Whats wrong with my friends hand?Skin disease? Eczema? Latex allergy? Pictures...
    #11986647 - 02/08/10 08:03 AM (2 years, 6 days ago)

My friend has this on his hand for quite some time now, but up until just recently it hasnt been spreading or bothering him. Now its simply out of control. He has been using antibiotic ointment, lamisil, and hydrocortisone cream...nothing has helped. The blistering on his hand is getting worse by the day and they are getting so big he says that his hand feels very stiff. When they pop they have a clear/cloudy puss inside that runs out like water. Does anyone have any idea what this is, and how to make it go away? He does not have insurance and thought it would be a good idea to take some pictures and post them up here online to get some input from others. We tried to put this up on yahoo answers but it keeps fucking up and it wont let us post so i thought id start going through some forums in hope that someone will know what this is, or possibly send him off to a different forum to post there, where others will be more knowledgeable on the subject. He uses latex gloves at work all the time, along with silicon gloves, but there is only a couple tiny bumps on his other hand so i dont think it is related.

Sorry for the imageshack links, im posting this on multiple forums and dont want to upload it to every site i go to. Thanks ahead of time!

Does it itch alot??? Kinda looks like a poison ivy or something along the line of that....

but it would spread quickly.

Try webmd!!!

Its definently not poison ivy or poison oak... it started in one small spot on the bottom of his finger months ago, up until it started blistering it wasnt spreading. Now its all over his hand as you can see.Even with it being all over his hand he said it didnt burn or itch or bother him at all, other than the fact its ugly... but now that the blisters are getting worse and are getting big, they are beginning to pop and he says they burn really bad. He told me that he was trying not to pop any of them at all, but some got so big and stiff that he had to just to relieve all the pressure.

webmd? im headin there now then...

Umm. Warts? Maybe pictures arent doing justice here. Theres MILLIONS of these things, and they dont get any different then how they are. Little pockets of liquid is all it is, that swell up like a pimple until they pop. This is the information i found on warts and... no... he doesnt have a million warts on his hand.

Quote:

There are five kinds of warts. They look different and form on different parts of the body.
*  Common warts    grow most often on the hands, but they may be anywhere on the body. They are rough, shaped like a dome, and gray-brown in color.
    * Plantar warts grow on the soles of the feet. They look like hard, thick patches of skin with dark specks. Plantar warts may cause pain when you walk, and you may feel like you are stepping on a pebble.
    * Flat warts usually grow on the face, arms, or legs. They are small (usually smaller than the eraser on the end of a pencil), have flat tops, and can be pink, light brown, or light yellow.
    * Filiform warts usually grow around the mouth, nose, or beard area. They are the same color as your skin and have growths that look like threads sticking out of them.
    * Periungual warts grow under and around the toenails and fingernails. They look like rough bumps with an uneven surface and border. They can affect nail growth.

I know it has been said, but the first thing I thought when I opened that picture was poison ivy.  If that isn't possible my next guess is some type of allergic reaction.  New type of soap, changing weather, some other type of irritant.

I've never had warts but I did not know they were capable of being so dense and spreading like that.

I am going to go ahead and blame it on the latex gloves with the powder in them that are being used every day at work, if not the silicon gloves. I recommended using cotton gloves... after the whole day of not using anything on it...it is very dry and cracking but the blistering has gone down.Although im still uncertain on how to keep if from spreading because it isnt stopping

I have this too occasionally. Not nearly as bad as shown here, but I recognize it as the same thing. I'm not entirely sure what it is exactly, but these are my observations:
- It is NOT poison ivy. That doesn't grow here, so I never come into contact with it.
- They're NOT warts. I have no warts whatsoever, and whatever these things are, they do not show the typical tissue growth of warts.

These things appear to be small cysts in the inner layers of the skin. They tend to start out tiny, but sometimes may grow to a diameter of about 1mm in my case. Judging by the photos here, they can become even bigger. If one pops up, odds are that more will follow and a part of the hand will get 'colonized' in the course of a few weeks.

When squeezed, these cysts will excrete a completely clear, gelatinous fluid. Squeezing them relieves the itching and usually turns the cyst into a small wound, which then heals. Again, this is all in my case. Again, in my case, it usually starts on the palm of my hand, just below the thumb. Btw, the itching isn't very bad usually, until you start squeezing those motherfuckers. By then, you'll have to squeeze until you get it out, 'cause it'll remain annoying

I've found that in my case there's a correlation with stress: during periods of prolonged stress, this phenomenon may pop up. I've discussed it with my father once and he said he also used to have this problem once in a while, even to the point that it would get under his fingernails, which would then sometimes fall off (no joke.) He believes it's a bacterial infection; I personally think it could be fungal as well. I've never seen this phenomenon on my father's hands, so obviously, in both his and my cases, it will go away after a while (8 weeks or so in my case) without treatment. And it may (will) come back again, of course.

I've personally never received treatment for this, but judging by the observations above, I'd suggest trying an antibacterial/antifungal creme. However, judging by the severity as shown in the OP, I'd discuss this situation with a doctor as well.

On a final note: I've never had this spread to any other body parts but my hands. I haven't been able to link this to any sort of allergy, and judging by the low speed of growth, I think it's extremely unlikely that this is allergy-related. It could be triggered by allergies, I can imagine, but in my case, I've never seen any indication of this.

Seen it before. It's a kind of contact dermatitis. Most likely from the gloves. Hands sweat a lot in latex gloves, and then opens the pours more to the allergens in latex. Happened to me when I was a dish washer years back.

looks like sweat rash to me, ie sweat getting trapped under the skin, due to blocked pores accompanied by infection of the trapped sweat, possibly caused by the glove powder.
an antibiotic is probably the best bet, though you say he's tried a-b cream. maybe a systemic a-b, ie pills?

i had this when I was younger. It happened after i slept with a girl who I should have used protection with.

I would say that it is a form of STI or STD, most possibly HPV. It will reduce and go away. Is your friend sexually active, especially recently?

This...right here...is exactly what im talking about. Whatever it is, you have it too.... youve explained it perfectly. So... if we blame it on the gloves...that would mean its work related correct? So if we turn it in at work, they should pay for the doctor...if they agree its work related that is...

Good idea or bad idea?

I dont wanna hear that haha. It didnt appear after changing sex partners or anything...and i think it would be other places other than on one single hand if that were the case too.

That is not a rash that I would consider 'clinically scary', at the stage of expression in the photos, although close.

"looks like sweat rash to me, ie sweat getting trapped under the skin, due to blocked pores accompanied by infection of the trapped sweat, possibly caused by the glove powder."

A lot of antibiotic ointments, creams, will aid in the blocking of the pores.

I have noticed that this phenomena of the palms is often linked to other skin irritations including dry, itchy scalp, acne, or seemingly auto-immune skin pathologies, additionally often swollen lymph nodes are present (signifying a systemic infection). And is often linked to an environmental condition; allergen (gloves), stress, poor diet, constipation etc.

I have found the best remedies to be:

vascular flush; hold hands under warm water for 3 minutes, then cool water for 1 minute (repeat ~3 times). Doing this in the shower is great for systemic lymph flush.

Eat a lot of fresh greens, celery (even better, put celery in the blender and just drink the fluid fraction of the mixture), cilantro

Chickweed and cleavers are the best herbs, and very easy to find, although not in harsh wintertimes... They are really only effective preparations where they were fresh (undried) for the extraction.

Similarly birch leaf tea, and milk thistle seed preparations (to help the liver in processing the cleansing).

Neem oil is fantastic to apply topically- takes away the irritation, antibiotic, does not clog pores.

Dipping hand in watered down, warm oatmeal is also good for it.

Oh yeah,

Most importantly,

Don't scratch, touch, or otherwise irritate the rash (true of most skin conditions, excema sometimes being an exception), if you 'must' rupture one of the blisters, use a flame sterilized, sharp sewing needle, go as shallow as possible, apply warm moist washcloth to it to absorb / draw out fluids.

And don't let any such suggestions (as mine) interfere with anything that you consider to be an 'emergency'

mine appeared on a single hand. first i got like a weird red rash (shingles or something) and then it turned into this thing, soon after, the skin on that one hand always looked drier than the other hand.

im sure it was from sex with a dirty girl. it went away though. and i assume yours will too. it looks exactly like what i had.
