Most Interesting Mushrooms in the World
#11428293 - 11/10/09 06:11 PM (2 years, 3 months ago) |

Please excuse me if this is posted in the wrong forum, though I do feel that it pertains to mushroom science sufficiently.
I have been studying mushrooms as a hobby for a few years, and last year took a lecture course at university in which I learned a great deal about many of the ways in which we interact with mushrooms and molds during the course of our everyday lives. We grew mushrooms and I really enjoyed the class.
I ended up getting a research fellowship to study with the professor, and have worked in his lab ever since. This semester I'll be serving as the TA for this class.
Once of the TA's duties is to present a "fungus of the day" at the beginning of lecture. Here's where you come in. I already have a bit of a list going, but what unique, interesting fungi do you think deserve a little attention?

Any fungi from the Phallaceae family!!!!
While I was mushroom hunting one day and I came across these tiny patch of bell-type mold or fungus, I believe it was a fungus because it just seemed to have no plant like qualities and it looked like it was past it's prime because it looked like it was dying. The just had like bell like caps and I am not sure if they had anything inside the bell thing. I think I saw a picture of it once i'll try to find it.

I have a particular fondness for Helvella lacunosa...the Elfin Saddles...I love the shape of the stipe...Some mature ones look like the stipe spins the whole way up with little holes and knots in them...Kinda like a Tim Burton tree or something from the nasty part of Middle Earth

Cordyceps. Cordyceps unilateralis infects the nervous system of ants, causing them to act erratically, eventually climbing a blade of grass and dying, where the fruiting body of Cordyceps grows out of the ant's head. This is highly spreadable, so many ants recognize this behavior and forcibly exile the affected colony member. It is an ascomycete.
Many cordyceps species are also highly valuable and medicinal.

Cordyceps unilateralis affects pheromone perception in ants, if I recall correctly. It literally affects the ant's sense of direction and position. Humans are neurologically very complex organisms and would not very simple to affect imo.

I really don't like Geomyces destructans! It has decimated bat populations around near me.
As for interesting mushrooms I'll toss Xylaria polymorpha "Dead man's fingers" into the pot.

All secotioid forms of fungi are very interesting, especially the study of the methods of spore dispersal. For example, Weraroa novae-zelandiae, not only is it a secotioid mushroom but it contains Psilocin, Psilocybin and probably Baeocystin and Norbaeocystin also. I suspect the main means of spore dispersal utilized by this mushroom to be native New Zealand slugs and snails!

Have you maybe considered bioluminescent shrooms. there are several species out there that "glow" in the dark... I did pretty much the same thing you are doing, in college, and I always got a bunch of ohs and awws when the lights went out and you could see glowing buddies. If you have the lab equip, they are by far some of the best to grow/show...

Psilocybe semiinconspicua is only known from one locality, thus rarer in a sense.

Nice one Feelers
It's Ileodictyon cibarium, a type of stinkhorn, the basket becomes free from the substrate and blows along the ground in the wind dispersing the spores, it is quite common in mulched woodchip gardens.

I've been wanting to see pictures of Psathyrella aquatica since I read about it on Galileo. I unfortunately didn't have access to the article. I think it was in Mycologia. Thanks for the epic win.

its from oregon. you can find mushrooms anywhere there. this proves it . underwater fruiters are a new one for me.
cordyceps keep a balance for mother nature. maybe fungus are the true regulating force for mother nature. what if the human race grows beyond what she thinks is healthy for the world. MASS FUNGICIDE! hopefully its humane and tripy like ergot.

underwater fruiters are new for everyone. nobody has ever discovered any other underwater gilled mushroom, according to the article from southern oregon university.
i wonder if people are trying to grow that thing in labs or in other waters now. it makes me want to try to grow it in my pond, even though i know it wouldnt work

It'd be amazing to learn the mechanics of that mushroom.
Perhaps even as far as having it planted in an advanced aquarium indoors. That'd be, beyond wild.

Squamanita paradoxa or (powdercap strangler)
an extremely rare fungus. It is a parasitic fungus that grows from another mushroom, the common widespread Cystoderma amianthinum. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cystoderma_amianthinum The "wellingtons" at the base are in fact remnants of the host.

Carnivorous Mushrooms http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnivorous_fungus "fungi that derive some or most of their nutrients from trapping and digesting microscopic or other minute animals.[1] More than 200 species have been described, belonging to the phyla Ascomycota, Mucoromycotina, and Basidiomycota. They usually live in soil and many species trap or stun nematodes (nematophagous fungus), while others attack amoebae or collembola."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nematophagous_fungus Its mycelia can kill and digest nematodes, which is believed to be a way in which the mushroom obtains nitrogen.

most common Nematophagous mushroom species is oysters http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oyster_mushroom
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coprinus_comatus shaggy ink cap

"a recent study has found the shaggy ink cap kills nematode species Panagrellus redivivus and Meloidogyne arenaria"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stropharia_rugosoannulata wine cap stropharia

"A 2006 study, published in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology, found the king stropharia to have the ability to attack the nematode Panagrellus redivivus; the fungus produces unique spiny cells called acanthocytes which are able to immobilise and digest the nematodes"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prototaxites
"The genus Prototaxites describes terrestrial organisms known only from fossils dating from the Silu-Devonian, approximately 420 to 370 million years ago. Prototaxites formed large trunk-like structures up to 1 metre (3 ft) wide, reaching 8 metres (26 ft) in height."
"In 2007, isotopic analyses by a team including Hueber and Kevin Boyce of the University of Chicago[1] concluded that Prototaxites was a giant fungus."

so now the question is, did all life on this planet come from fungi?

There is also a conspiracy theory to the white nose bat syndrome. That Monstanto designed it and sprayed a few chemtrail planes over the area, designed it to effect only bats specifically. So that the mosquito population will rise and therefore disease will spread much faster.
I dont' necissarily say this is true but it is totally a possibility seeing as how Monsanto is the one of the most evil corporations on the planet.
I know they or someone already engineered this stuff to affect marijuana plants called white mold. That is just what some ppl told me that know growers. That it was specifically designed to attack and kill marijuana plants, 2 summers ago we had black/brownish spots on all the leaves on the trees in this area.
when i discussed it with a very informed person on marijuana cultivations, he said yes they believed the spots on the leaves on normal trees were actually a side effect caused by the spraying of this white mold to affect marijuana.
so the white nose bat fungi problem may be the most interesting fungus currently, i'd love to hear what Paul Stamets would have to say on this conspiracy theory. I'm sure he wouldn't say much in a conference because he works with the government sometimes but he may be able to find out where it comes from.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_nose_syndrome

poor little bats, this makes me sad, i love bats. they kill mosquitos which we all hate.
"Bats are one of nature's most efficient and eco-friendly methods of keeping mosquito populations under control. Just one bat can eat more than 1,000 mosquitoes in an hour"
white nose bat syndrome has killed over a million bats since 2006. "An informational video, produced by Mark Spaulding of Howe Caverns, about the effects of White Nose Bat Syndrome."
I really hope someone figures out how to save the bats soon before we are overrun by mosquitos.

These are so cool! The mycelium network would have to be enormous for something that big to grow.

Great thread, some very interesting species have been mentioned.
That's very sad to hear about those bats being killed off by Geomyces destructans. It reminds me of the facial tumour disease that Tasmanian devils (Sarcophilus harrisii) are being threatened with here in Australia at the moment. It is also quite similar to sarcoptic mange, which is becoming a growing problem for southern hairy nosed wombats (Lasiorhinus latifrons), which are already endangered, and also common wombats (Vombatus ursinus). Sarcoptic mange is spread by mites (Sarcoptes scabiei), the same mite species that causes scabies in humans.

No, there's not a shred of evidence to suggest that.
