Salvia May Become Illegal In Kentucky
February 4, 2010 - WBKO
A hallucinogenic herb could make the list of illegal drugs in Kentucky.
The House judiciary committee passed legislation that would make it
illegal to possess, buy, sell or cultivate salvia divinorum in Kentucky.
Democratic state representative Will Coursey of Benton sponsored the
legislation, saying he believes the herb known as "Diviner's Sage"
poses a safety risk.
The measure now goes to the house floor for consideration.
A similar measure made it through the house in last year's legislative
session, but didn't get out of the Senate.
Well they should ban sugar as a dangerous drug. I mean it causes heart attacks through obesity and should be banned. Taken in large quantities causes hallucinations in children. Not to mention it beiing a environmental hazard. Nothing more hazardous then burnt sugar.
-------------------- Alice I wonder if I've been changed in the night? Let me think. Was I the same when I got up this morning? I almost think I can remember feeling a little different. But if I'm not the same, the next question is 'Who in the world am I?' Ah, that's the great puzzle!

There's people always dying trying to keep them alive
There are bodies decomposing in containers tonight
In an abandoned building where
A squatter's made a mural of a Mexican girl
With fifteen cans of spray paint in a chemical swirl
She's standing in the ashes at the end of the world
Four winds blowing through her hair
well of course lets just keep doing the same old thing! eventually every drug user will be imprisoned and there will finally be the sought after drug free america
tell us what to do. i already checked the people supporting the bill the last time they tried to put it through and none of them were from my county so i figured me bitching at them wouldn't do much good.

Stock up now.
God I love living in Texas. The state legislature meets every other year and they have so many other things on their hands that they could care less about salvia. Especially after some failed to make it illegal the first time. Nobody wants to touch it now.

That or we know that a few young people arguing against this wont do a damn thing, and that were powerless compared to our government =P

To my brothers and sisters without work in Kentucky:
Start to cultivate salvia. Make connections with people. Because it's made illegal the government is looking out for you by opening up an underground market so you can profit from its sale.

The key words in the article are "The measure now goes to the house floor for consideration."
The best thing you can do now is to call and write all the members of the house and speak against the bill. Since the bill affects everyone in Kentucky I don't see anything wrong with contacting the house members from other districts. But if you don't feel like making 100 phone calls and writing 100 letters, just contact the ones from your own district. If you do have the time, composing a good letter and sending it to all members would be worthwhile.
Let them know that sending people to jail for a plant that has never harmed anyone is not a good use of resources. Jail is proven to be harmful and expensive; Salvia divinorum is neither of those things. The short and long term effects of the criminal justice system are much more harmful than the short and long term effects of the drug.
Also mention that there is no evidence that salvia is causing problems in Kentucky, despite its availability.
Marijuana prohibition made the drug much more popular, and warn that salvia prohibition would likely have the same effect. When Salvia is legal, few people use it and far fewer use it more than once.
Can someone find the full text of the bill and post it here? That will help us refine the arguments against it.

That is what they want you to think, but the truth is that Kentucky house members don't get many phone calls or letters, so every one will be considered, especially if you raise some good points that make them reconsider salvia prohibition and by extension the drug war in general.
At least half of the salvia bills that have been proposed have not made it into law. There are many reasons for that, and anything you can say against the bill will increase the chances that they will not act on it for one reason or another, or vote against it.
When California was considering banning salvia, I called the house member who introduced the bill and told his secretary that it was not a good idea. She gave an unexpected response, and asked for my phone number, telling me that she would have someone who knows more about it call me back. A few minutes later I got a call from the legislative assistant who wrote the actual bill! We had a friendly discussion about it that lasted nearly two hours, and I went over all the points I mentioned above. He had some counter points and I was able to mitigate many of his concerns. He was worried that this could be the next ecstasy, and I told him that when ecstasy was banned in the 80's almost no one had ever heard of it, and now, due to prohibition, its a household word. He was also concerned that we just didn't know what the long term effects of salvia are. However I countered that we should not send people to prison just because we don't know - Criminal punishment should be reserved for cases where there is actual harm.
In the end we agreed to disagree, however the bill never made it out of committee and was never reintroduced, perhaps partially due to our conversation.
One more thought, state house members are usually willing to meet face to face for 15 minute meeting to discuss an issue. If you dress well and explain these points in person and discuss their concerns, that will have much more impact than a letter or a phone call.
The government loves doing this same shit over and over and over..in case anybody hasn't noticed, they are not banning these substances because they are dangerous. If they were, they would ban tobacco and sugar, along with datura and other poisonous plants long before they tried banning marijuana and salvia.
Yet last time I checked it is still legal to grow outright poisons in your garden, while on the other hand if you try to grow anything that you can use to alter your state of mind..well that's a felony.
The problem with banning salvia is that nobody cares - and they SHOULD care. Why you ask? Because salvia is a compound with no known associated health risks OR addiction potential. It doesn't post a significant risk to society either, past people making youtube videos of themselves tripping out on the drug anyways. The problem with this is if we let them ban salvia, we are sending a message that we'll let them ban anything they want without the public's opinion

Quote: If representative Coursey believes there to be a safety risk, a warning label would seem to be in order. Otherwise he will help create a black market for this product, which, as we know, will cause far more serious problems.
I'm all for warning labels. There's warning labels that cigarettes cause cancer, that antidepressants increase suicide risk, that plastic bags shouldn't be worn on head, that hot coffee is hot, etc. We can't just ban everything that has some risk. I acknowledge that everything may have a risk. Every law that bans a product or activity just makes criminals out of law abiding citizens and creates a new income stream for existing criminals.
How about we slap this to a bag of sally and be done with it.
There are so many better things to worry about than salvia. It's not really even harmful unless you're not responsible, and within the ten minutes you're tripping do something unwise. On my trips with salvia, I'm usually tripping so hard I can't move. They'll ban anything that changes the way we think. He'll vouche for it's "risks," but not it's benefits, as some people do indeed have spiritual experiences on salvia. One-sided bullshit. I could grow salvia and be considered a felon (depending where I am), but I could also grow milkweed, foxglove, brugmansia, and other poisonous plants, and I'd be in the gold. When is the government going to get it in their head. A lifestyle choice is a lifestyle choice. They have no right to meddle in the affairs of what people do in their free time. If someone is harming someone, then by all means, take them to the justice system, not the drug. People can be responsible or they can play dumb and fuck around with shit they don't understand. But until that determination is made, drugs are not the problem. Unresponsible people are, but we sure as hell don't see a ban on them anywhere.
I sent an e-mail to my districts house representative, who knows if hell actually read it or not *shrug* lol.
I was recently informed that there are efforts to make salvia illegal to posses in Kentucky. I feel this is a horrible decision to make. Salvia is a relatively harmless substance, with little to no effect on public safety or health.
By making the drug illegal you will make it more popular than what it currently is. And the people who want to try it will get it through illegal means. This law, on its own, will do more harm to society than what the actual substance does. I find this incredibly silly.
Ill leave you with a quote from Abraham Lincoln.
"Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded."
It goes against the very principles of our democracy to try and regulate what we can and cannot ingest into our own bodies. I understand that sometimes our government must regulate substances for public health and safety reasons, but that should not be a tool that our government wields lightly.
