How Do I Make It ?
    #12235709 - 03/20/10 09:44 AM (4 years, 6 months ago)

I was looking into turning a cheap Stainless Steel presto PC into a pot distill.  I seen some plans kinda like in the picture below but I am not sure how they get from the output of the PC to the pipe.  I was reading around and someone said to use a compression fitting ?  No idea what that is I google that and a brewery cork and came up with nothing.

Your input would be great.

My friend's dog made a still like this -
(Click thumbnails, then click image again for real full-size. Full-size on most of these images is 5 megapixels - they should fill your entire screen and then some)

Here's the schematics of the entire still-

Here's the cooler/condenser. It is the same as a Liebig condenser used in chemistry; except made out of pieces of copper soldered together.

Here's a closeup of the top of the condenser. The female threaded bushing is used to attach it to the top of the reflux tower - I used a few threaded bushings like that in order to make the still quick & easy to assemble and disassemble. It's nice being able to break the thing down in under 5 minutes, rinse it out, and store it in the back of a closet.

Here's the reflux tower with the condenser screwed onto it. The female threaded bushing on the bottom of the reflux tower is what attaches oh-so-ingeniously to the lid of the pressure cooker.

Parts layout for both ends of the condenser jacket -

Here's what I think is the most-ingenious part of the design -
the ultimately-easy & awesomely reliable way of attaching the reflux tower to the pressure cooker

...and here it is with the pressure cooker lid, about to get screwed together

Here's the whole shebang, up and running & spitting out giant juice -

It's being heated with a crappy hotplate here because it was only running through a very small test-batch (maybe a gallon of mash). If you take it outside and stand it up on cinderblocks so you can stick a propane burner under it, it works much better / more quickly.

using 1/4 or smaller copper tubing would increase the efficiency, you'd
have to upgrade the outer sleeve to a 2"-3" pipe, also a helpful tip on
bending the pipe without kinking it, either invest in a brake line
bender or go all old school and fill it with sand

Thanks for that I use to do HVAC so I got some copper bendering tools still around somewhere as well as my soldering shit, so that will def come in handy.

Biggest problem is trying to connect it to the PC.  Basically in that pic I showed they took out the valve that the weight sits on then some how connected the copper tubing to it.  Pretty nifty.

I made this over-sized to accommodate a big pressure cooker; or even perhaps a full-sized beer keg someday in the future. A scaled-down version would suffice for most people.

Good idea filling the tubing with sand while bending it... I made this & took the pictures nearly four years ago; I was young & not very skilled at the time

That outer sleeve is 3/4" dia pipe (I think), and with coolant flowing through it being pushed by a fountain pump; it's more than enough to handle the load of a 16qt PC filled with mash or once-run shine; being heated with a propane burner at full blast. If you're using a straight-through condenser pipe and not a coil, the length of the cooling jacket is far more important than the diameter.

I was reading about like a threaded compresion fitting or some shit like that I will see if I can find pictures.

Something like in the below link.  It should just screw into the PC then you can put the 3/8 inch copper tubing right into it.

most should be standard NPT fittings available at home depot, compression
on one end and threaded on the other, pick up some teflon tape, paste or
anti-seize compound (auto parts store) to prevent galling/galvanic
corrosion

I just noticed something I forgot in my previous post, another reason
for the tube bender, upsize the outer sleeve on the condenser to 3" and
coil the tubing to fit inside, that's where the efficiency really plays
a role, it should look something like a graham condenser

of course if you wanna get all fancy, you can build a reflux still and
make use of the condenser in a slightly modified form

http://homedistiller.org/Stillmaker.pdf

many parts can be obtained from home depot to build one

They will all work D,  you have seen my set up and they all do the same thing.  The diameter you will want if you are running it from your PC should be 1/4-3/8",  but the only thing needed for a still is to cool the vapors and know what the temps are.  So any set up you choice will work.
Good luck,
CH

Thanks I am just not trying to go as big as your setup because I live in a tiny apartment right now that is why I can't have a 3-4 foot pipe coming off the top of the pressure cooker lol

So i could basically make something like below sorry for crude drawing lol.  But where should I put the port for a thermometer that way I can check the temps so I dont get any methanol.  Which you warned me about CH ?

I also like the on in the picture below but how would one make the slanted plates and solder them into place then bend them over ??

I have not made anything yet.  But it should roughly cost 100 bucks or so depending on if I got with a pot or pressure cooker.  I have not made up my mind yet.
