I've read this stuff before, back in the 80's. Authors like Constance Cumby, Dave Hunt, Johanna Michaelson, and so forth. They started a nice cottage industry for themselves playing off of fundamentalist's fears of growing technology. I've got nothing against Christian writers, C. S. Lewis and Francis Schaeffer for instance, I may not agree with them note for note but they were examined men, unafraid to apply intellect to their theology. These others are moonbats calling shots from the Pat Robertson playbook. Hal Lindsey, the Left Behind series, all making boatloads of money off of people's fear, just disgusting.

I think Icelander is right. I think underlying this whole thing ultimately is the fear of Death. The Anti-Christ, the New Age Movement, Obama, Technology, The Illuminati, you name it, all have come to bring us the "Bad Death". I think this is why the idea of the Rapture is so popular amongst Evangelicals, it's the great Get Out of Jail Free card.

I had read those authors I mentioned back when their books were new off the press. I remember how the devil was everywhere poised to take over the world, how the Anti-Christ was just around the corner. 25 years later and he's still just around the corner. The truth is we all will face calamity in some form or fashion at some point just as our parents did and their parents before them, the Event Horizon happened the moment we were born.

I think you know I'm right and I think its scares the shit outta you

The idea of heat death stems from the second law of thermodynamics, which states that entropy tends to increase in an isolated system. If the universe lasts for a sufficient time, it will asymptotically approach a state where all energy is evenly distributed. In other words, in nature there is a tendency to the dissipation (energy loss) of mechanical energy (motion); hence, by extrapolation, there exists the view that the mechanical movement of the universe will run down in time due to the second law.
