Thinking about it, that would make more sense.
According to wikipedia some species of moss can hold up to 20 times their dry weight in water!!! - no wonder mushrooms like moss.

Best of luck with your Estonian cyans:thumbup:

Indeed, moss does hold a lot of water... will be sure to let you know if I have any luck with the cyans.

I'd be more than happy to receive some!
Got a garden full of woodchips and another full 10kg bag of the stuff itching to get used! Also, off the top of my head, I can think of dozens of 'out of the way' places that have piles of fresh woodchips that have been dumped!
Isn't the mycelium still illegal though? Ah well.... just send me a PM!

CHESHIRE AGAIN! [Re: daz01]
    #13380098 - 10/24/10 02:31 PM (2 years, 6 months ago)

What I should have done today was head out to Wales bright and early to spend the day hunting mushrooms and hanging out with my sister's family - the kids are on half-term.  It didn't go to plan because I started the day very late, and had to go shopping, and postponed Wales until tomorrow.

So this afternoon I got on my bike and headed for a park in Cheshire, where I have previously found libs around the deer.  On the way I stopped to check woodlands, where there were clusters of Hebeloma, Auricularia auricula judae in abundance, some pretty Mycena pura and several types of Trametes, and I forget what else.  My camera has a cracked screen and a lens error that I can get around but it takes forever so I snapped whatever I saw using the Camera Magic app on my droid phone, which gives quite good focus although it doesn't like motion (app crashes).  Then I got to the park and sadly couldn't find any libs.  I snapped some deer.

Before leaving I thought I would check around some felled wood, which in that location has in the past yielded a nice variety of fungi.  What I found was more of the same, some Psathyrella...

And a patch of Psilocybe cyanescens that was beyond my wildest expectations.  I snapped and grabbed at them until my satchel was full, which was about a third of what I could see.  I could have had more but I wanted mycelium as well, so my bag filled also with earth, twigs and mushrooms.

On returning home, damn, Camera fkn Magic has recorded a load of 0 byte files!

Fortunately I took so much substrate with me this is practically a habitat shot:

Camera troubles aside, God was smiling on this half-arsed procrastinator today.
:mjdance:

Wow! Sunnuvabitch beautiful haul! and from something you weren't even after. That is some great stuff Joie. Cheers. They were really not growing in woodchips? but rather twigs and sawdust etc? I can only dream of such a find. Nicely done.

Guys thank you very much for sharing in this joy!

They were growing around a felled tree, and I really could have missed them because I had spent ages trying to distinguish the brackets and observing same old, same old.  Perhaps a guerilla is to thank, but there are gardens and a lot of organic matter flows through the park.  Anyway this is a lot of stem butts and mycelium to play with now, so I can give something back to the community.
