State May Move to Ban Everclear 151

State officials will meet today to discuss whether to halt sales of Everclear 151 in Iowa in response to an incident last week at Drake University, when a 19-year-old student ingested cups of Everclear — the strongest liquor available on store shelves — as part of an alleged fraternity hazing event.
The event lead to an emergency room visit at a Des Moines-area hospital, where the student registered a blood-alcohol content of nearly 0.50. Police have charged two Phi Delta Theta members with hazing, and the fraternity’s Drake charter was revoked on Monday.
Everclear with 190-proof content — or 95 percent alcohol — was banned from Iowa liquor-store shelves six months ago, said Lynn Walding, the administrator for Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division, which regulates how much and what kind of alcohol is sold in the state. He said the only function of Everclear 190 now is to clean petri dishes and other items.
Walding will meet with other division officials at 1:30 p.m. in Ankeny, Iowa, to discuss banning the high-proof liquor.
“The Drake incident hasn’t been our first occurrence,” Walding said.
Doug Alberhasky, the manager of John’s Grocery, 401 E. Market St., compared Everclear to “going out and drinking diesel fuel” and said drinkers “can’t really do anything worse.”
“There are a number of ways to drink yourself to death,” Alberhasky said. “But Everclear is the surest way to do that.”
He thinks that banning Everclear, a neutral grain spirit that contains twice as much alcohol as standard vodka, would mean state regulators are missing the point entirely, he said.
“It’s common sense that you shouldn’t drink that much, and the state cannot ban stupidity,” Alberhasky said, noting he believes most people drink responsibly. “Banning something like this because of one bad judgment is asking for trouble.”
Matt Fitzgerald, a UI junior, said he thinks Everclear’s effects are potentially dangerous.
“I have drank it a few times with juice,” Fitzgerald said. “The scary thing is I only remember one or two of those times when someone told me in the morning.”
Darrin Aisenbrey, the owner of Liquor Downtown, 315 S. Gilbert St., said the establishment hardly sells any of the spirit. Alberhasky echoed that sentiment, emphasizing he’s sold less than a case in the past month.
“Besides the Everclear, we also have Bacardi that is 151-proof,” Aisenbrey said. “But we don’t see the demand for either one like we have for vodka. We will sell the occasional pint each month, but that’s not much at all.”
As of October, Iowa businesses had purchased about 2,500 cases of Everclear 151 this year, according to the Alcohol Beverages Division. Everclear 151 costs around $15 per bottle.
Alberhasky, for one, isn’t too concerned about what decision state officials make at Thursday’s meeting. He said his alcohol business does not cater to the crowd who wants to “get drunk” but rather to older people who appreciate the taste of good alcohol.
“We really strive for the mantra that less is better with alcohol,” Alberhasky said. “We know that there is a herd mentality in college, and kids will do almost anything for acceptance.”

Did the jounalist confuse/combine Everclear and Bicardi 151? The article says Everclear is 190 proof which is correct, but calls it Everclear 151.
Why are people so dumb?

Everclear 190 is already banned. They are trying to ban Everclear 151 as well.

Some states don't allow the sale of 190 proof Everclear...
so they made a lower proof version of it.
Washington State was one of the States that wouldn't allow the sale of the 190 proof stuff...
I noticed the lower version of Everclear in the Liquor Store last week, but I can't remember the proof of it....
I think it was 151.
I'll go look today and post an update.

jeez they shouldnt ban the everclear, just the freakin hazing. It seems stupid to me to ban something just bc some people mess up, then we would have to ban all alcohol bc there a ton of addicts and drunks out there. The mistakes of a few, shouldnt affect the whole. let them be in trouble for hazing. good grief.

They just have to ban death.
Then make little bylaws that make a homeowner liable and subject to heavy fines if someone dies on their property.
Pretty soon, people will be dragging their old or sick relatives out into the woods to die.

I doubt most of the people on this forum are annoyed with this because they were drinking the stuff. It's often used for extractions.
Not to mention that the principle of banning something for everyone because of one person's stupidity is ridiculous.

Rooster--got some brewing right now :p. Thank god the Rocky Mountain West is still hardcore lib and I can get 190 Everclear at liquor stores here.
Overall, this story just makes me sad: college kids die from drinking too much every year, I don't think every single one of them were drinking everclear (or a 151 proof vodka, for that matter).

Ok, good on the old liquor-store-owning coot. But notice what the journalist gets away with saying (in between the commas)? 151 proof IS NOT DOUBLE 80 PROOF. It's damn close, sure. 190 proof is a lot more than double 80 proof. There's also vodka that, to quote this fucktard, "contains twice as much alcohol as standard vodka."

When I was way younger , in high school some one gave me a double shot of everclear 190 telling me it was vodka . My throat closed up and was instantly drunk . followed by the puking for about 3 hours that shit is horrid .

i drink everclear quite a bit. if you arent retarded and mix it right with something it isnt as bad as drinking, say, vodka. and its pretty cheap for how much alcohol you get.

I think this ban completely misses the main issue. I can say from experience that this university has had, for the entire time I've been here, a policy towards the greek system that is far, far too permissive of hazing. There are multiple fraternities here that conduct open hazing rituals on campus and many professors and administrators were content to look the other way. Suddenly the reputation of the school is at risk, and the only reasonable action being taken is by the Phi Delta Theta international office, which removed Iowa Delta's charter for 4 years. It's depressing that now the reaction from the public has been one to try to ban the substance, rather than remedy the toxic drinking culture created in colleges by the fraternity system.
