Drunk, high dad leaves baby in oven overnight, police say
March 16, 2010 - CNN
 A Kentucky man high on marijuana and drunk on whiskey put his 5-week-old son in the oven Sunday and left him there overnight, police said.
The oven door was slightly ajar, and the oven was not turned on.
After smoking marijuana at the restaurant where he works as a cook, Larry Long, 33, returned home to share a fifth of whiskey with the baby's mother, Brandy Hatton, McCracken County Sheriff Jon Hayden said in a statement.
Hatton had four or five shots and went to bed while Long finished the bottle, Hayden said.
At 5:30 the next morning, Hatton awoke to the sound of the baby's cries coming from the oven. He had been in it for several hours, police said.
Emergency crews responding to the scene transported the infant to a local hospital, where he was found to be unharmed.
The incident was reported to authorities by a psychiatric facility that Long turned to when he learned what he had done, officials said.
"He actually called a mental health crisis line immediately thereafter and told them that he had done this. And they contacted us," Hayden said.
Police arrested Long and charged him with first degree wanton endangerment. He is being held on bail of $10,000.
Authorities have removed the baby from its mother's care and awarded emergency custody to members of her family.
Long blamed his actions on the marijuana, which he believes was laced with a hallucinatory agent, officials said.

An oven actually seems like a good place for an infant to sleep. It's dark, quiet, and rather cozy.
It is messed up, though, that dad forget he put the baby there.

Agreed. Yea, I occasionally did dumb shit when I was high, but I really doubt I would put my kid in the oven if I had one. If I was high and drunk it would have been more likely, but I still doubt I would have done that.

Putting your child in the oven wow- he must not have wanted to take care of his child anymore- thank- goodness he called it in too who knows what else he would have done next time. Something tells me it was the alcohol not the MJ unless it was wet with pcp-  unlikely I tend to get more cautious when i smoke cannabis not more inclined to put my child in the oven- seriously must have been alcohol poisoning,

A friend got drunk put his girlfriend dog in the oven turns it on(its an old slow one)and forgot about it from waiting and the time his girlfriend was screaming it was baked  . Hate when propaganda strikes people minds  come on!! marijuana laced with a hallucinatory agent , he must of payed more then

A couple of my buddies bought mj laced with pcp when they were in 8th grade, but they got it from a older burn out kid that thought it would be funny so it not unheard of. Just uncommon.
Im really glad the child is okay. When I read the title I thought it had been baked.

A fifth? This guy looks like a pro but I've lost all connection with what is and is not a good idea after drinking not even that much.
High I'd have just been like "Nope, not putting that baby in the oven, there are some totally inorganic fumes in there that my kid does not need to be breathing, and I don't want him developing claustrophobia later in life."

Yes, this is what disturbs me the most. The man needed some help and counseling, not fucking incarceration. I hope he causes all sorts of problems for that "mental health crisis line."
They had no reason to contact the police or child protective services, or anyone else for that matter.

I think this guy got a tough rap really. Everybody does stupid things when drunk/high that they can't explain rationally when sober.
It is my firm belief that however fucked you are, you don't fundamentally change your character. Whilst there is an outside chance of severe mental illness causing him to actually want to cause the baby harm, I think he was just being a dad and putting his baby somewhere dark and out of the way of MJ smoke or something and his crunk mind got it twisted.

Typical scare story probably, twisted to be far worse than it actually is and of course, blaming the illegal drug for the actions of this man. It's a common theme in newspapers - usually it's an automobile accident, where the driver had been drinking (oh, and he was stoned too) and the pot gets the emphasis over alcohol in causing the accident.
