Thirty two suspects — including the mayor of Brockton — will remain in jail on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation over Thanksgiving awaiting arraignment on prescription pill trafficking charges, police said Tuesday.
Brockton Mayor Benjamin "Benny" Johnson was arrested Tuesday on felony charges of complicity in the sale of dangerous drugs, said Elliott Tapaha, spokesman for the Roosevelt County Sheriff's Department.
Undersheriff Ron Kemp said Johnson is accused of selling two 30 milligram morphine sulfate ER pills for $70 on Aug. 5.
"He is alleged to have provided pills to the person who sold them to our undercover agent," Kemp said.
"Benny won't be arraigned until Friday," Tapaha said. "So the mayor of Brockton will be spending Thanksgiving in jail."
He joins 31 other suspects named in warrants issued by the Fort Peck tribal court last week following an eight-month investigation, dubbed "Operation New Beginning."
They were arrested Monday by a regional team of about 50 law enforcement officers from Roosevelt, Sheridan, Daniels, Richland and Valley counties, as well as officers from the Montana Highway Patrol, the Fort Peck tribal police department, and the Glasgow and Wolf Point police departments.
"I don't have the resources to combat a problem of this magnitude, so our brother sheriffs stepped in to help me today," Roosevelt County Sheriff Freedom Crawford said Monday evening.
Five other suspects arrested Monday were arraigned and bailed out on bonds ranging from $2,500 to $25,000, Tapaha said.
Monday's roundup was just a beginning, the sheriff said.
"This is the tip of the iceberg," Crawford said. "I guarantee you there will be more arrests made. Our goal is to get people off drugs, to get people to quit drug trafficking and to protect our community and our children."

I hate it when they use the word alleged. If every allegation has to be taken seriously, why doesn't everybody blame a politician?

Let me get this straight....they arrested 32 people for 2 30mg pills of morphine? I can understand putting that overcharging dickhead in jail for selling $5 pills for $70, but where do the other people come in at?

Wow Those MScotin 30's suck! The cop should have known it was a bust when he was offered $35 for pills not worth $5 each. Hell, I hate paying that much for oc80's
