How long has it been?
They need air exchange and they should get enough as long as your lid is not on too tight, ive heard people say even then it still get enough air exchange...But I always have my lid turned upside down with the white facing up and I do not tighten the lids all the way.
They need air exchange but its hard to keep fresh air from creeping in.
The lids don;t have to be loose. the 4 holes in the lid should be enough as long as they are unobstructed. heck I have my lids rubberside down and tight they are all fine
They need GE= GAS EXCHANGE not Air exchange
Turn those temps down to 75. 85 is quite hot
As an added note, I use 3 inoc points of my jars and the myc just showed itself. i have micropore tape on the holes, would removing it increase myc growth rate?
didnt mean to hijack, just figured related info.

85 to 80 is fine
just wait...
all bad info 85 is way too hot!!! and you want gas exchange not air exchange
like i said learn the meaning of these two before you use them

Actually if people read these www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11972138#11972138 http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11972114#11972114 http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11970554/fpart/all/vc/1He
They will know everything not to do based on your info ranging from mid 80's for colonization and thinking Gas exchange is the same as Air exchange to telling people not to fan there FC's and the use of 6500K fluorescent lamps or any lights are not needed You go against everything that has been refined in the last few years and what the most trusted cultivators say. i really think the root of the issue is that you have yet to even grow a single mushroom

It seemingly takes longer than any other LC that Deaner's done. Is it because lack of gas exchange?

yup
it helps if you dont fill it up as much so it leaves more air at the top and it wont stall or slow its growth b4 its done.

speaking of LC's when i barely swril mine, it breaks up into a bunch of teeny pieces. i use 175ml of dist. water, and 1/2 tbls. of honey, jar wrapped in tinfiol, kept in the dark at 79F. it grows great, but it does that, is it normal, or am i doin somethin wrong?

"Fresh air exchange" and "gas exchange" are stupid terms which only seem to confuse new growers. Somehow the expressions have turned to idioms here; "gas exchange" has come to mean "not hermetically sealed containers". "Fresh air exchange" has come to mean "gas exchange at a higher rate than 'the other gas exchange'". It should it most cases really read "lowering of CO2 levels".
I've seen "GE" (re-)defined as Gas Expulsion, which only makes a little more sense than Gas Exchange.
To answer the OP:s direct question: mycelium needs oxygen to grow.

Gas Exchange means an enrichment of oxygen in a more or less sealed environment, in order to prevent the air to contain too much C02. Mushrooms like rather high C02 levels, but the mycelium does indeed need oxygen to grow.
Fresh Air Exchange means a replacement of the whole amount of air in an micro environment, in order to prevent as much oxygen as possible.
The problem might be (about the confusion), that many people don't really know what it's all about. They use these terms without actually knowing their function. In the end, the terms are actually legit, in my opinion. They pretty much describe what it's about.
With GE you exchange C02 with Oxygen, with FAE you exchange "old" air with fresh air. Of course air consist of gas as well, but the term "air" should indicate what it's about.
But maybe you're right... When you don't know what it is, it doesn't make too much sense

Ok so how should I let my mycelium colonize? Airtight or not? Silicone vent whole or not? What am I supposed to do about the co2 and or oxygen? Yes only oxygen or yes only co2 or only both? Or just say fuck it an give them fresh air? Idk what to do...keep in mind I'm a noob but I have read a lot about substrates, incubation, and sterile tech. Also a little help on what light if any I should use. And as always huge thanks I advance!
