growing portabella diff than P. Cubensis?
    #1110856 - 12/04/02 05:39 PM (21 years, 3 months ago)

I was wondering if you have to grow portabella differently than P. Cubensis? I know how to grow Cubies, and I have sucess with that, but I'm trying to grow Almond Portabella and I can't get it to colanize the top casing layer and pin. Can someone direct me in thr right direction? There isn't any info on growing gourmet here on the shroomery, or, I havn't been able to find any. Do I have to use different temps?

Different substrate, different temperature.

Look here:

Ok, I'll look into that. I got the pic from the Shroomery gallery. They have a nice selection, but I don't think I'm supposed to use them. IDK but WTH. My father recommended useing the sawdust and horse manure offered by the stable for the taking. I couldn't have found a more excelent source of substrate for that. Maybe I can also try Liberty caps on it too. (that's P. Semilanca (sp?) right?) I hear they're wood loving. Is this right?

Hello I am new around here.  I am currently working with almond Portobellas.  My experience with them is they are alot slower than cubenis mushrooms.  They take twice as long.  They like it slightly colder than cubenis.  If you use the same temps as cuby's (86 f) they will grow even slower.  These mushrooms take a little more time.  It took 2 weeks for mine to colonize the casing layer at room temperature.
good luck I hope you enjoy this species as well as I did.

i noticed it took noticably longer to colanize than Cubies. What temp should I use for pinning and colanization? In the winter it's about 65-70 in the house but in the summer it's about 70-75. I would appreciate any and all info I can get about Portabellas. What tek did u use? Did u case?

I used room temperature about 70 F through the whole process.  The casing layer I used was 50/50 vermiculite and coco fiber and was a little over 1" thick.  The substrate I used was  Horse poo , chopped and shredded straw and sawdust all at equal amounts. I am starting round 2 with them.  I enjoyed growing these alot.  I hope to get some pictures  this time   I am going to let a few grow to maturity to get some prints to share:)

I grew at around 70 F throughout colonization, then dropped the temp to about 60 for a week and re-raised it to 70 with good results. I don't know what it would stack up to comparatively, but it colonized the horse manure/shredded straw/peat in about 2.5 or 3 weeks.

Yup....they are a. bisporus (in Stamets' speak). Although commercial growers tend to do strain selection for strains that grow well to a large size and have other marketable characteristics.

That reminds me...I have some in the fridge that I need to eat....ummmm....clone!
