low humidity while incubating/cleaning of incubation rooom [Re: ZLeiterman]
    #11588876 - 12/05/09 07:37 AM (2 years, 5 months ago)

Hey all,
I'm a new cultivator with 13 pf jars colonizing(2 different strains) for 10 days on bookshelf with regular room lighthing, no lightbulbs, not in complete darkness.Lids are on tight, inoculation holes through micropore tape, foil covering holes. Everything seems to be going well;11 out of 13 jars have shown minimal to opitmal signs of growth, one strain is nearly 50% colonized, other strain is a bit sluggish, but moving. Should i loosen lids/remove foil on the slow guys? Also, I purchased a digital thermometer/hygrometer yesterday to monitor room tempertature.  I am incubating with a room temperature of 75 F, but it displays R.H at only 22! is this bad for my jars, should i get a humidifier rolling?  I plan on using this same room for fruiting, using the perlite method in shotgun terrerium.  I also want to dust and vaccuum this room in about a week, so i'm thinking i take my jars to a previously cleaned room, clean the incubation room, wait a day, then return the jars? Things are going really well, but I have a tendency to mess things up at these times in a mad panic!  I'd appreciate any advice for a noob.

sounds like youre doing everything right so far
good job, the only thing i would do is take the foil off the jars
the mycelium needs to breathe while colonizing

the humidity in your room does not matter much at this stage
its when you fruit them you want it to be high

as for cleaning the room, sounds like you got a plan
move em out clean up move em back in

good luck with your future project

Thanks again for the sage wisdom Noobieshroomie, but I am still conflicted.  I have heard to take the foil off for gas/air exchange, and the barrier of dry verm will filter out the baddies, but christ i'm afraid to even breathe when LOOKING at them, let alone take the foil off when i inspect the jars (I can't believe how patient i've been; only handled them twice in 10 days!). And then I hear that there is enough gas/FAE if you leave the foil on as long as there are holes in the lid. I'm just really afraid of contams, and then one jar messing up everything else. As i stated, about 5 jars of the same strain are really taking off (I know i'm a noob and really wouldn't know, but i see new mycelia joining DAILY ona particular strain; the other strain(8 jars)was incubated in a dark cupboard for a week with very little growth if nothing, so i put six of them on the bookshelf with the other guys, and now they are slowly beginning to colonize, one is super aggressive in particular). So this whole darkness thing is bunk as described in ALL OF ROGER RABBITS NOTES? or is it just a slow strain/old spores for these guys? Tell you what, for the sake of the experiment, I will remove foil from 1 jar on each strain (the slower looking ones)and record my data.
        Thanks again buddy

its ok to be nervous the firs time you grow
lord knows i was but the dry verm layer is really all you need

and keeping the jars in the dark has been outdated for a while
jars in an open room exposed to regular light is just fine

let us know how much faster they colonize with the foil off
and keep up the good work

Does anyone know how temp effects colonization if its too cold (>65?) is this something to be concerned about or will it just slow down the process?

it will slow down the process
if it gets too cold it can stall your cakes tho

try to keep them in the 70's for best results

i fruit in cold temps, but try and keep my colonization temps above 70...above 75  if can

it will still colonize...sloooowly, and pin slowly, and fruit slowly.

if youre colonizing that cold, you might have to introduce to warmer climates to get it to even start producing primordia and pins

try and take it to a high shelf, where if its 65 in your house, it might be 70+ on a high shelf.

or a small space heater for closet/room...just be cautious with these

Good evening,
I've got 12 pf jars at 3 weeks in. 3 of em have mycelium completely covering sides and bottom of jar, and others are following suit. But I'm wondering how do you know if colonization is complete under the verm barrier? I can clearly distinguish the verm barrier from my healthy substrate at a two dimensional view(some mycelium even seems to be reaching up into the verm barrier). Is this why we give them an extra week before birthing, duh? Just curious, I'm so close...so i plan to begin fruiting in a week?!
