Now believe me I am the king of experimentation, but also I started just like 95% of the ppl here with pf tek.  The reason is cause this method consistently shows results.  You start messing with shit your gonna have failure.  You have epic failure in the beginning and you may just lose out on the best hobby in the world.  Take some advice and in the beginning follow a tek to the T.  I kinda hate teks and hate following them, but if you want results and want to learn how to grow mushrooms take it from ppl you have successfully grown and follow a tek pls.  And if you dont all that is gonna happen is your gonna post in cultivation and ask whats wrong.  "whats wrong?"  You didn't follow a tek and now your trying to recoup your losses.  These teks are there not cause its the only way but the right way

for real people need to follow the teks exactly as they are written
theres a reason they are written that way
people took the time to figure out how much of what is needed to get optimal results
then when people deviate from the tek they wonder why it didnt work

Well spoken Trus...I cut corners and it ended up prolonging my first grow for like 2 1/2 almost 3 months when I probably could have got it done in a month.  So my advice for the noobies is to follow the tek's also, and make sure you have all your supplies first before you start.  DON"T RUSH......you'll learn patience, at least I did after trying to cut corners and ending up with failed results....But once I got going it was hard to keep up!!!!:mjdance:

Looks like a great guide to get started. I'm almost ready to start my first grow, anybody have any suggestions on the best tek for a first timer?

Make sure you do the pf tek first learn that then go from there

start with the PF tek
just to get a good understanding of how the whole process works
then you can move up from there
watch these videos PF tek parts 1-4

NEED HELP - Been months! [Re: noobieshroomie]
    #12064627 - 02/20/10 09:56 AM (2 years, 3 months ago)

The picture shown was inoculated on 12/10/2009.  Still is not pinning.  I had in a 80F chamber and now in a clear Rubbermaid container at about 70F to try to pin.  Only one jar is fruiting and still can't figure this out.  Jar has lid on it with 4 holes that i used for inoculation and foil top.  I recently poked holes in the foil thinking maybe its the gas exchange.  any help would be great.

Having read until my eyes bleed, and still feeling overwhelmed, is there a link to a full pictorial write up from start to finish? I've looked at lots of different guides and teks, but being a very visual learner, I'm not getting the whole picture.
Before I start asking questions, I want them to be as clear and precise to my needs as possible.

I have downloaded a couple of pdf's I've found on here and other shroom forums, but they have all been wordy, without enough pictures to help me out.

Thanks

Hey Quirrel,

I'm a newbie just like you  I've been reading everything I can like crazy for the past couple months, finally looking to start my grow as soon as I get my spores. Obviously, I by no means am experienced, but this video lays out everything very clearly. Also check out this guide, it is very well illustrated. I don't know if you've had the chance to look at the "Grow Mushrooms" section of Shroomery, but it has many guides and a wealth of information.

Good luck and happy growing!

Cheers for that.

More to read and view. Might visit the opticians soon.

I have to have a really clear picture before I try my hand at anything at all. Just now I'm at 75% clarity on the steps and the theory behind it, but there are things that niggle at me, which I need clarifying.

e.g. (a bit further on in the process) Having just read another tek about making lc, I see that some people make them with no gas exchange, others make them with. One design had a tube with polyfil in the top. What I couldn't work out from it was there something below the polyfil to stop contaminants getting in, or is the polyfill plug/filter enough to keep it clean.

Thanks again for those links.

Off to make a cup of tea and do myself some more reading.

edit

Why had i not seen that simple tek guide before? Possibly the best one yet.

Hopefully this pic turns out better.  Can someone take a look and tell me if i should start to birth these or not??  My previous post a few replies up.  Original inoculation date was 12/10/2009.

Early Primordia? [Re: Nibin]
    #12080547 - 02/22/10 08:54 PM (2 years, 3 months ago)

Hi guys.  Im a newb with lots of ambition.  This is my version of a mono tub horse poo/straw sub inoculated with WBS.  I know what Ive done wrong but im still excited about the growth I do have.  What can I do to save this batch?  I have two more of these and another FC for cakes.  I have about 25 jars being incubated that I am very doubtful of for various reasons I wont go into.  I have 2 cakes sitting in that FC for the first time but Im not sure they will fruit because I could smell that sour apple smell and theres a good chance I am contaminating my whole area with bacteria.  Im not sure if Im paranoid or in denial.  I dont want to talk about it.  I want to talk about this mono tub.  I didn't cover this substrate with foil, what else could I have done wrong to cause this early Primordia?  It is sitting at about 73 degrees and 70% humidity.  Also, an incredible amount of condensation collects.  Too much FAE?  Too little?  What to do next?

It looks too wet too me but I can't enlarge the pic.  It doesn't look bad and I don't see primordia just nice aerial myc,  give it another week and put it into fruiting conditions if the center is complete.
If you are giving them Fae stop and wait until it is 100% and what to do next is just give it more time.
Isolate any that have a sour smell it is probably bacteria an wont spread but could be other things you dont want so keep them separate.

can you enlarge this one?
The bright white spots are the flash reflecting off the tiny water droplets of condensation.  My substrate was at correct field capacity.  Do I not want too much condensation?  Thats more of a contam risk correct?  I used a different kind of filter for my mono tub instead of polyfill and I wonder if this has something to do with it.  Precisely how much FAE or GE do I want during colonization?
