 Marijuana Compounds May Help Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Compounds found in cannabis (marijuana) may help relieve symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease. The two compounds, cannabinoids THC and cannabidiol, have an impact on the body system that controls the function of the intestinal tract.
Inflammatory bowel diseases include ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, which together affect more than 1 million people in the United States. Although these diseases are related and both involve chronic inflammation of the intestinal tract, along with abdominal cramps, bloody diarrhea, and fever, they are not the same. One main difference is that ulcerative colitis can be cured with surgery, but Crohn’s disease cannot.
Inflammatory bowel disease most often develops in people between the ages of 10 and 30, although a smaller peak has been seen in people ages 50 to 60. The cause is unknown, although experts believe both genetic and environmental factors are involved. More specifically, it is proposed that a genetic susceptibility is triggered by factors such as stress, diet, or bacteria, which then leads to a dysfunctional immune response and inflammation.
Treatment of inflammatory bowel disease involves symptom relief. In this new study, the results of which were presented at The British Pharmacological Society’s winter meeting in London, researchers noted that the body produces its own cannabinoid molecules, which are called endocannabinoids. These molecules increase the permeability of the protective lining of the intestines during inflammation, which allows bacteria to escape into the intestinal tract. This suggests that overproduction of these molecules is harmful to the gut.
The researchers also found, however, that they could reverse this process when they introduced cannabinoids derived from marijuana. These plant-extracted compounds “appeared to allow the epithelial cells to form tighter bond with each other and restore the membrane barrier,” noted Dr. Karen Wright, the study’s lead author and the Peel Trust Lecturer in Biomedicine at Lancaster University.
So far the research on the marijuana compounds against inflammatory bowel disease has been limited to cell cultures, but the investigators are encouraged by the results thus far. Dr. Wright also noted that “while THC has psychoactive properties,” cannabidiol does not, and it has proven to be effective in restoring membrane integrity in their research on inflammatory bowel disease.

I have Ulcerative Colitis and all the expensive crap that my Dr. has been giving me has lots of side effects and hasn't helped at all! I hope they need volunteers for their research on cannabis

my sister has ulcerative colitis and was prescribed maridol. however only to help with the hunger from the chemo she was doing

I've had IBS since a bad catmeat rollup in Sumatra....i was starving and usually u can tell which of the vendors is good by the locals choices...but not this time.
damn near died of a perforation of the intestine...it almost ate its way through before i could get to western medicine.
medical bud will help amazingly. mids and schwag are totally ineffective.
the JWH is a cure. not sure i want to do it forever, but it is nice.
damn near a normal person again while i have it and for about a week afterwards.
makes me want to start growing and doing honey oil extractions again....bet that would do it too, and i know it's safe.

My brother has this disorder.
He is highly against weed and has no clue of its medical capabilities... his medicine is probably very expensive compared to weed too.

well, i'm not sure.
but in sumatra, they eat the damndest things.
a lot of times, it's really, really mystery meat.
cat is my worst nightmare, and whatever it was sure fucked me up.
could have been anything.
I'd been out on my own in the brush for a bit, cooked food looked wonderful. I probably wasn't as careful as I would have been otherwise.

I have IBS and have had it since I was 11 years old. I am 19 now and have been an avid marijuana smoker for the past 5 years. Since I have started using it, it has helped me out drastically. Whenever I usually run to the bathroom 10+ times a day, I will sit down, smoke a blunt of good mids to the face and all of my pains and running to the bathroom are gone! It's pure medicine! I love it. People are going to the doctor getting prescribed all these medicines and I am at home hitting the bong and its solving all of my problems. Weed is one hell of a medicine but getting the general public to believe that is extremely difficult. It has been easier here recently though.

JWH was so effective, for a week after i smoked it for 3 days, only a 1/4 gram total ( I know that's a lot, but I'm a chronic smoker)...it still let me pretend I didn't even have IBS.
I can only hope that a steady diet of it will be as effective; for that alone I am willing to take my chances on the long term effects.
I'm taking my chances on the long term effects of the crap the prescribe me for it, and it doesn't get me high or work half as well.
