Heating air ducts in commercial grow room
    #11626340 - 12/10/09 10:56 PM (4 years, 4 months ago)

Hey there-
I need some quick tips on ways to heat air ducts in a grow room. I grow oyster mushrooms in a large room (unheated) and intake air from outside to increase ventilation in the grow room. But recently, the temperatures dropped very quickly (30s-40s) and growth has slowed drastically.

I'm thinking there must be an easy fix for hooking up a small heater inside the air duct so that the air coming into the grow room is the right temperature. Does anybody have any tips or specific heaters that would work really well?

This is on a commercial scale and so I need something reliable with a good degree of control.

Thanks very much!

What about using something like a car radiator in reverse?
Hook up a hot water heater, pump hot water through the radiator, then bring the cool air in over that.

Thanks for the quick reply! That's not a bad idea. Actually another thing I was thinking, which is along those lines, is to temporarily hook up the misting system (which is overhead and is on a timer to raise the humidity) to a hot water tap. Do you think that would be a problem spraying warm (100-120F) mist through the air to try and raise the temps?

It'll make wicked condensation. If that's ok, then I guess give it a try.

I use a 44gal drum with a 12kw element to heat the water, which is then run through car radiators and fans to spread it in the room.  For every KW I can lift my house temp by a degree, so when 0 degC outside I can get the inside temp to 12 degC.

This does work well.  You will find that the air coming from the radiator is very dry and you must introduce extra humidity.

The problem is when air is hotter, it's potential to hold water increases dramatically, so when you heat air without adding water vapor, the RH drops through the floor.

My suggestion would be to put a big pot of boiling water on so that you add humidity with the heat.

If you an use an electric hot plate instead of flame, you won't have CO2 problems either.

Or you could use 50 warm mist humidifiers.

They also make ceiling mounted exhaust fan heat exchangers that allow you to warm the outgoing air with the incoming.  Using this, though I think you'd still have to add vapor.

Good growing,

Jef

I vaguely recall reading in GGMM Paul Stamets recommending having a boiler and venting steam into the air intake in cold winter months to boost temperature and to get a free humidity boost at the same time. Too lazy to look it up right now though...

Regarding temperature, I'd try to heat the incoming with the outgoing air. Simple heat exchange might dramatically reduce heating costs.
For raising humidity there are also passive solutions possible, like pumping incoming air through a bucket filled with moist perlite, clay pellets or similar things.

Thanks for all the tips! I ended up getting a couple of space heaters and ran them to heat the room for a quick fix. Thankfully, the weather also turned for the better and temperature is back up to a comfortable range. I'll look into some of your suggestions though for more long-term solutions

do u move the air all the time?? maybe like somekinda hot water wick that lets the air go through it..i would think u could get a heater witha good fan and use it to suck air into your room. might mess up the rh . or maybe blow the incoming air over one of those oil filled heaters. how bigs the room/?
