I too am interested in the straw shiitake, however, I have a few questions. Is there any info available regarding the preparation of the straw substrate, colonizing and fruiting conditions, yields, etc. I am thinking that shiitake does not colonize as fast as oysters and simple pasturization of the straw may not be enough to let the shiitake get ahead of contams.

You'd have to call Aloha Medicinals.
Although, I suspect that Aloha wouldn't be carrying nor using an inferior nor uncolonizable strain for a straw based shiitake. I'm pretty sure that this shiitake will colonize the straw plenty fast enough. Outside of that, shiitake is still the same parameters, same methods of preparing the substrate and so forth. Nothing is different between strains when pasteurizing/sterilizing a substrate. Pasteurizing and sterilizing are both standard procedures.

i have had straw bags that r in a cold area take 1 month to colonize and never even colonize all the way and i fruit them. so i'm not sure if it would take more than pasturization. i think pasterizing would work. but we will have to see. maybe just a higher spawn ratio.

I believe RogerRabbit has this strain so we can wait to see what he thinks. The point with having a well performing strain on straw would be that you could get nice yields of shiitake and only have to pasteurize for it. That to me is a lot better than having to go through sterilizing + sterile procedure every time. Straw is pretty cheap/effortless .

I contacted Aloha Medicinals and received this reply
"All Shiitakes grow better on sawdust rather than straw. Our straw strain will grow and fruit on straw though. The usual method is to add a nitrogen amendment to the straw, such as wheat bran, dog food or Alfalfa. The straw will have to be sterilized, as the nitrogen amendment will cause greater contamination possibilities.
When grown on straw, the inoculum should be liquid preferably, not grain spawn. Straw spawn could be made, but does not work as well.
I Highly recommend shiitake be grown on sawdust as the yields will be higher and the problems will be fewer.
For your other questions regarding spawn run, temp, fruiting etc, just follow normal protocols for growing shiitake. I hope this advice helps.

That sucks. Its more of a novelty strain on straw.

That's interesting. Thank you for that mention from Aloha.
Your right Clone...not terribly useful. Especially if you have to sterilize to get decent yields regardless of straw or not. The only "benefit" (if you can call it that) is skipping the grain spawn step. I'm second guessing whether this is worth putting the $$$ into it.

That's pretty disappointing, i thought the strain would have some unique properties worthy of merit.
I'm out then. Doesn't seem worth the trouble if it takes 2 or 3 extra steps just to get inferior results compared to sawdust/woodchips.
Thanks for sending that email out for us M8M!

I vote for Agarikon. I would put $20 towards an agarikon culture.

Dictyophora Indusiata. "When they find it, they sniff it. The scent of this mushroom causes sexual arousal, often to the point of orgasm."
I think I will donate to this one.
