Man, you've got to define 'smart'.
He's got terrible judgment(e.g. his handling of cockroaches, his ignorance of his ex-gf cheating on him when I suggested it a few times in his relationship, and him flunking out of one of his math classes cuz he wasn't prepared, while I warned him it would happen).
So, he's good at math, so what? He's not willing to put-forth the time to practice it, just does his best at memorizing formulas and knowing how to apply them. Doesn't mean much, IMO. He's such an addict, I can't envision him going far in his teaching career- something's bound to happen, and he'll lose his license.

I truly think Coaster is a good guy, he's got a good heart, but is on the wrong path. He doesn't think so- but don't drugs bring out the most denial in us?
If you caught me dropping X every weekend and asked if I had a problem, I'd have laughed in your face and reminded you I was 17. It took a few years to grow out of that stage, and managed a straight path at 20. I still do pods every now and then, smoke a few hits, but I have my priorities in check.
I think people can healthily incorporate drugs into their lifestyle without letting them define who they are- of course, that's their freedom to do so if they choose. BUT, that doesn't block me from making my rational predictions, and so far he's got 4/4 affirmed.
