Tropical Visions - Panaeolus collections from Indonesia. Possible new species/variant - opinions? * 3
    #12099484 - 02/25/10 11:21 PM (2 years, 3 months ago)

Recently we were lucky enough to spend 6 weeks on a small tropical island, somewhere off the coast of Bali, Indonesia.

The island is very small, with no cars or motorbikes - the only transport on the island is by horse cart and the island is covered in COWS - the horses and cows combining to provide a lot of food for a lot of fungus - and being the start of the monsoon season we were there at the right time for some prime hunting!

'Beach cows' with a view of the largest volcano on Bali in the background -

Of course, being a hot tourist destination, once again the mushrooms are heavily advertised - every restaurant and bar trying to cash in where they can -

The pans are sold here in banana leaf 'cones' that come over from the mainland where it's much wetter -

But, after some of first rain of the season, the island transformed from a dustbowl to a tropical paradise in a matter of days... and late afternoon, on sunset, I stumbled upon my first pan finds just before it was too dark to see anymore .

Now at first I didn't think they were active but after picking them they demonstrated obvious bluing when bruised -

So I excitedly got up early the next morning to look for more -

And found a reasonable handful -

My first thought is that these were P. subbalteatus (cinctulus) - but as I am aware, they don't display obvious bluing? These specimens blued readily, but it is the first time I have found this species so it is unfamiliar to me.

Here's some pics of them growing -

These were promptly bio-assayed and proved to be quite uplifting! Does anyone have any ideas?

So during the trip, I decided to go for a walk when I noticed a 'promising' looking coconut grove -

I had a quick look, and it was covered in these small specimens -

At first I thought these were Pan. cyanescens, but due to 'breakfast', things weren't looking completely normal anymore.... :tripping: -

After accidently dropping some (into my mouth) here is what the collection looked like -

And some close ups for identification purposes -

Here is a harvest of the same mushrooms but from a different location -

And side by side with a 'classic' copelandia for comparison -

Any suggestions??

These were the first finds, but then things started to get really interesting....

:mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2:

The monsoon started to settle in and the island got wetter and greener and mushrooms started to pop up everywhere - and I mean everywhere!

I managed to get some shots in all the excitement, but hunting became a daily ritual, starting each morning by picking the Pan. cyanescens from the front doorstep of our bungalow, and there were too many to photograph.

So the following pictures are in no particular order, and are just of various daily hunts.

Here they are growing outside our bungalow -

This is the incredible lady who basically managed the bungalows, with her own collection. She has been picking them for a long time -

I found this specimen seemingly growing from a piece of wood - although it must have had some dung attached to it -

A perfect pair -

An incredible cluster -

A chunky specimen -

Sexy cluster -

Mushroom pussy -

Usual morning walk -

Perfect! -

A great hunt - mangoes AND mushrooms (YUM!) -

Huge mushroom, huge haul -

Another day, another carpet of fungus -

Agressive -

Big cluster -

And finally, a nice day for sitting by the beach! -

Phew! You still with us? Now for the REALLY interesting part.....

:mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2:

Some of you may remember this post from a while back - Burmese red capped Pans.

These interesting variants were popping their heads up again!

So, following is a collection of photos of this interesting variant!

Whether it be a new species or simply an environmental growth factor is just a guess at this stage, but it definitely demonstrated some unique qualities that was unlike a classic Panaeolus cyanescens. Interestingly, this time, I found them growing EXCLUSIVELY on the HORSE shit.

This was the first reddish one I found -

And this is it compared to some regular looking 'Pan cyan', and two of the 'Pan subb' looking specimens -

On this big plate of Pan cyans, you can distinctly notice the red capped ones - they really stick out -

And some close ups of those particular specimens -

Here is a pic showing the variations of all Panaeolus species we were finding. On this plate is also the possible 'Pan subbs' at the back on the right hand side -

Another cluster of red capped Pans growing in different location (one of my favourite photos) -

Now these ones were like Pan cyans on steroids - they had the 'red cap' qualities to them - stronger stems and more golden caps - but in my eyes they were still more of a 'classic' Pan cyan. But these were also growing directly from horse shit, as opposed to cow or just long grass where cows graze -

Some of the red capped ones growing from a single horse shit, amongst a pile of coral -

And these very interesting, almost 'cube' looking specimens from the same small patch, in the coral -

Here's a couple that appear to be growing DIRECTLY FROM the coral!! (there's obviously a small bit of shit hidden in there) -

Fianlly, here are some close ups of that collection for identification -

Very interesting at least, and I believe these red capped ones are stronger than the classic Pan cyans, maybe just due to their overall size and vigour - but the bluing reactions on them are incredible!

Thankyou for making it this far and I would love to hear some opinions from the TI's on this!   :mushroom2:

I've got no identifications or anything to add, just gonna say that I am going there one day. Seriously. I am jealous. At your doorstep!

That's just crazy.

The funny thing is though:

Hunting mushrooms on mushrooms is the best.

That being said, damn you for making all of us so goddamn jealous.  Even for those of us who find that many mushrooms, finding them in indo makes it that much better. Once I get the money I am going for sure.

Either those are some obscure or new Panaeolus/Copelandia species or the isolation of the island has brought out some rare traits in a known species.

With the amount of variation in your collections, you may have more than one species.

Seems like you had an awesome vacation! Thanks for sharing the pics.

Wow, amazing!!!  Thanks for making my day by showing these amazing places that you have found and traveled.

There are some serious variations to those active pans:mushroom2:

I have seen orange-capped active pans before but not quite as red as those unique ones.  Also the ones that look like cubes are very unique.

I wonder how much beer costs there?...because I would've had to wash that 'breakfast' down with some.

Did you find any cubes on the island?

Excellent pictures, awesome report.

Happy travels:cheers:

The best thing about this is that Indonesia seems to give a fuck about international drug criminalization when it comes to mushrooms. I remember my uncle going there back in the 80's and they've been selling fresh magic mushrooms and all sorts of food stuff like "magic mushroom omelette" back then, too.

Thanks to _OttO_ I currently have these growing.  The growth on agar was especially dense compared to most pan cyans I've grown and more linear than the typical cottony growth of pan cyans (although this could well just be some strain variation).  In liquid culture they are doing great too.  It'll be exciting to see how they turn out!

Tell me about it - mushrooms obviously don't raise enough alarm to prompt the police profiteering from them. And that reminds me, here is a picture from the airport that I meant to put in the main post -

Brilliant....!

It is interesting that I also found the red capped species in Burma, a few thousand kilometers away.

And there are definitely 2 distinct species, possibly 3.

The first being the ones resembling Pan subbs but I don't think they are? The second classic Pan cyans, and the third the red capped - but these may just be a cyan variant.

Still waiting on some TI's!

My pleasure! No we didn't find any cubes, except 'possibly' for these specimens -

But I think they were the red capped Panaeolus variants, just mutated. I have prints of these though so we can find out for sure.

Unfortunately, I think its simply that their drug policies aren't advanced enough to bother including the rarer entheogens. Its not exactly from choice, and so far - mushrooms don't really cause a huge issue. Remember - the Indonesian system is VASTLY different from Western countries... corruption is rife.

That being said, its uplifting to be walking through the local village with a hat full of magic mushrooms and have every local, including the older ones, smile at you and congratulate you on your finds - and not feel an ounce of guilt, or as if you are doing anything wrong!! The locals are (mostly) completely cool and open minded with it all.

Just to make sure there's no confusion, the red capped prints you have in culture were from the 'Burmese' collection - but I'm certain they are the same variant/species as in these photos anyway. I eagerly await your results Mr. Helix - good luck..!

The staff at the bungalow bring their cows to graze there while they work. For fun, we tried to help mother nature along by squashing pans into watermelon and feeding them to the cows (not that mother nature needed much help around here!) - the cows got to know us by the end and were very friendly, they were often waiting at our bungalow for breakfast!

Our vacation wasn't just a holiday - this trip lasted for 15 months, not 6 weeks! When your away for a longer time, it is for reasons much more than just a vacation.

Regarding the bungalows, in this particular case, I have to keep the location a bit of a secret. But I am happy to recommend any other cool places in many other cool countries that we came across - there are lots of wonderful places in this world to explore! Just shoot me a PM when you are serious about setting off...

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

So have any TI's got any opinions? Are the first ones P. subbalteatus? And do the red capped ones appear to be P. cyanescens?

Hey Inski - Nice to see you around!

Thanks for chiming in, perhaps they are cambodginiensis - they just look so different macroscopically and I thought cambodginiensis was only distinct by its spore size?

Gilli islands is that where you are?. One of the best places in the world I must get there during the wet season I've only been there in the dry. Love it there. Monsoon here in Darwin at the moment pans everywhere but we don't seem to get any cubes here seems like its the same there. Beautiful pictures.

Good to see you also, especially with your exotic discoveries:cool:

I think the macroscopic features of your finds are a good match for Panaeolus cambodginiensis especially the pigment of the pileus and the form of the stipe with the upper portions being striate as can be seen in your great images, there is a chance it could be P. bispora although only microscopy will separate the two species with the latter having only two spored basidia as the species name suggests!

It would be great to see some of the microscopic features to narrow down the possibilities.

I would expect to find P. cambodginiensis in your location in Indonesia.

Great finds, either way:thumbup:

Excellent thread and looks like a very good holiday Otto.
This wide a range of Panaeolus/Copelandia species exists not only in Indonesia but also in Australia going by my own experience.
Personally I feel that there are very likely several new species involved here and not simply variants of a species.
Unfortunately I also believe the taxonomy of the Panaeolus/Copelandia genus is a huge mess that will take some years and first class laboratory facilities and work to sort out and clear up.
Until then we'll keep our chins up and make progress step by step.
Good work.

OP. you mentioned pan subbs you found not turning blue? I stumbled on a patch of what appeared to be Pan Subs. 99% of what I saw said pan sub (caps, stems, habitat, spores, ect.) They were growing in a "fairy ring" in tall grass where cows were grazing. I picked only a few as to not trample a beautiful patch. After several hours I saw no bruising so I concluded they were Pan Foe. Then I read that Pan Foe's may also contain trace amounts of active compounds? My find looked EXACTLY like what you were calling pan sub? Can anyone clarify or offer an insight? If it helps I live in Nor Cal.

I have picked panaeolus subbalteatus that have blued half way up the stem and on the caps. They range widely in potency.

Nope - mushrooms are legal in Indonesia! At least the authorities don't care about them - that's the best bit. All the restaurants sell them openly, check out the signs I posted in the pics at the beginning of the thread...

Yeah thats correct Blimey - they crack down hard on the green there, but you can still find it in certain areas. The law there is very different to the West - corruption is the name of the game, and the bigger the penalty - then the higher the price you have to pay. I feel thats the main reason they are so strict on the superb herb, it's good money for Mr. plod!

Yeah that place really is backwards, but hey - it is Indonesia, they've had a pretty turbulent history to say the least...

But seriously, _OttO_, I have read this thread like 20 times now, it just puts a smile on my face seeing such a magical place. Thank you for sharing!

I received some spore prints and took a quick look.

Normal Pan cyan from Indonesia:

Red capped Pan species:

I'll be taking a closer look at the spores and comparing sizes later on. I haven't got a chance to look at the Pan subb specimens yet.

Yeah, I noticed it too. I held back saying anything because I'm not very familiar with the variation in Copelandia cyanescens spore shape.

The normal pan cyan spores are more round, while the red capped spores are more elliptic in shape.

Nice micrographs BlimeyGrimey, did you view any of the pleurocystidia, I still think it's Panaeolus cambodginiensis, the shape of those spores is closer to that species than it is to P. cyanescens.

I only received spore samples of the Copelandia species. I did receive some gill fragments of the possible Pan subbs, but I haven't looked at them yet.

Which micrograph resembles Panaeolus cambodginiensis, both or just the red capped micrograph?

Here are some pictures from today.  The color has seemingly gone back to a classic pan cyan look now.  I did find it odd, though, that the fruiting bodies are so small (possibly the smallest I've seen) and grow in tight clusters, but this might be because of the makeshift grow chamber that I am using that isn't as good as the regular one.

Nice grow, BH.

Maybe the redness was a reaction to UV sunlight, similar to melanin production in humans, or some nutritional variable.

BlimeyGrimey and protestsong thanks.  Yeah, I agree.  It might be related to the humidity levels or UV light or whatever.  Or maybe _OttO_ found some sort of variant, although apparently they were found in several locations, not just one.

I think these are the smallest pan cyans I have ever seen, but my feeling that is more due to the lack of stability in the makeshift fruiter.  And I think the poor pinset on the first flush is from the way the chamber is not evenly heated and discouraged heavy casing colonization.  Still I am betting the trays do a lot better the second flush (for me they usually do).

I'm going to give the fruits a whirl soon.  I bet they are potent as hell.
