Re: Anyone know anything about Gypsy (Roma) magick? [Re: RiverRat427]

I think it's a good movie, kind of crazy and all over the place but it captures the Romano spirit really well and is a real look into Gypsy life in America. I should also mention, in case it isn't obvious to some, that the cast is is NOT made up of actors but actual members of the 1980's Manhattan, NYC Gypsy community.

Also, posting the that link reminded me to mention St. Anne. It's the feast of Saint-Anne-de-Beaupre (July 26) in Quebec, Canada and it's the biggest Romano gathering in North America. I've been making sojourns up there since I was a little tyke, my mom's 100% French Canadian. It's famous for the miracles that are believed to have taken place after praying there for Saint Anne's intercession.

The Gypsies revere Saint Anne (who was the grandmother of Jesus Christ & mother of the Virgin Mary) as the ultimate wise, caring, older female figure who I mentioned above holds a high place in Romano society. They believe prayers to her will never fail and some Roma groups consider her their patron saint.

I'm sure the Pentecostal Christian movement within the Gypsy community has effected her veneration somewhat but the Roma still form a large presence at the feast and procession. They have their own traditional celebrations apart from/in addition to the mainstream Roman Catholic feast.

Good movie. I didn't know that the Roma played themselves until I googled the movie description about 3 parts through and noticed that the actor playing Angelo was Angelo.

Yeah, most people would probably assume that they're actors playing zany Gypsies but I don't think many gadjay actors could pull it off so good. Especially the Romano dialogue. There are some Gypsy songs you can listen to Roma playing/singing that if you thereafter hear a gadjay musician you'll be able to tell instantly, most are seriously lacking in the Gypsy fire.

From what I've seen in the movie "drag me to hell" gypsies have some pretty bad ass curses bro.

Just dont cast any spells on me and we'll still be cool.

Youtube's great for that stuff. Check out Singing Sam/Sammy Stevens (for the American-Gypsy type music you heard in the movie), Fanfare Ciocarlia for Gypsy brass, Esma Redzepova, Goran Bregovic, Taraf de Haidouks. All great. Plus there's a whole load of amateur Roma musicians (most are American Gypsy Kids) making videos right in front of their computers for family family and friends.

There's a documentary called "Gypsy Caravan" which covers a concert tour of Gypsy musicians from all over the world who get together to to tour the US; and a movie called Latcho Drom (Safe Road) that kind of tells the story of the Romano migration by showing different musical pieces from Gypsy musicians from India through the Middle East, Turkey, Romania, Hungary, Germany, France, all the way west up to the coast of Spain.

The great thing about Gypsy music is you don't have to speak their language to get their music, you don't listen to it, you feel it. The Roma more than anyone else (IMO) are able to truly make violins sing with joy or guitars weep with sorrow. Crazy when you have some liquor in you.
