Depends I can't knot the bag because the bag is to small to go all the way around the mono tub.

Yeah I have done 4 quarts 4.5 and 5 quarts of water. Just did alittle of each and I found that 5 is way to much 4.5 is a tiny bit to much and 4 is just right. Also it depends on what kind of coir you are using as well.

Verm is not obligated, but it adds fluff and volume. Also it holds alittle extra water in the substrate.
If you are going to use just the coir then I would cut back to about 3.5 quarts of water.

That is a 18 gallon mono tub. The holes are at 4 inches and the substrate came to about 3.5 inches in depth. I also do the same thing with 10 gallon tubs, and you can get the full 4 inches with alittle substrate left over.

No problem glad you found it useful. I will update pictures of the tek once I get my tubs fully colonized they are like about 50% right now at 4 days after spawning so it should not take to much longer.
Also I don't really like that smell but I do like the smell of coir, has that dirt smell to it and reminds me of when I use to work with a landscaping company.

Yea the coir smelled good too, especially once it got hot water poured on it and steamed.
Reminded me of a sandalwood smell. Or a very mild down to earth incense even.
I did one stupid thing tho. I work in a kitchen and frequently use my hands to take things fresh from the fryers when we are busy and tongs become a pain in the ass. Sooo I figured what the hell it wont burn to much and used a fork for the stirring. Didn't even think about really dry stuff swelling up.
Anyways I mixed it all up with the fork and bitched every time it got my wrist. I didn't burn myself but other newbs like myself might want to take note of what they are using for the mixing ahead of time. I'll be getting myself a little garden shovel on Thursday for next time.

I used to HATE the smell of coir, especially the old way i used to prep it, when doing 4 bricks at a time it really stunk up the apartment, i dont mind it so much anymore, a note on this tek i almost kinda reckmoend you leave the brick whole as you do in the tek instead of breaking it apart first, seems to absorb the water more evenly.

Well if you poor boiling water which is 212 degrees over everything you then come back 30-60 minutes later to stir and break the brick up really well it will still be around 180 degrees. Especially if you leave the lid closed like I stated.

Great tek. I'll be doing this tonight or tomorrow. Thanks for the great write-up. I use big blocks of coir that are 8 or 9 times the size of a brick, so it was cool to see it mentioned here that a brick weighs 650 grams, as I've just been estimating the coir by eye and feel.
How often are you getting contams after the 3rd flush. Do you ever keep fruiting through the contamination, or is that when you dump the tub?
EDIT: does the top layer take the place of casing?

I don't get contams to often. I think I have had 2 contams right after the third flush, so I just tossed the tubs. I normally toss the tubs after the third flush anyways.
The top layer doesn't act as a casing layer. The top layer just covers up all the weak exposed mycelium that you beat up when you broke up your spawn jars. I cover it with a final top layer of coir so it is not exposed to the open air, this lowers your contamination rate as well. I normally don't use a casing layer, but when I do it is normally just a 1/4 inch layer of verm. I take some dry verm and spread it over the fully colonized substrate then once applied I mist it heavily that way it sticks to the surface.
