I haven't delivered the photos I promised, my mid-August cyan pins from a couple of weeks ago got completely munched by slugs and dried out by the sun. Over the last week I've been removing slugs when they come out to find food in the middle of the night, they live in the space between the inner surface of the pot and the soil. I think I've got rid of virtually all of them. (relocated, not killed incidentally), is this a battle other people are fighting? Tempting them out with beer in a jar lid is recommended for those who don't want to put poisonous chemicals near their precious myc! The slugs are these;- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limax_flavus
and wikipedia says they eat fungi! I wonder if they eat the myc below the ground at all, or only the fruiting bodies.

I heard that their shelled brethren can find their way back to a food source from 30 meters or so...
when I did a harvest, I was lucky enough to be able to surround my pots with a ring of salt and keep it sheltered from the rain (well kinda, had to top the salt up a few times, but it's cheap as fuck so that's ok)

they could be in the pots quite easily, they squeeze into the smallest of spots. so midnight vigilance is a good idea too

halfway through reading the thread and am hooked....line and sinker:mushroom2:

Did have a thought, as many of your beds are well established and prints en masse are easy to come across, would it be a good idea to try and get some wildlife to spread the spores far and wide??. I'm thinking migrating birds North to South, vise versa, this would almost grantee distribution of spores near waterways on their travels.

Or colonised WBS fed to birds, (if they survived through the gut) could be distributed by bird life as they may drop grains off near trees when they roost.

:justdontknow:

I dunno if mycelium would survive a birds gut...
I'd say the spores would, but how could you get them to eat the spores? I guess you could put a layer of grains under the fruits, get them all covered then leave them out in a park or something?

seems like a bit of a crap shot, but if you're overwhelmed with spores, might be an idea

Birdbaths, just being in contact with the spores would be enough to spread them wide!

I give you the choice of 2 pills.

With each containing one of the following:
Cyanide... Psilocin... Would you take the risk?
Didn't think so.

I'm thinking about spreading cyans in my area too, was for a long walk around my town and found a lot of wood chips everywhere! Some of them would be a perfect spots for cyans  :mushroom:

How to get such prints? How do you spread them from prints onto wood chips?

well if i get any prints from my allenii you're more than welcome to them
loads of ways to get them going. grain -> cardboard -> woodchips seems like a go-er

otherwise, use the search engine

Not sure about wood chip type. Sure I'm going to check this season what is growing in there  There's also a lot of new places that have been finished this year so there's no point even checking in there... That's why I wanted to spread spores over there :mushroom:

Thanks keeno, that seems to be the best way

my Allenii grow has hit a few problems... gonna wait some more, they could just have gotten dry, but I think there's a few more problems than that. I dig around and there's hardly any myc in it at all, so we'll see once a cold snap comes. I'll do a write up anyways, but will have to rethink for next year
my Cyans I got from that giveaway didn't make it past the first hurdle. 3 separate attempts to get them going on grains resulted in zilch (with the Allenii's doing grand)

good luck to everyone else! I hope you've had more luck that me

Be sure and pound big 5-10" thick rounds vertically at bottom of your beds.
If started with enough healthy woodlovers spawn the big underground log cps help culture survive nasty conditions. These buggers EAT and turn wood to nothing or mud. Feed beds regularly. Check for hungry growth and cover it with food. Beds can last many years but they instinctively migrate. Because some species of woodlovers are mycorrhizal it's great to make beds around perennial berry bushes and shrubs.

thanks for the tips Rhizo, I'll certainly take them into account if I get room to do proper beds. I've had to improvise this year and make some big trays in those containers they trasnport bread in

I think one of my big problems was woodchips that were old, a bit moudly and didn't pasteurise them...
