Peruvian indentity and planting help please...
    #11985626 - 02/07/10 11:09 PM (2 years, 3 months ago)

Just recieved what I was told was T. Peruvianus. It has seven ridges on it and spines in groups of 6 to 8 running down it. Looks like one to me, I think, so I figured I'd plant it. There's a foot of snow on the ground, so I don't think outside would be appropriate. Was wondering how to grow this thing on it's side, I wanna turn it into a bush of branches, and I hear this happens alot when they root on their side after falling off of a more vertically growing sample. How could I accomplish this indoors? Would I need a really large pot? How can I keep the lighting on it right? I do have a two foot flourescent tube I could get a daylight range bulb in, would that be enough? I've heard CFLs won't do it, but would a larger two foot bulb work?

Without a picture it's pretty hard to tell what it is for ya.

In order to do a log rooting you will need a long planter or a large pot.

Wait until every part of the plant is calloused then lay it in dry soil.

Although these can produce more pups, they tend to be skinnier than straight up and down pups.

CFLs, fluoros and most indoor lighting is not sufficient to obtain maximum growth from Trichocereus spp. but it's certainly better than leaving them in the dark.

If you can, get them into full sun during the spring, summer, and fall.

I like tiny cactii so I'm guessing I'll be loggin it up. Now what do you mean till it's all calloused? like turning yellow and stuff? It'd almost be a shame to do that as it's so nice, it was the best of three cuttings. Looked healthiest too.

I can put it behind a south-facing window if it'll help. What temps are okay for it to be outside all day and night? How do I promote callousing, just leave it in the window for a week or something before laying it on some dirt? Or do I need to bury it? I know, noob questions, we're all there once.

Calloused is when the cut area gets a thick, dry, and usually white layer of skin over it.

Call it a scar if you will.

Healthy callousing can be achieved with a bright light and good airflow.

It should be kept at 72F+ for good healthy growth I'd say.

Dont bury it until it is calloused or else it may allow in infection.

Ok. You say to bury it, so Im assuming all the way, or at least half way down. Should I slice it in half lengthwise and let that callous up? Or just the end?

Also curious on your preferred blend of soils? I've heard bad things about premixed cactus soils(bad drainage and stuff). I've got plenty of perlite and verm around, just need the rest of it all.

Nah man dont cut it through the middle lenghways. You just want the ends nice and calloused then plant with about 50% under soil if planting horizontily.

I'd just chuck some of that perlite and vermiculite through the potting mix and you'd be good I reckon.

You said bury it.

I was just telling you what to do before taking any course that required a hint of burying it.

You will probably only want to put it an inch under the soil.
