/4 inches of wood, if you use something like this on your
home, you'd need to have the bolt set so it can be pulled back manually
and locked into place.
one of the things I've taken to is using steel bar stock to reinforce
the frame on the house for the door lock, 1/4 inch is more than
sufficient to prevent it from being kicked in and only needs to have
1/4 inch of space routed from the frame and the trim (the trim to
accommodate crews or bolts)
