If the coir's in a brick, it's most likely good.  Hydroshops fortify coir with trich.  Trich is a beneficial microbe in the development of root growth.  In order to use coir chocked with trich for a mushroom culture, it'll need to be correctly pasteurized.  Coir that is safe to use with this tek is any type of coir intended for use as a reptile bedding/substrate.

Yep.  I have seen a brick of coir that says "Enhanced with Trichoderma!" on the front of it.  It was real obvious.  I've purchased coir bricks from a hydro shop and they turned out just fine.  Just look at the packaging, or if in doubt, go to a pet store and get the same brick marketed for bedding.  They're so expensive when they're for use with pets though. -.-

The coir I have is in bales....and I feel the same way 122 pages and a third of it consists of pimps and paper talk or similar chat..wasn't trying to be lazy at all.. Just smart enough not to read a bunch do chit chat if I didn't need to..

Can I prepare this at night, mix after 30-60 minutes and then just cover and let sit overnight and then use it in the morning?  Any tips on doing this?  Give the bucket a good shake after a couple hours maybe?

Yes you can do that. I stir after 1 hr. and then again at 2-3 hrs. And one last time right before I spawn.

I leave the lid on, as to help the water come to a boil quicker.

Common sense, but always need to confirm the obvious when doing this!

Thanks!

Love then simplicity of this tek. Thanks for sharing Damion! Started my first tub ever a couple days ago. I did however use slightly less verm and didn't cover in a trash bag. I always heard ambient light is good for colonizing. Thanks again for the tek Damion. Wish my tubs luck. PE strain

Yes, covering the tub in a trash bag is old/out-dated information.

What about for MSG's?  Isn't the bag necessary?  I know he said for Monotubs, but if there is a better way for MSG's, what is it?

Tape, saran wrap, clear plastic bag, the options are endless.  I prefer tape myself

Can I add extra verm safely without screwing up the moisture content?  I am going to use two 27 qt tubs and at 4", I need exactly 18 quarts of sub.

I only have 6 jars that will be ready in the next few days, so I'll be a bit short with the overall sub.  ~8 with 1 brick of coir + 6 spawn + 2 verm as the tek calls for, leaving me at 16 or so.  I am close to 3 qts short.

Is it better to just be short and fan more or can I add an extra 2 qts of verm?  I might be able to add an extra qt of spawn which would be ideal, but not sure if I'll have any jars available.

Or, I might be able to just remove a 0.5" from my tape line and drill another line of hole and make my sub 3-3.5"?

I'd stick to the tek.
Having a 3-3.5" substrate depth would be fine.

I have received multiple msg's and always get asked how do I prepare my coir, so I decided to create a coir tek, so here it is.  Hopefully everyone finds it helpful.

IN MY JOURNAL

Damion5050's Coir Tek

I have been asked several times how do I prepare my coir, so here is a quick step by step on how I prepare my coir.  I have done it this way about 20-25 times with no contamination's before the 3rd flush.  This is a very elementary tek but it works wonders.

Supplies Needed

1 Brick of Coir
2 Quarts of Verm
5 Quarts of Spawn
A 5 gallon bucket with a lid  <---NEED TO USE A BUCKET

STEP 1

For the above recipe I pour 4 quarts of water into a pan or in this case my Pressure Cooker.  I turn the heat up to high and wait for it to boil.

STEP 2

I place 1 brick of coir in a 5 gallon bucket. SIMPLE I know.

STEP 3

Pour 2 quarts of vermiculite into the 5 gallon bucket with the coir.

STEP 4

Take the boiling water off the stove.

STEP 5

Pour the boiling water into the 5 gallon bucket over the coir/verm mix.

STEP 6

Put the lid on the bucket and let it sit for 30-60 minutes.

STEP 7

After the 30-60 minutes you need to come back and stir everything up really well.  Place the lid back on it and let it sit for 2-4 hours.

STEP 8

Time to prepare the mono tub.  I put duct tape over all the holes in the tub.

STEP 9 Part A

After the 2-4 hours I then pour the coir into the mono tub and then test the temperature of the coir.  The temp of the coir needs to be 80-90 degrees before you can add spawn.  If it is to hot then place the lid on the mono tub and let it sit for another 2-4 hours.

STEP 9 Part B

Make sure you leave alittle bit of the coir in the bucket for a top layer.

STEP 10

When the temperature is right get your 5 quarts of spawn, and add it to the coir in the tub

STEP 11

Mix the spawn and the coir up really well.  Try and get the spawn throughout the coir evenly.

STEP 12

Now take that left over coir that was in the bucket and use it to put a top cover layer over the entire surface so that there are no exposed grains.

STEP 13

Now this step is optional but I do it.  I cover the entire tub with a black garbage bag and place it on a shelf of wherever you decide to.  Come back 10 days later and take a look at it and see how far along it is.

STEP 14

After the 10 days you need to check on the tub if it is 100% colonized then you need to put it into fruiting.  I do this by taking off the duct tape and stuffing the holes with polyfill, then introduce light and FAE.

I've got two monotubs consoling at the moment as per this tek. Sure makes pasteurizing a hell of a lot harder to screw up. Never had problems with moisture content :bigblunt:
