Psychotria...

Some pics of my psychotria growth over the past 12 months...
P. carthaginensis Jan 09

Dec 09

P. viridis Jan 09

Dec 09

They are growing in a fairly dry climate, in a small greenhouse outside. I put clear plastic sheeting around the viridis to increase the humidity and this really helped their growth and leaf integrity. What do ya think?

Wow... I can't WAIT to get a greenhouse... If all goes well I will have a really nice Rion greenhouse in less than 6 months.... I would love to be able to grow my Viridis nice and big like that without having some sort of ghetto-made dome over the top of it...

I think they look very good.
You've just helped me make up my mind about buying one of those greenhouses. I've been thinking about it recently.

Man, I am so jealous of those P.Viridis plants you have. I have planted many PV seeds and nothing has sprouted yet. Good Job Mufungo

Cheers guys.
Getafixx, I bought these as plants, I couldn't grow any from seed yet either..
themallacht, I'm using a dodgy greenhouse which is a few pipes stuck together with a plastic cover, bought from the hardware store. It has shelves, so I partitioned a section off with clear plastic sheeting.

Nice plants. I had too many Psychotria alba plants, so picked my best one to bring indoors for the winter and left the rest outside. Despite enduring a handful of nights in sub-freezing temperature, they are amazingly still alive. I figured the first night of low 30's would have killed them.

Not so much fakes as people confusing their p. alba with viridis.

Sorry for the delay, but here are some shots of the greenhouse inwhich my psychotria are growing...

I picked the greenhouse up from the hardware store for $60AU and I bought some extra clear plastic to partition a section for the viridis. It shows that they can be grown with some success in a dry climate!

During summer I think it cops the sun from about 10am to 6pm, but I've got some black shade cloth in the greenhouse, so the plants don't get much direct sun.

Thanks. I got them as rooted cuttings back in November 2008 from an Aussie online source (PM me if you want to know the company). Check out the OP and you'll see the sort of growth they did in a year.
The greenhouse is a cheap piece of rubbish but it does the job. The sun is destroying the plastic, so I'll have to buy some more clear plastic to patch it up before winter starts. I got it from the hardware store (that starts with B) for about 70 bucks.

There only two online sources I can think of here in Aus, that sell Psychotria. I assume it's one of the two.
Yeah, Bunnings crap. No doubt the same sort of quality that their mini greenhouses are. Still, if it works, it's good enough. A proper greenhouse would be great though.

Props for the nice plants!
Everyone says that P. cartha grows faster than viridis, and your pics seem to confirm that. But although your viridis are smaller in size they still seem to have as many leaves as the cartha.
I just bought some cartha to grow indoor, and choose this species because they're supposed to grow faster, but I may have done the wrong choice... a smaller size is more convenient (especially indoor) provided we get the same amount of leaves.
Do you think it is a characteristic of the species or just the result of your particular growing conditions?

The carthagenensis has been growing outside of the plastic enclosure, so has been toughing it a bit in drier weather. Whilst the viridis have been growing within the plastic enclosure which greatly increases the humidity.. so much that condensation often is dripping within. I think that's why the viridis look so healthy.

My psychotria grow too slow. Those are about 1 year old. I moved them into a plastic about two months ago. I see that roots start to get out of the holes of the pot. Should I move them to a bigger one?

Probably wouldn't hurt to put them in a slightly bigger pot - or use the same pot but put more soil under the soil that's there so it's higher in the pot - from that photo it looks like there's quite a bit of pot not being utilised. They also look like they need sun, cause they're a littel pale. The rim of the pot might be blocking some of the sung getting to them. How warm is it where you are?

Do you think humidifying them a couple of times a days with a vaporizer would help recreating the wet climate they normaly grow in, or is it a waste of an effort?

I have mine in full sun filtered by black shade cloth. They get bits and pieces of sun without shade cloth throughout the day. Experiment a little, but keep the humidity high.

Probably a waste of your time if they aren't in some sort of enclosure. Constantly changing the humidity in their environment might not be good either. But you could try it for a few weeks and if you don't see them responding in a healthy way, then you'd have your answer.

Hey hey!
Here are some photos I took last week. They're going alright. The P. carthagenensis (or alba depending on your opinion) isn't loving the dry climate but it's still powering on. I've found that the P. viridis doesn't like to be moved around that much. Last year I neglected them a little and they died back. But they seem to have recovered over this summer..
