    #12175817 - 03/10/10 05:05 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

i have to write a research paper comparing and contrasting two writers. i like edgar allan poes work, but need to find another writer with a similar style so i can compare/contrast them.

Poe is a rather unique writer....however, i would imagine one could do a good compare/contrast between Poe's "Narrative of Gordon Pym" with Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness".

Poe's "Murder on the Rue Morge" is one of the first detective stories, and really set some of the rules of that genre, so that story with one by Raymond Chandler would work too.

I agree. H.P.Lovecraft is a good choice. However the scope of such a comparative essay is relatively immense imo.

i was thinking about lovecraft, but his works seem to be on a whole nother level of darkness.

im supposed to compare/contrast their overall styles i believe, not just a story or two. so would you happen to have any key points to focus on when researching?

If you want to go for contrast, compare him with Walt Whitman.

Polar opposites.

from a narrative point of view, how do both writers create suspense? what is the source of dread/horror in both (these would be contrasts)

both work with a dark sublime...a sublime of horror instead of awe (ie lovecraft and poe present the awe-full vision)

I don't know if anybody has said this, but H. P. Lovecraft has similarities.

Poe is the master or lit though. I've had his whole collection of poems and short stories sitting next to my bed for like a year now.

ok so im doing my paper on poe and lovecraft. now if you guys could be so helpful, what lovecraft stories do you feel represent his overall style for the most part.

more topics to compare/contrast would also be appreciated.

so far i have

Compare
both writers were relatively unknown durin their time but are now considered to be great american writers.
both write about dark, science fiction, or horror stories.

Contrast
how both writers create suspense
whats the source of horror
Poe was the first author to try and make a living off of his writing, while lovecraft wrote as a hobby

topics still to research.
did either author show any signs of a mental illness or being metally unstable.

please help with more.

My favorite most Lovecraftian Lovecraft story is "Pickmans Model"!

Yeah Poe is the master of suspense and horror, not science fiction.
