1 is enough. Not sure what overkill would be. But if you are using a box to grow in, more than one would be more than enough IMO. But im sure it wouldn't hurt to have more lights as long as they don't raise your temps too much.

Thanks! One last thing, when using drinking glasses would you recommend

1. making a "lid" from tin foil, with 4 holes just like in a regular jar lid, and then covering it with another foil layer as water protection during pot (steam) sterilization, or

2. covering the jar with just one piece (perhaps folded) of tin foil without any holes, sterilizing, and then making 4 tiny holes with the needle during inoculation. Would they be enough for GE during colonization?

Those are the two methods I've found on these forums. Also in either method, during sterilization, should I try to make the jar airtight by twisting a thin copper wire tightly around the foil? The side of a glass is smooth and I'm afraid steam would find a way between glass and foil, but on the other hand wouldn't the pressure inside a hot "jar" blow the foil away or break it if it's airtight? I think the pressure shouldn't be too big but just want to make sure.

foil it, sterilize it, make holes with needle, cover with another piece of foil

"So the steam is touching the jar from the outside, rising the temperature of the substrate inside the jar and thus sterilizing it? Just curious."

That is why steam is so useful for this, it penetrates the substrate.

I read that as it penetrates a new, cooler, area it condenses and contracts,
and that this pulls in more steam.

Good luck,

JD

There has been another development that rose some questions. My jars are colonizing at a different rates. Im not too worried about that because colonization is still proceeding fine. However some are already 100% colonized and some are around 60-70%.I was wondering if its okay to let them consolidate extra few days because I want to birth them all in the same time therefore those that colonized faster will have to stay extra 2-3 days in the jars on top of 7 day consolidation period. Will it affect the development of fruits? Also, if anyone know what might lead to such result?

Hi guys,

I have a question.
I will grow B+ strain in drinking glasses, since I was not able to get jars.
So I'm gonna use foil to cover them (of course I will put dry vermiculite as a top layer for substrate).
The question is - after inoculation (I will inoculate through foil), should I put back the second layer of foil and tighten it or don't put it back, just leave the first foil layer with holes in it?

Thanks

You will need the needle holes for GE.

The dry verm layer will protect the grow.

Good luck,

JD

Thanks!
I have read fungifun.org article for PF TEK and they leave second layer of foil to cover inoculation holes.
Why is that method wrong?

P.S. sorry for being so snoopy. Its just that I will grow for the first time and want to avoid contamination  :hi:

You want some way of letting the gasses enter/escape and your dry verm layer should be a buffer for outside contamination. Just make sure you insert your needle below the dry verm.

you can leave the one layer of foil nice and snug and the dry verm should....I say should protect from most contams.

It is wrong because without GE a grow will stall.

Isn't it better to keep the jars upsides down all the time so CO2 can fall out and let fresh O2 in? Just a thought...

No. You want GE & having them upside down would restrict it.

Little off topic at the moment but do you have to use sterilized verm for the dunk and roll? Either or?
