Harvesting: twist, pull.... and patch?

There is a very fat mushroom on a cake that began as a in-vitro pin and is now ready to harvest... The base of this one is huge, maybe 1.5 inches. Now, I know and understand the phrase "twist and pull," meaning grasp from the base and twist and gently pull away... no cutting involved.
But what happens when any stump is left over? Pick it off with your fingers/knife?
And also, the bald spot/divot the harvested spot will have afterwards... is it necessary to patch with moistened, sterilized vermiculite?
Thanks again guys

If there's a stump, you need to remove it or it could lead to contamination.
As for patching, as long as it's a cake, and the hole is not HUGE, no need to patch. If there is uncolonized substrate exposed to the air, however, just cut a piece of cling-wrap, wipe it with some denatured alcohol, let it dry for a sec, and place it on the hole.

Thanks for the replies, everyone.
Shea, I'm curious about this answer. Your past posts have answered many of my questions, and I can definitely contribute some of my success so far to both you and RR... so thank you.
Now, about the contamination from leftover stumps. I've already picked one in-vitro pin from an earlier cake that came out at a meaty 20 grams wet. This was my first harvested mushroom, and it did leave a tiny bit of a stump. I simply patched it with sterilized and moistened vermiculite. A week later, it doesn't appear to be "rotted" as many posts on these boards have said may happen. The small visible portion of this stump actually has mycelium growing off of it now.
So, with my experience contradicting many user's opinions on these boards... can you detail the process you take to harvest your cakes? You've had no contaminated 'left over stumps?' And do you patch afterwards?
Thanks again, everyone

lol. there is no special way to harvest. just pull the fuckers off then toss the cake back into the fc or dunk it. you're making a bigger deal out of this than needs to be. shea is correct that the leftover parts after harvesting wont lead to contamination. the same is true if you leave aborts. its a myth.

Just be sure to remove as much as you can WRT Pans. Some of the aborts from the first flush will grow mould by the 3rd, some times second. Just a warning geeza.
