The top layer is to ensure there are no exposed grains which are more prone to contaminate than the substrate itself.

As already stated the top layer is so there is no exposed grains which lowers your chance of contamination. But your top layer doesn't need to be so thick, just enough to cover the grains. 1/4 inch or so.
I don't really let it consolidate I normally once it looks fully colonized from the outside put it into fruiting conditions. But if you want to let it consolidate go ahead and let it.
If it fits in your Shotgun then stick it in there.

Thanks for the help. 
Since you don't consolidate, how long till you usually see pins? And do you mean stick the container in the FC with the lid off, or take it out of the container and fruit as a big cake? Because both options would fit in the FC.

Either or you can stick the tub in or use it like a big cake. I normally see pins within about 7 days usually.

I saw pins in 4 days of putting one of my trays

And thats only colonized with 6 1/2 pint BRF cakes.

Glad your having success with my tek. That is why I made it cause it is super easy to do and it almost all cases it works and is Noob friendly to boot.
And yes my avatar has that effect on people.

Hi
Wanted to say thanks for this awesome tek! I have 3 tubs of PE and 1 tub of Ecuador going right now using your coir tek (my first grow!):)
I have a question for you. How do you sterilize your buckets so you can use it again? How do you sterilize your monotubs for reuse?

I don't really sterilize. I just wash them out really really well.
I fill the bucket about 3/4 of the way up with water throw in some dish soap and 3-4 cap fulls of bleach and scrub it down. Same with the tubs. Then the day before I plan on using them I wipe them down with a bleach wipe, and thats it.

This may sound silly, but the day before, you use a bleach wipe? Like just wipe it out with a paper towel soaked in bleach (or a product)? Do you rinse it afterwords to remove the residue (if any)?

I wipe the inside down with one of these. Then let it sit overnight and use it the next morning. I don't wipe it down again to get ride of any leftovers or anything. Below is some pics of my PE tub I just took the substrate out to pick off the sidepins before they decide to root. I am now gona soak the substrate for 12 hours to rehydrate it before putting back into fruiting conditions.

So you use the lysol wipes. Do you cover it overnight or let it air dry w/ no cover?
Sorry. I guess what I need to know is just how sterile these tubs/buckets need to be prior to reuse (or first use)

let them dry upside down so nothing (ie dust,contams) collects in them prior to using after you wipe them down.
