When you go mushroom hunting and find some nice Chanterelles, but neither you nor your hunting partners care much about edibles, so you just leave the Chanterelles there.
When you carry KOH on you at all times- just in case.

My friend carries it around with him because he really likes identifying Cortinarius and a lot of species have a colour changing reaction when you apply KOH to the tissue, so it is a useful identifying characteristic.
