Mexican Police Arrest 4 Men Carrying Nearly $3 Million in Cash

MEXICO CITY – Police arrested two Mexicans and two Colombians, who were carrying nearly $3 million in cash and are suspected of belonging to Colombia’s Norte del Valle drug cartel, in an operation in Mexico City, Federal Police drug enforcement division chief Ramon Pequeño Garcia said.
The suspects were identified as being involved in drug trafficking in the course of an intelligence operation, Pequeño said.
The suspects were identified as Milciades Baez Lopez, 38, and Ernesto Ramirez Trujillo, 62, both Colombian nationals, and Mexicans Jose Luis Laddaga, 33, and Ricardo Casasola, 47.
Laddaga, a Mexico City native with a degree in business administration, was the group’s leader, Pequeño said.
Investigators determined that Laddaga was responsible for handling bank deposits via transfers from companies based in China, Hong Kong, Spain and the United States.
Baez Lopez is suspected of being in charge of delivering money and instructions for laundering the cash, while Ramirez Trujillo, who was born in the northwestern Colombian city of Medellin but holds Mexican citizenship, is suspected of taking the physical delivery of cash, Pequeño said.
The suspects were arrested as they drove through Mexico City in an automobile that had $2.8 million in cash in the trunk.
“The Norte del Valle cartel is one of the main suppliers of drugs to various cartels in Mexico City and in the Mexican republic,” Pequeño said, adding that the cash generated by cocaine sales was sent to Colombia “one way or another.”
Many Colombians “are in charge of receiving money in Mexico City that is later transferred to Colombia in different ways,” the Federal Police official said.
The Norte del Valle cartel, considered one of the world’s largest drug trafficking organizations, has been accused of smuggling some 500 tons of cocaine into the United States between 1990 and 2004 via Mexico.
