Using Rye flour?
    #1207378 - 01/10/03 02:43 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

I was not able to get brown rice flower, so I got rye flower. and when I used the PF recipe it came out really sticky compared to brown rice formula. Any ideas on why it so sticky and gooey? Dosent seem right.

You use less water when you are using Rye flour.

According to Anno's fungifun recipes, the water doesn't appear to need measuring (correct me someone if i'm wrong).

The idea is to saturate the verm, then measure this wet verm and mix in an appropriate volume of dry brown rice flour (approx 2ish:1 by volume) before spooning into jars.

I have a load of home-ground brf, rye flour and millet flour at home, that i'd like to use up before i concentrate on grains proper - can anyone tell me if this method works as well with these different flours? presumably if we need less water for rye flour, we just have to add proportionately more rye flour to the wet verm. anyone?

i have worked with rye flour (i made my own from rye grains) and used it in the pf-tek recipe instead of brown rice flour. It worked fine.

Rye flour is fine - if not better than brf IMO.... more nutrients than rice I think

...I've never used the same amount of h20 as in the TEK anyway...just do a bit of experimenting with the water ratio and you'll find the right one eventually  just a very small amount should pool in the  bowl when the verm is saturated before you add the flour...

Yes it works.
As far the rye needs less water....depends...

Depends on how fine the flour is and how the moisture of rye is.

If you follow my method, it should work nevertheless, regardless what flour you use.

Dark Rye flour even better.....more nutrients.. faster colonizing.. when I use flour/verm jars.. I use Dark Rye exclusively. And yes...... a tad less water... couple cc`s

alright folks...i know that millet flour is supposed to work with the pf tek, but how would you guys rate it compared to brf or rye flour? better, worse? its what i'm most likely going to be able to get....i can try grinding my own brown rice if millet flour wouldnt work as well, though...

as to which is better ? opinions vary .i like millet .
that said, you can use any cerel grain, even oatmeal works .
again, imho use hole grain and grind it yourself .that way you have the hulls in there and the flour is fresh .
i also think that the hulls are the best part . organic wheat bran and oat bran are very good, i'd like to try millet bran if i could find it .

I liked ground millet when I used it a while back...seemed to produce a good non-sticky substrate, though I didn't notice better yields or potency. If anything it seemed less nutritous than BRF and rye according to the info on the packet.

Just made some rye flour jars due to running out of rice to grind up...horrible stuff in my opinion. It seems to stick the vermiculite together into big gunky lumps rather than giving a nice mix that falls apart easily. Home ground rye would probably work better, but the grain doesn't seem to be that widely available around here.
