Just a simple game to liven things up (if its allowed). Basically I was driving along the other day and found myself drifting across lanes whilst trying to look for mushrooms in the middle of the roundabout  haha ..... then i realized..... how addicted i am and how much i enjoy hunting 
So to start.....
You know your an ADDICT when .... your looking for mushrooms on a roundabout whilst driving round it

As far as the driving distraction goes; I have never met a devoted mushroom hunter who has not admitted to having to train themselves NOT to look for mushrooms while driving, after drifting into other lanes, driving against curbs, getting honked at by other drivers, etc..
Same with walking. I have definitely walked into trees, buildings, other people, you name it. I also fall over ledges, and trip on big stuff directly in front of me, because I will be looking directly at the ground beside me.
There are definitely some more I'm sure I will think of later.

I had three dreams about mushroom hunting prior to the season starting and once at the end of the season when I wasn't satisfied with the amount I was finding. The last dream was by far the most vivid and rewarding.

Anyway You know you're addicted when.....
- You're 2 hours away from home and it's getting dark, when you finally find a patch...Instead of continuing to hitch-hike you build a "Lean-to" and end up getting frost bite but still pick all morning
- Every time your "Girlfriend" suggests a trip you devise a reason why you it would be more enjoyable if you went to see a certain place (Knowing damn well in your own mind that Mushrooms grow there)
- While you're having a great day hunting you're already planning how to get a sick day off work the next!
- Even after drinking all night and partying with old friends you awake at 6am (2 hours after you passed out) and head to your favorite field.
- While hooked up to an oxygen mask in hospital you arrange to have your friends break you out because they found the first patch of the season!
- You find some "perfect" Libs at a camp and seriously debate quitting your job an living in the woods!
- Knowing that the Cop Station lawn is the best Lib Location ever but is monitored by cameras... You get a mask and wear all black just to do a late night "Grab and go"
- You devise a night picking system involving attaching a flashlight to one hand and crawling around under a dark blanket, also known as Jawa Style! (Thanks Whoever!)
- As a child, you tie your sheets together and do a "jailbreak" from the 3rd floor of your granma's house just so you can hunt!

-when u make excuses to g places even though the true reason is becuase u want to find mushrooms
-when u visit your parents and ur mom and u go to the store and she asks if u wanna stay in the car or come in, and u stay in the car becuase u spotted a mushroom on the woodchips out your window
-when you get excited and then relize its just a stupid leaf
-when u ditch a party to just go hunting
-when u have spent over 24 hours researching onthe computer and your text books
-when u are hunting and you costantly say a name of a mushroom to the point that you wanna kill yourself because u cant stop saying it in your head

Yes. It is usually some random species that I can't even really remember ever finding or seeing in real life. I do not let it bother me though, instead I often spend mushroom hunts alone working on fluent pronunciation of certain genera or species, and wonder if I am applying the correct rules of pronunciation.

Yes. It is usually some random species that I can't even really remember ever finding or seeing in real life. Hmm.. I forget how I pronounce it in that video. I usually say "Ploo-tay-us", though I regularly hear it referred to as "Ploo-tee-us", and I can't really argue one way or the other.
My friend who recently moved to France was telling me how they pronounce things totally different, and the examples cracked me up. I think for Clitocybe it was "Clee-toe-seeb", rather than "Cleye-toss-uh-bee", hahaha.
I don't usually add syllables or letters to names when I pronounce them, I have a pretty good memory for how the names are spelled, I just fuck up on pronouncing them some times. Luckily, it doesn't matter.

You find some food in the back of the fridge covered in fungus. Instead of wrinkling up your nose and carrying it at arms length to the trash, you either:
A. Immediately identify the genus and species, or
B. Not recognize it. Think to yourself, "Hmm.. I've never seen this one before." Wonder to yourself if this is edible, active, or poisonous. Take near-professional pictures using proper lighting techniques and "macro mode" on your camera. Carefully place it back in the fridge for safe keeping while you wait out your ID request on the Shroomery.

I love this thread! This is my first season hunting, and I can already tell I have a problem. Here's a couple more I don't think were mentioned
...you spend hours on Google Maps looking for any park or green patch on the map you can potentially hunt at, then spend several hours more driving to each and every suspect spot.
...you spend an extra 200 dollars on gas in a month from driving to all the spots that looked promising on Google Maps
Oh yes, and what has been mentioned many times already...you look for mushrooms while driving, or even just wood chip beds, in the dark, when its raining so hard your windshield wipers can hardly keep the windshield clear.
...whenever your not thinking about new places you can hunt at, your trying to come up with ways of possibly growing in your cramped 1br basement suite, or at the very least somewhere to make an outdoor bed.
I blame all of you for this. And I thank you as well

- While watching the History channel your girlfriend makes a remark about how she'd love to visit Ireland, when you say "Me too" she rolls her eyes and says "Let me guess, you want to hunt there?"
- Your internet isn't working and it keeps you up all night because you can't stop thinking about what's been posted in this thread!
- When you could probably sit here adding these all day and still have more!

lol... My Boston Terrier is pretty good at it, he naturally stops and investigates anything on the ground that catches his eye, so big patches often draw him in for a sniff!... My English Bulldog on the other hand... He perhaps is a special case... He's devoured just about every mushroom he's ever seen, before I could even stop him (My girlfriend swears this need to feed comes from me but I dunno) trying to walk him while hunting is just about an impossible task!... I have to tie him to a tree so that he doesn't trample my patches or consume them before me!
You know you're addicted when...
- You suggest taking the dogs for a walk and your girlfriend responds "so do you mean we're actually going to run them?..or you're going to tie them to a tree while you hunt?" (I always feel bad so they do get a good run... after I've lost the daylight lol)

i remember once when i was in the car (not driving) i asked my brother to have a mushroom spotting competition with me. he politely declined. i remember yelling out mushroom names... "YES! coprinus comatus! species number 7!" i lost count of the amount of times i was called a loser during that car ride.
i was so pumped when i got to 10 species. that was my goal.

Herb's right, my definition of a Shroomer is something along the lines of a "loser drug abuser" who consumes hallucinogenic mushrooms, (can't be considered a shroomer if you don't use mushrooms)
It's a crowd I have never been a part of and never want to be a part of. Although I have met a few people from this site (at other mushroom events, a couple of whom don't know it...) and to get real life perspective on people sometimes changes things; But I will say that a majority of you, base on the post I read - are not people who I would want mushroom with... This forum puts my tolerance to the limit and then some and one of these days I'll probably get feed up with this site and move on... My addiction is identifying fungi and at the moment this is another outlet for it.
Also anybody that picks mushrooms should be considered a Mushroomer, not a Shroomer.

last time i checked it was called" THE SHROOMERY magic mushrooms demystified" if you intolerable straight edge "mushroomers" dont like "shroomers" why are you here? i dont get it. to sit here and diss people for their OWN CHOICES is completely ignorant and very closed minded.maybe you need to eat an ounce of liberties and lose your ego.
or maybe just simply be acceptive of others,which this world needs more of.

You can all etibem, i am a bit surprised by your response. i agree that there are some people using this site that cross a line of comfort that people can identify with, for everyone that is different, but to lump folks into one category or another based on a personal choice (and for some it is a very meaningful one), i don't feel is justifiable. there is a perplexing dichotomy to your statement considering your contributions here (not sure if you've actually id'd any actives, if not, i suppose you could argue that you have not contributed to something you don't believe in). regardless, i appreciate your knowledge as do many others here i am sure. and i for one have done things i would classify as 'loser-esque', but it's very easy to remember the negative and forget the positive, human nature i guess. sorry to comment off-topic, but you know you are an addict when...

First of all I should of left it alone after I made my "-You identify mushrooms for shroomers even though you can't stand them..." line, but I didn't and now that I'm in the middle of it rather then put my foot in my mouth and shut up I'll keep going.
What constitutes a "loser drug abuser"? I guess it would be anybody who is dependent or addicted to them, which I imagine (hope?) most of you are not so maybe this was a poor choice of words to use. So for a new definition to describe a Shroomers; hows One who partakes in the ingestion of hallucinogenic fungi for recreational purpose.

The Gary I know is not this one The one I know is closer to this one a great teacher, one who captivate an audience and one that you can learn something from just by being around him.

Absolutely not. Most of the better field mycologist are "amateurs" also, at least in the east they are not using shrooms.

I am well aware what this site is all about and for the most part I have identified your mushrooms and kept my mouth shut. Why am I here, because every once in a while I see some rare or unusual fungus that interest me, if I don't know it I'll try to find out more about it or somebody here may know some mushroom that I don't and I will learn from them. I am just on the Mushroom Hunting and Identification forum and I don't look at every thread, I skip all the Weilii - Habitat North GA - Various hunting info and the Cyans still going in vancouver, canada and similar threads.

I did say a majority, that's only 6 out of 10...
I think that I can make an argument that I haven't contributed to the identification of actives. I think that I have identified a couple of Gymnopilus but did not answer the "active" question, also I think have identified Amanita muscaria/amerimuscaria more because you are taking a bigger risk playing with amanitas; but I have left them alone lately, let someone else do it...

When I made the original reference to Shroomers it was referring to the "Hey, Maaaan" type. I do disagree that both groups are equally worthless. At least the group that isn't doing drugs aren't killing themselves (from drugs...)

After this I'll probably go back to to my three word responses (It's Armillaria gallica) and keep my mouth shut until the next thing sets me off, (this is my first big one in the three months that I've been posting)
I don't think that I will ever be accepting of drug users, I myself have never used any other the the occasional cup of coffee, a Tylenol every couple of months and that crap for Lyme disease (a downside of being a mushroomer now days)

Thats what happens to everyone. After awhile of hunting mushrooms, people get addicted to them and want to learn all about them. Quite a few people have turned from people who just wanted to get high into amateur mycologists that post pictures of tiny mushrooms on mushroomobserver. It happens to everyone who stays around long enough.

I like this argument. The normal progression of discussion is such that topics develop and change over its course. I bet if we were all agreeing and getting along, you would not call for an end to the conversation. People learn more from argument than if everyone agrees all the time. Plus it is boring as hell when everyone always agrees.

Noooo it does not. I don’t want to name names, but I really don’t think I have to. There are plenty of examples from this forum alone, of people who have been hunting actives for years, and never take an interest in anything else.

It's not up to you to judge anyone's reason for taking a drug. People have been getting high recreationally for as long as mankind exists. Even animals get high. It is a natural thing to do and unless the quest to get high becomes your main concern in life (these people's problems are deeper rooted. The drug itself is just the catalyst/promoter of their problems, not the actual reason) there is nothing wrong with it. People need to leave their everyday life behind every now and then. I work a 40 hour week - and very often more - in IT and it's intellectually challenging and often mentally exhausting. I need some form of compensation to not go nuts, you see. Sometimes I have a beer or two after work, sometimes I smoke some weed. And every other month I like to embark onto some deeper and more spiritual journey and I will ingest hallucinogenic mushrooms.
Does that make me a junkie? I don't think so. I am a well "functioning" part of society. I do my job well, I pay my taxes, I have a wife and two kids whom I love and whom I care for. I make good money and just bought a house. I am your average suburban John Doe, with the exception that I like to get high off things that nature has on offer every now and then. Personally I think that a lot more is wrong with total straight edgers than with people who get high for recreational reasons every now and then. It's absolutely natural. But it seems that nowadays it's only socially acceptable if you get high off what big pharma's got to offer.

thats how i feel about it to german kahuna,we are in a similiar boat.i have been working on the road for the last 4 years and this is the first mushroom season i have been around home in that many years. so i have ingested a few times this year with my wife and it is very enjoyable and a sensual experience. i dont see how that would make me a junkie or a loser. its really all about the hunt for me,thats what i am "addicted" to or you could say i enjoy the most. not getting high.
i have the opportunity to go hunt psilocybes right now but i am finding hunting and photographing other things to be just as rewarding. a good edible mushroom is what is driving me now a days. and identifying as many mushrooms as i can .
if you love mushrooms and i love mushrooms,this means we have something in common that we are passionate about. the fact i may eat a magic mushroom once in a while should be irrellevant and not worth verbaly attacking someone over it.
well obviously you are an experienced mushroom hunter and the more experience here the better. i dont like what you said but its your choice to be straight edge. i can't diss you for it because if its good for YOU its not wrong. whats good for ME is not wrong either though.

Exactly - a news story came out recently that indicated that the Netherlands (where cannabis is legal and regulated) has a lower rate of cannabis use than other European countries where cannabis is illegal.

If this country encouraged unabashed and honest dialogue about drug use, I think we'd see a lot more respect toward drug use and its consequences. Drug use will always be a Thing in society, but prohibition is what causes it to thrive.

Thats what happens to everyone. After awhile of hunting mushrooms, people get addicted to them and want to learn all about them. Totally! That is what has happened to me. Now i wish i had access to a microscope so i can spore print the mushrooms in my backyard and learn everything about them! I dont care if they are active, edible or poisonous. But on the flip side I really want to look at my actives spore prints.
Hell, it is getting to where i enjoy the hunt more than the consumption. I usually just give about 75% of my hauls away to friends and cousins. I dont know what to do with 100 ps. cyans! hahaha I enjoy tripping but not that much!

So it is not my place to pass judgment on peoples motives for doing things, but someone telling me they take a drug for any spiritual purpose, does not come off as a redeeming reason. Though I will usually pretend not to think it is bullshit, or at least ignore it.

Well, I certainly don't believe in gods or spirits, but I do feel a strongly increased connectedness with nature when I take mushrooms, which is what I am referring to when I speak of a "spiritual experience". It has nothing to do with fairies and goblins.

If this whole debate was read correctly by myself, it all comes down to the passing of judgment onto others. All this talk is relating of ones own reasoning and morality to another person or peoples. You get super excited when it rains even a little
You are often sick because you keep going out in the middle of the cold night/rain
You are blind as a bat and cannot drive without glasses but you can spot a mushroom 10ft away whilst from the passanger seat of a moving car doing 45(+)

I haven’t put much thought into this lately, been occupied with other things this past week (yes, all mushroom related) but I’ll address a few of the questions.

Well that sucks. But that is also what I expect. When I first integrate into any mycology society the good identifiers are usually dismissive and skeptical of me for a little while, but eventually my reason for being there becomes obvious and that initial druggie impression fades.

That was nice of him.
The biggest problems I find with bringing actives to meetings are: 1) that people who don't know you get the wrong impression, 2) Everyone remotely interested swarms you and wants you to tell them where to find them, and tries to get you to take them hunting for actives.
It is horribly frustrating to be flooded with these questions when you really just want to look at everything else on the table and start writing some labels for them...

That is understandable. I don't like hanging out with people who are high on hallucinogens if I am sober. It can be really boring and annoying, because you can not really communicate with them in any meaningful of productive way since they are experiencing everything so completely different.

- You check the weather forecast 5 times a day even though it's updated once.
- You've looked at every farm in the area on Google maps and know the layout of each one before you go there.
- You can make it through the thickest shrubs and vines if there is a farm on the other side.

Oh okay, then that was in March. I do not usually bring actives, or am more discrete with them for the reasons noted above, however, those ones were fruiting fairly well outside of their normal season, and in a weird habitat (Eucalyptus grove, no wood chips), so I wanted to surprise people with a late collection.
Also, that was not a big bag. It was a small bag.

It was January... And you have to remember I'm from New England; the only Psilocybe I see are a few caerulipes every once in a while. So a small bag for you is a considered a big bag here.

January? Huh... Oh I know, I got mixed up. In January I brought in that little bag, but by March There was only one left since it was the tail end of the season.
I didn't even display the P. cyanescens in January. I remember trying to hide them in that bag, but someone pestered me about what was in it. I displayed all of the other,\ mushrooms I found. Of course, as soon as I showed one person the actives, then they all wanted to see, and I think the bag ended up getting dumped onto the table.
That is probably why you got that impression. Those mushrooms draw a lot of attention.
And those occasional P. caerulipes are more likely P. ovoideocystidiata, which is far more common.

ovoideocystidiata isn't as common in New England as the mid-Atlantic states, I've only seen it once. Look at the NEMF list, caerulipes was found on quite a few of them.

Ahh, I stand corrected. I thought it was generally quite rare and that most reports of P. caerulipes were actually P. ovoideocystidiata that had been misidentified because no microscopy was done. That was of course, the case for all reports of P. caerulipes on Shroomery until the last couple years.

So we just had our annual after-Thanksgiving party. I happened to find some B. edulis that morning, and decided to fry them up for my friends (I had rehydrated some B. auripes in chicken stock in the fridge, but I just had to serve them the kings). Got some great material for this thread:
... you always make a wild mushroom dish for parties.
... you are immediately ready to accurately describe, in correct mycological language and great detail, the genus and species that you've prepared for everyone, including keys to identification, growth patterns, historical significance, international growth patterns, and cost.
... you make everyone nervous at the dinner table as they anxiously await someone else to be the first in the pool and try your wild mushrooms.
... people tell you, "You can get poisoned eating wild mushrooms."
... people tell you, "You should sell these to a gourmet restaurant."
... you educate doctors about Amatoxin poisoning patterns. You caution them NEVER to send a mushroom poisoning patient home--even if they "feel better the next day"--until you found out what mushroom they ate.
... you argue with your Polish friend about the species of Bolete that you've found. Bitch told me that I misidentified them! I told her twenty f*cking times that I'd confirmed the ID on the Internet (here at the Shroomery), they didn't ffing bruise blue and that the reticulation on the stipe didn't match her ID. She kept saying, "these are the kind that bruise blue, and the structure of the stipe doesn't matter"
LOL... all this from two medium-sized B. edulis. Lord in heaven, mushrooming makes for great party conversation.

You get exited after the slightest amount of rain and out of boredom decide to go hunting. You arrive at your favourite field to be confronted by 3 bulls. You run into the trees and hide, meanwhile 2 bulls are trying to get through the trees but one finds the trail you used. You leg it up further, then head down a Kangaroo trail. You wait 20 mins for them to leave. It then starts to rain, you stay hiding in semi bush to keep from the rain. When the rain stops, you finally get to start seeing what's there, only to realise there hasn't been enough rain. You head home empty handed after an exciting day of getting chased by bulls and seeing a funny lookin' Kangaroo.

You say fuck it and run out with your 2 friends and flashlights, hop over the gate and dart past the farmhouse and a bit down into the first part of the valley when you are confronted by at least 30+ cows all inhabiting the valley.

how about when you change your indoor potting soil that you have been using for almost 10 years to a new and MORE expensive brand because it contains many different mushroom mycorrhizae and you now have to have anything thats fungi related

Incredible thread, dicky! I just finished reading the entire thing. It took over an hour. I can relate to 90+% of the posts. As I read I tried to come up with a topper. Here it is:
...you plan your once in a lifetime trip to Europe and include Stonehenge, not for the stones but for the mushrooms that might grow there.
You go to Stonehenge and spend more time looking at the grass for mushrooms than looking at the stones.
Two other comments:
1. Incredible replies from everyone. I read every single one and liked all of them. My favorite was hard to pick but I did come up with one. Whoever's long list was my favorite.
2. I most identified with CureCat's line.

You guys really have ot get over your fear of cows. Bulls attack sometimes if they are wild and untamed but cows do not attack unless you trip over their calves.

I am always disappointed if I don't find mushrooms. That time doubly so. I will always suspect someone was there before me. In fact, since then I have heard of them being picked there. At the time no such information was available online.

Well then, learn to hunt mycelium! I found that some good Agaricus subrufescens grow in the leafe litter under Bamboo around here, so I went around grabbing up leave litter and looking for mycelium in all the bamboo groves I visit to see if I can fdind some, and by smell I was able to ID 3 species of the many I encounter that way, so if I do not fill my basket I still fill my head with new mushroom spote, and yes I found a few Agaricus subrufescens patches that way and went back and eventually found the mushrooms themselves, also transplanting the mycelium into mixed compost on a day where I did not find any mushrooms I now have a pinning mushroom patch in my own yard wich is even bettre than having found the mushrooms themselves!

- When you worked a 24 hour shift on Sun. and instead of driving home on Monday morning you drive miles in the opposite direction to hunt for new mushroom species to identify.
- Overcome by curiosity you eat some dried cubes not realizing 25 grams is far too much only to spend the next 3-4 hours writhing on the floor completely convinced your a lizard.
-Your once strong dislike for the taste of mushrooms does a complete 180 when you become addicted to hunting them in all their forms. You order mushrooms on everything you can whereas before you hated the taste of them.

Haha, I can relate to this one. Not in the sense that I hated mushrooms in the first place on food, but now that I am all in to hunting and identification I do order them on everything possible.

When you go mushroom hunting and find some nice Chanterelles, but neither you nor your hunting partners care much about edibles, so you just leave the Chanterelles there.

My friend carries it around with him because he really likes identifying Cortinarius and a lot of species have a colour changing reaction when you apply KOH to the tissue, so it is a useful identifying characteristic.

Google says nothing - and I had a awesome talk with a Darrington/rockport bluegrass yokel who told me a story of mushroom use in the local longhouses - and that's how they danced so well! But the missionaries ( on their quest from jebus ) stamped out that tradition...
I ate one yesterday to remember the dance.

I disagree. The less reasons a law enforcement agency has to look at a site like this, the better for all of us. Who is Jebus...
Yes the church stamped out the tradition of using active mushrooms to get closer to God because they thought the mushrooms were taking the place of God, but many cultures combined the use of active mushrooms with Jesus/God.
The reason for this, they didn't want anyone to have a true spiritual experience with God, they wanted all the control (church) but nothing in the Bible says a Christian has to go to church.
Some of Maria sabina's writings on this are incredible.

i have never heard of natives at least in BC using magics. there were no cow fields and mulch beds between say 200 years ago and 9000 BC. i would say they were very rare back then in the PNW. its not like say somewhere like india where cubes are popping outa elephant shit.
natives here didnt do any of the great things other cultures are reknowned for like pyramid building or written language.yes they were one with the earth which is cool as hell but that doesnt mean they ate magics. maybe it was the fact they didnt eat magics that kept them in basicly a stone age hunter gatherer lifestyle.
if they did then ya i gaurantee the church would have stomped it out.

I had more dreams about picking mushrooms last night. They are always my favorite dreams.
I found some Gymnopilus, what resembled junonius except the caps were particularly fuzzy, and also what I first mistook for Amanita Muscaria, but I now believe is just an imaginary mushroom that has no resemblance to any true species.

- You read this thread from start to finish in one sitting.
- You have started to think of slugs as your arch nemisis for chomping the tops off all the mushrooms.
- You take a swag hiking with you incase you get carried away hunting and need to stay the night.

...when the first thread you read is years old, and then someone mentions a mushroom hunter video game that could be part adventure, part hunting education. you could choose from a number of different locations, in urban/rural environments, model habitats and have actual photographs/descriptions, you could use gis topography files for modelling the actual locations. the player could get detailed information regarding weather, maybe even be able to flash forward through waiting periods i.e. no rain, etc.) the goal of the game could be to advance through skillfull harvests while balancing the delicate work/play relationship between edibles/actives (you could do some crazy animation relating to pov, you could have different cameras, pov, other peoples pov). you could add microscopy and nomenclature challenges for the hardcore. maybe more of a plug-in to Second Life or other...
