I don't think it's h. zoster/shingles, really. Not if OP has the same thing that I have also had. Herpes zoster will usually occur on the torso, not typically on the hands, the rash will involve much more reddening of the skin and be accompanied by "fever and general malaise" (from wikipedia). More importantly: "The painful vesicles eventually become cloudy or darkened as they fill with blood, crust over within seven to ten days, and usually the crusts fall off and the skin heals: but sometimes, after severe blistering, scarring and discolored skin remain." I haven't experienced this, and by the looks of the pics in the OP, it's definitely not what's going on here. I'm fairly sure this is not the shingles.

I can't say if the gloves have anything to do with it. I can't say if this is a regular sweat rash; it doesn't look like it to me, and the occurrence on the hands seems atypical. Nevertheless, whatever it is, the gloves may have very well promoted the spread of the phenomenon. I still think the odds are that this is bacterial rather than viral or allergy-induced.

I'm inclined to agree with lIXII regarding treatment: this doesn't look extremely worrying, although I imagine that it is annoying. A healthy diet and avoidance of stress as much as possible should be beneficial. Also make sure those hands are aired well (keep them out of any gloves for a while) and try to prevent infection of the wounds. Personally, I have never bothered with sterile needles and just squeezed the living daylights out of those blisters. It hasn't done me any harm, but that doesn't mean your friend shouldn't be careful. His case is much worse than I've ever experienced.

Whatever your friend does, I think the odds are that this will go away after a few weeks, and probably come back once in a while. I wouldn't worry about it too much, really. When in doubt, go see a doctor.

I dont want to say that its shingles either... but by looking at the 3 pictures they have of hands...it looks just like that... the one picture of the closeup of a cluster says:

"A close-up picture of herpes zoster skin lesions. Four small blisters are shown with redness around them. These vesicles will break, crust over, scab, and finally heal."

Which is what happens. They blister, break, then heal again. But it doesnt stop coming.

Also..

"The small blisters on this person's hand represent involvement of the dermatome innervated by the 7th cervical nerve."

The picture with that caption also represents what is going on, for the most part. I cant find anything else that looks anything like what is on my friends hand, and right now this looks like it.

What the fuck do you do if you have shingles?

man if its shingles its really not a big issue. it will go away. koraks might be right as well and it might not even be this.

its a temporary problem nonetheless, stop beating yourself up over it. its harmless and will disappear in time.

One more thing.  Have you been swimming or otherwise exposed to chlorine lately?  My younger brother used to get that if too much chlorine was used in a pool.  It was only present on his hands also.

Interesting. Perhaps there is a relationship with chlorine. I can't remember if that was so in my case, but I haven't had this issue for quite a while, and I also haven't used much chlorine anymore for a while either  Again, I'm far from sure, but this is something I can't deny either.

Can't say for sure what it is, but it looks like some sort of allergic reaction.  Possibly eczema.  At any rate, I'll give u a tip about skin allergies.  Tell ur friend to get some organic apple cider vinegar, with the mother, put it in a spray bottle and spray it all over his hands several times throughout the day.  The brand I have used is called Bragg's.  Shit works miracles.  It never fails that every time I start getting an outbreak on my hands (which looks a lot like ur friend's hands) and I spray my hands down with apple cider vinegar, by the next day, the outbreak starts reversing.  His hands will stink like shit when doused with the ACV, but it's worth it to get rid of the outbreak.  Just spray 'em down good and allow them to air dry.

Not in a swimming pool but he uses latex gloves at work to keep his hands from getting black and dirty all day running a wetgrinder. The water for the grinder has all kinds of different chemicals in them, but thats why you wear the gloves and keep your hands out of it. It cant be from that, as they all get it all over themselves all day long and nobody else has the problem, and its not all up his arms from where he gets dirty all day every day. But... im sure theres prob chlorine in the water along with other things.

Like I said, my brother got this from swimming, but only on his hands.  Even though his entire body was submersed in the pool.

Also allergies vary by person.  What bothers one person may have absolutely no effect on everyone else.  Even despite the fact that we are brothers, we share genes, and swam in the same pool, it never bothered me.

Another thing is if he is around all different types of chemicals he could be absorbing them and as he sweats in the gloves things could be coming out.  It doesn't even have to necessarily be touching his hands directly.  Though I could also see some even small amount of the chemicals getting around the gloves and it maybe being enough to irritate him.

The fact that it's been on his hand for quite some time (how long?) leads me to believe that it is eczema. Eczema can flare, like it is doing, and looks pretty much like in those pictures.

Are there any OTC topical steroids? If you test them out on a small patch and it subsides, it is most definitely eczema.

Pompholyx (hand eczema) [Re: bradley]
    #12031633 - 02/14/10 11:32 PM (2 years, 3 months ago)

Hello - I think I can help you here. This looks very much like pompholyx (a form of hand eczema). I run a website for people who suffer with this and where they share their experiences of loiving with pompholyx and more improtantly their ways of dealing with the sysmptoms. Take a look - I'm sure what you read there will resonate and hopefully there will be some advice that will help you deal with the issue.

pompholyx.co.uk - hand eczema

Good luck - and do please feel free to share your experiences with the other users - it really helps other people who just don't know what they are dealing with.
