[CAN] B.C. pharmacies move cough medicine behind counters to curb teen overdose

B.C. pharmacies move cough medicine behind counters to curb teen overdose
March 10, 2010 - The Province

VICTORIA — Some B.C. pharmacies are moving cough remedies containing Dextromethorphan — known as DM or DXM — behind the counter at the request of the College of Pharmacists of B.C. following a rash of intentional overdoses by teens.

In the last two weeks alone, four teenagers in the Victoria area have landed in treatment after overdosing.

DXM, a cough suppressant and pain reliever, is easily accessible at drugstores. Youth use it to get high by exceeding the recommended dose.

According to the College of Pharmacists, the prime recreational users of DXM are 14 to 15 — although there are reports that children as young as 10 also use the drug.

Signs will be placed on pharmacy shelves where cough remedies are kept directing purchasers to the dispensary for a consultation, college spokesman Marshall Moleschi said Wednesday.

If the spike in DXM use catches on in other areas beyond Victoria, more pharmacies could move to stow such drugs behind the counter.

"We're going to continue to monitor the situation," said Moleschi, adding that the consumers' need must be balanced with protecting youth from harming themselves.

Some youth see cough medicine as a harmless way to get high, said 14-year-old Sarah Hackett, who has started a Facebook page called "DXM is not cool!" that boasts 287 members after two weeks.

"One of my friends went to the hospital because she overdosed on it," said Hackett. "I just really freaked out and didn't know what to do."

Although the friend is now OK after landing in detox, Hackett said many of her peers don't know the dangers of abusing DMX.

"At first they say it's just cough medicine," she said. "I went home and researched it. I found out what it does is (it) messes up your brain and can give you brain damage. Your brain will stop telling your lungs to breathe."

Overdoses can cause breathing difficulties, nausea, dizziness and rapid heartbeat, among other symptoms, as well as the potential for death, said Cheryl Chaytors, manager of Victoria's specialized youth detox.

The four youths who recently survived overdoses were referred to detox by social workers and Victoria hospitals," said Chaytors, adding that the detox process lasts seven to 10 days. "They will have some lasting effects from using the DXM — dizziness . . . no fine motor controls, confusion, memory loss, depression and anxiety.

"The problem is, youth see it as safe because it's something they get from the drugstore."

And, more notably, it's easier to get than alcohol.

"It's easy to go to the drugstore and buy that kind of stuff, or it's quite easy to shoplift," Chaytors said.

EXACTLY.

"following a rash of intentional overdoses by teens."

So now jumping in front of cars becomes impossible, right?

Not that I am much in favor of DXM abuse, but this is obviously convoluted. They don't care about you. This is just some more "drugs are bad, you need our control and protection" type of pr.

Restricting cough medicine is no different than having the police show up at your house at 10pm each night to deliver you your 1 Ambien just in case you wanted to take 90 to get back at your ex-wife psychiatrist who put your kid on Zoloft which probably is what caused his suicide at age 6 in the first place.

People need knowledge and a world that gives you a reason to live. They scarcely have either.

My local pharmacy has a large brightly decorated Robitussin point of sale stand right next to the counter.  It has the full range and they're always at heavily discounted prices.  Every time I go in to purchase something it's right in my face and I know one of these days I'm going to crack and purchase a few.  Grrr!

By the way it's the start of Autumn here and the Robo-stand has been there all Summer. Go figure.

The person in the quote is confused - these are signs of being stuck in detox because they were found tripping.

I would like to know the circumstances behind the overdoses - were these kids found tripping and someone freaked out, or were they really dying.

I agree - hype, drugs are bad.

Im sure if i can do it on and of for two years and then do it around 3 to 5 times a week for one year, and be still kind of impaired, as far as memory but im getting better with it, but im sure if thats possible than someone could go on a few good binges wothout too many negative consequences. I didnt notice any bad consequences untill around 4 weeks after i kinda quit.

What does DXM and the associated cough medicine part you drink with it actually do that is bad?  I've only tried 100ml once and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.  Great come down, clarity of mind but with the essence of a mushroom trip and with immense energy!  I felt brilliant the next day and it was over in 4 hours or so.

Is it a drug which causes damage solely with continued abuse or is drinking it every now and then not so bad?
