Does anyone know much about it and its uses?
I'm making my 3rd Octagonal picnic table and the untreated pine 2X6X8 pieces at Lowes and the Depot are looking pretty crummy, so I went with a 2X8X8 white wood for the picnic table top and regular untreated pine for the legs and supports.
I found a really good weather sealant called 'Spar Urethane' for the finish to keep the tables nice all year round.
The white wood looks great, but I'm not real familiar with it... so if anyone has any input, feel free to share.

white pine and fir are suitable for framing members in walls and such,
even with the spar varnish you'll have issues with rot in just a few
years, southern yellow pine is far denser and may give you about 3-4 more
years of use
if you build it as an octagon the miters should be cut at 22 1/2 degrees,
for 6 sides which looks more aesthetically pleasing cut the miters at 60
degrees (30 degrees from a square cut at 90)

Damn, that kinda sucks... I looked around for better wood, but I can't find anything in 2X6X8... all the cedar I could find was only 1 inch thick.
I don't have time to dry out PT pine and I can't find enough decent looking pieces of regular pine for a table top... it's all cracked and buckled with holes and shit.

you can get by with the white pine/fir, make sure you coat the piece,
especially the ends very liberally with the varnish before you assemble,
it may take several coats to seal it up well
any time I need something that's got odd dimensions like true 8/4 lumber
I check for companies that sell to cabinet makers, for me its a hell of a
drive but it's well worth it because I get what I need and I can get it
all custom milled if I need it

I have been making out door furniture for years and I always use poplar. It is very rot and bug resistant. My pop works at a saw mill so I get it for free, but you can call any local hardwood mill and give then your dimensions. They'll probably have the sizes you need dried and plained. And it's cheaper than a mega store! Props on the Spar Helmsman. That's all I will use.

poplar's rotresistance is only a little better than pines, it's also
prone to warping from high humidity and moisture and if theres' a lot of
sapwood it's going to rot fast, and the finish will have to be maintained
seasonally, any ground contact will accelerate the process... cypress is
only a little more expensive in most places, some companies sell it for
as little as $.70/bd foot

by far black locust and osage orange are the most rot resistant, both
have been used for fencing that has lasted more than 35 years and in a
lot of cases it's much cheaper than poplar

Very correct on the locust and osage (one of my faves) Locust will last practically forever!
I chose poplar because of it's beauty. Lots of mineral deposits leaving greens, blues, and purples. If it's kiln dried and treated with proper sealant, It will last along time. Depending on the climate of course. Here in Indiana I have a table that's 15 years old and no rot, still very sturdy. Just needs sanded and resealed. I might do that this weekend.
When I sell a poplar table I usually get around 250 to 300 a table! People love em'!

when I sell a table I get between $1500 and $5000... people love them too
but the price stops a lot of people from buying, mine are normally indoor
pieces anyway

I'm just getting my shop set up after 7 years, I picked up some of my
lumber a few days ago, some of it caught some weather, I found carpenter
bees in a couple pieces of walnut... small projects for that
no clue where any of my old pics are but as soon as I'm set up and
running again I'll post some
