The Bullpen Thread for wannabe weekly debaters
    #11428683 - 11/10/09 07:13 PM (2 years, 6 months ago)

Throw down the gauntlet. State your topic and what side of the argument you intend to take. One line only.

As soon as someone agrees to the opposite side; you two will be our first weekly gladiators.

Example:

Poster 1: I believe in a soul.
Poster 2: I don't believe in a soul.

You're on.

Simple.

The debate thread will be a sticky and intruders will be warned and their posts deleted.

By popular request, feel free to suggest multiple topics for debate. But please, no general discussion. That's what

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11411637#11411637

is for. Let's keep this one clutter free.

Premise: Other than placebo, there is no direct effect from homeopathic 'medicines'.

Topic2: Astrology

Premise: Not only is astrology based upon nothing substantive, but it has no predictive power nor any degree of accuracy in assessing individuals.

Topic 1: Belief

Premise: Any idea that is thought to be true without experiencing proof, first hand, is little more than an idea one believes to be true.

Topic 2: Space and Voids

Premise: The theory of places that exist within the universe that are completely void of matter is no more fact than assumption.

All concepts are related to the phenomena they represent. All phenomena are causal and conditioned. There is no other reality for phenomena then co-dependent origination. Therefore, all concepts are about this co-dependent origination, be that God, Consciousness, Awareness, Self, etc...
At first sight they seem to be addressing different phenomena. Yet, on closer inspection, they point out the way phenomena really exist. This interdependences is the only reality there is.

Not all concepts are related to reality. Concepts such as God, Fairies, Infinity, etc are floating abstractions that do not relate to any concretes in reality. Reality being that which exists and to exist is to be something as distinguished from the nothing of non-existence. For something to exist it must have a specific nature and attributes that can be distinguished. A concept is an abstraction from observed characteristics of the attributes of concrete existents. For a concept to be valid it must relate to actual concretes in existence.

Concrete and abstract realities exist in exactly the same way. Their conceptualisation doesn't make them less or more real/unreal. They share the same properties; they have characteristics unique to themselves, they have causes and depend upon conditions, and they are neither nothing nor are they eternal.
When we name entities, we place labels and organise phenomena according to logic and reasoning, this includes abstract conceptualising, whether they are 'real' or 'unreal' doesn't change the process of identifying the way they exist/not exist, and that is always 'interdependence' and 'co-productive origination', and is eventually what we are all talking about.

Second try to make this thread for debate. If you missed it go back to the OP and Diploid's posts.

If you're not here to start a debate or to directly respond to a debate topic then stay out. If the thread continues to devolve then I don't see the point in having debate threads or debate stickies...

Concretes and abstractions do not exist in the same way in reality. Abstractions do not have concrete existence as they are merely concepts in the mind used to refer to concretes and group them together by observable attributes (abstraction). A concept is an idea in the mind that has no actual concrete substance - it is merely tool of cognition. Concretes on the other hand are actual existents in reality.

You cannot 'identify' that which does not exist, that would be a contradiction. Only existence presupposes identity therefore only things that exist can be identified and properly abstracted from to form a valid concept.

I agree that entities can be called 'real' or 'unreal' dependent upon them being represented by a concrete example.

However, fairies and doctors can be described in the same manner. They may or may not be represented concretely in reality, yet to the mind, they 'exist' in the same way.

All entities, real or not, are collections of characteristics bound by causes and conditions. That's what i mean when i state that all entities are the same thing... perhaps a bit poorly stated. (if you leave it at that then i'm glad to have debated with you and pass the glove on to someone else :undecided:, time for fresh blood)

Only to a delusional or misinformed mind would fairies be thought to 'exist' at all.

Only real entities have collections of attributes bound by cause and effect. Unreal ones by definition do not exist.

The thread is not for general discussion or commenting on others' posts.

Topic?

Human nature, in its simplest form, is good. (Good being: consistently promotes proliferation and relative joy in others) and that bad actions can be regarded as genetic flaws...

OR

Some humans are born good, and others are just fundamentally bad.

I couldn't argue for either very passionately, as I'm still torn. I'd love to hear some sides, though.

Alright folks, I had a feeling this crowd is to undisciplined to make this work. Out of some 50 posts, over 30 are off topic and there's no debating taking place.

I'm going to lock this, start a new one and limit it to a SINGLE topic which I'll pick because you all need structure. This thread makes it painfully obvious that many of you can't be counted on to follow the rules on your own.

The first two people to post on topic (read: participating in the debate) will be the only two allowed to post until the debate is over. I'll start a parallel thread for general discussion and comments about the debate.

Hopefully this rigid structure will work better.

Wanna hear something depressing? One out of four Shroomerites wants to lock me in a government cage for using a substance they don't like.

Hard to believe, right? Read it for yourself:
