Can anyone of you fine hunters tell me if you've ever found Copelandia cyanescens in the warmer months?
I'm interested to know if these would grow in Western Sydney or the blue mountains.
And do they specifically grow from cow dung or can they be found in the bush?
Trying to do some research on them because I BELIEVE they were what I consumed the second time I had mushrooms. My my friend had them and I don't have contact with him anymore to find out. HOWEVER, that was during winter so I doubt it was Copelandia cyanescens. (I'm very sure they weren't subs though. I remember them being white to grey more than caramel or brown. Also they were fresh btw.)
In any case, they sound like a whole bunch of hilarious fun, and I'd love to know if they can be found in the Sydney area!

Found some more on friday, only a few mature enough to pick though. Patches are drying out again. Still lots of pins in one spot, but not many pins to be seen in other areas. I hope that rain actually comes.

Oh and Bigspoon, Cope cyans (Pan Cyans - same thing) grow on dung (cow/horse) during warmer months. Probably not likely to find them in the bush unless its an area where cows/horses roam. Also very unlikely to find them around sydney area. Sounds like they could have been homegrown.

Here are a few shots of my haul on Friday. Those photos probably aren't the best representation of what I found, most of them didn't look that scummy!

Yeah they look nice when theyre young like that dont they?
XrayCat, hmmm thats an idea. Ive tried it before at one spot though and it didnt really work. Id have to be constantly going down there and the area where the patches are, are quite large, so id have to bring huge amounts of water.
Another small haul today, again only a few mature enough to pick. There are a lot of pins there now though so ill go back in a few days. Subs seem to take forever to mature though so i probably wont go back for another 5-6 days or so to give them a proper chance to grow up. I think ive been a little too eager so far
The bluing on some of these is crazy.

dunno about specialised training, but any cautious cop would probably take details, take a sample and get an expert opinion.

Always be polite and answer their questions, but be very careful not to incriminate yourself. You are an amateur hobby mycologist investigating the local fungal diversity. Anything with a gold coloured cap you may have in your basket is a suspected galerina and you intend to take a spore print for a positive ID That's only if you get caught red handed. You say you carry field guides, It would be easy to flick through to a pic of a galerina to show them. Never say or do anything that can be used against you. It's best not to say anything, but in Australia this will more often than not work against you. If they want to get serious and look like laying charges still be polite but say " I'd rather not say anything else at the moment" Can I see a lawyer or solicitor ? But if your original declaration states clearly that you were intending to collect legal specimens they will have hard time proving otherwise.
If you have nothing active still be polite but don't give them anything they could use against you.

Goldy all good tips, cops in AUS are pricks when it comes to stuff like this, and they will try to wear you down and play the whole power trip, you just have to stand your ground, because in all truth a cop wouldnt know a cyb from a gal and you could probly whip out a woolies shroom and they would arrest your ass, best to hunt in areas of thick scrub and for christ sake dont walk out from the bush onto a main road, or any road, with a paperbag in your hand looking excited lol, take a backpack, makes you much less suspicious.

My guess would be that most cops have no idea what an 'illegal' mushroom looks like, and unless you made them supsicious I don't think they would assume that you were collecting the naughty ones.
Convincing them that you are an amateur mycologist shouldn't be hard if you have notes, numerous species, etc and I doubt that they would know that its illegal to collect mushrooms without a permit (you could play dumb if they do).
I guess the point is not to make them suspicious and they won't look into it any further.

Its illegal to collect non-actives without a permit? WTF? How does one go about getting one of these permits?
I always get so paranoid hunting. So what i do is when i find a couple i put them in a bag somewhere hidden and whenever i find some i just quickly put them into the bag so i have minimal time with anything actually on me. I hunt in a fairly public area and cops have driven past on a couple of occasions. I usually have my camera out and make it look like im just taking photos of wildlife. Luckily theyve never stopped to ask questions.
