best way to tell when they are done is the mycl will pull away from the jar as it consolidates, or you begin to see pinsform. then dunk and water for 24 hours, roll them in verm. mist with some water and place in the fc.

I swear verm has nutrients that mycelium eats too... no joke.

Mycelium consumes vermiculite all the time, albeit slowly, but still consumes it.

I never used it in substrates, but maybe it's worth a shot. Casing layer yes, but substrate no.

Thanks Taco,
In the last 24 hours, 3 pins have formed in one jar, one almost over 1 cm long, with about 6 more popping up in a cluster.  Thing is, the bottom doesn't look completely colonized; there's still verm showing.  Is this just verm trapped between the jar and the cake? These pins literally showed up while i was sleeping last night! Do i birth this guy? Remove pins before dunking? Check the pics and see what you think, this is my first time.

just wondering also...I'm getting ready to birth and fruit P.F cakes, just built a shotgun F.C.  Should i put damp perlite in a few days prior to give humidity a head start? need distilled water and peroxide for perlite or not?  The room humidity is only at 26% in the cold, dry north woods, is this a problem? I have purchased a small cool mist deal in case i need room humidity/F.C. modifications.  Plan on having F.C. on coffee table about 3 feet off of floor, should I further elevate F.C. from table for those bottom holes?  This will be about five feet from big window in room, shades up during the day for lighting.  Any suggestions for a first timer? Thanks much

watch those it will help alot.

no peroxide unless you get cobweb mold.  nothing else.

and you can birth those just be gentle with pins.  you can leave them on during the dunk just be easy while rolling in verm.

When I first started with my Shotgun, I added the perlite a few days before and got everything prepped for the grow. Add it and make sure you can keep the humidity right on.
I personally just used sink water to rinse my perlite off with then dumped it into the F.C.
If you have holes on the bottom of your shotgun, then yes id raise it up a bit.
Goodluck and enjoy!

Hi folks,

I'm birthing 3 cakes tomorrow, i fixed up my perlite F.C yesterday.  I have about 3 1/2" damp perlite in the chamber, but cannot get the humidity inside past 89%.  I have been running the cool mist humidifier directly next to the F.C. on the high setting and the humidity is rising inside, but will the rest of my partially colonized jars be okay in this room with this much ambient humidity?
      Thanks
Z

you need 5" + to keep humidity above 95% at all times.

your coolmist is creating fae (by blowing through) and carrying your humidity away.  turn it off and add more perlite.

humidity in the room doesnt effect nor matter to colonizing jars. only after you birth them.

coolmist humidifiers are used for mini-greenhouse setups you dont need it.:sun:

sweet thanks dude,
I'll add more damp perlite tonight, but i read that ambient humidity should be at 30%; mine will only be at about 25% if i don't run the humidifier. Can i still put my cakes in tomorrow even if my F.C. isn't past 90%? I'm sure i can get it there soon enough, i must!  I gotta fuit these, the pins the showed up yesterday have doubled in size and more are popping up! This is nuts...
      Thanks again
Z

Birth them and dunk them now!  You can tweak the fc later but I am sure if it is a Shot gun FC then the added perlite and no more cool mist the humidity will be fine.

if its pinning that quick then fruit the cake with all the pins.  you can dunk and roll after every harvest.  if Im late and you already dunked them :ohwell: doesnt matter its prob better that they get a drink for fruiting anyway.  your just a couple days away from mushies. :mushroom2:

13 I didn't dunk yet, but i'm minutes away! just tried to update new pics, but couldn't. 2 pins an inch long, about 4 more a cm or so in length, looks nice! birth this cake without dunking or rolling? after 1st flush? like my pic above, bottom completely covered in mycl, but not a flat white(can see many specks of verm).  Gonna go for it!
    Thanks

you will be fine either way at this point.  dunk and roll now is always better.  but its ok if you want to put it in the fc to get fruits sooner then dunk it after it flushes.  you should dunk and roll as many times as your cakes keep poppin mushies.
