angry cows
    #11983853 - 02/07/10 05:47 PM (2 years, 3 months ago)

I was at my grandparents house tonight and decided to go check out a field. I saw that there was about ten dairy cows grazing and they noticed me but kept grazing after a minute, but i guess i got to close or something because i was about maybe 50 yards away and i noticed about three of them coming towards me pretty fast. So i started running towards the fence, one was about 20 feet away when all the others started coming my way. Not to big of a deal but pretty exciting. Any more experienced hunters have any tips or advice to avoid this. Maybe choose a field with no cows lol

If they were just dairy cows they probably thought you were there to feed them. Dairy cows are relatively tame when compared to a bull and aren't ones to charge. The others were just following the herd like cattle do.

Next time a cow approaches, yell at it, something like " Get ya Bastard!!!" and wave your arms in the air, stomping a foot or two can be of help too. Sometimes just walking toward the beast and yelling is sufficient. Be the boss and don't let a cow scare you.

If it is a bull, get out of the pen asap.

What ^ said.

If they are full on charging, get to a fence, high grass or trees. They can't get past fences and trees (depending how dense they are) and usually don't go into long grass.

Most of the time they will stay out of your way. I've seen the same cows charge at me one day, then a month later just let me walk right by them. Even the bulls didn't give a shit.

Might be the time of year they have calves around?

Cows are usually just so bored that you are the most interesting thing they see that day.  But don't take chances with stock you do not know.  I have cows and one or two of them come over and do a head down bucking dance of challenge occasionally, pretty funny to watch when you know them but would be terrifying to others.  I've had the herd follow me about hunting cubes!

Generally if there is plenty of grass about they ignore you, if food is short you will be their chance of something to eat.  Another point not obvious but effects dairy cows more, they are used to being hand feed (from trucks etc.) so humans mean food.

In Mexico I was photographing cubes and cactu started laughing so I turned around the whole herd was in a huge half circle behind me.

They have always been chill but we do keep a watchful eye out when we are in pastures.

They can run fast, but they can not turn fast.  If you can't outrun them, stop and jump to the side at the last second.

Yea in this one field the cows always go apeshit on me. They start mooing loudly and then all gather up and stampede towards me. Always makes me have to leave the field prematurely.

haha Yeah i figured it wasn't to big of a deal they didn't seem mad. My sister was with me and was yelling "im going to fall" "I lost my phone" as we were running away lol. I almost didn't see the fence i was laughing so hard. Then she rolled in poo trying to get under the fence. Ive seen them do that half circle thing also alan, pretty intimidating.

Unless you make a noise like a blade of grass... then they might eat you.

I always just remain quiet, go about my mushroom hunting and if they become annoying, I simply walk away where they can't follow me. I've had cows 'charge' on me from time to time, but usually, the slow down before they reach me, then start sniffing around to test what I'm made of. They're curious little fellas, and even though they're a couple of hundred lbs. of meat running around, I've never seen dairy cattle get aggressive. Cows can be extremely clumsy though, so be ware not to get caught between two or one and a solid object (wall), as you might get squashed. Other than that, no worries.

It will scare the shit out of them and confuse them when they run into it. Once there is barbed wire wrapped around their legs/body, they will focus on getting out of that while you leg it away
