Small puffball(?) growing on wood in WI and bonus Cordyceps
    #11386416 - 11/04/09 06:30 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I have been seeing these all over rotting logs in southern WI the last few days, and when I squeeze them they shoot out purplish spore all over. Anyone know what they are?

Also thought some of you might find this interesting, found this Cordyceps today that are parasitic on species of Elaphomyces buried just below the surface.

Thanks.

Your puffball is Lycoperdon epidendrum.

Awesome Cordyceps!

Did you get more pics of it?  And the truffle it was growing on?

Cool Cordyceps! Were they growing under oak? Did you dig up the host? I found one of these this year but failed to recognize it until I got home.

Thanks Alan, I thought it was a puffball but it wasn't keying out in for me, I guess I know why now, Lycoperdon epidendrum is not in Mushroom's Demystified.

Being a noob, I didn't realize what it was until I got home, I might go back out tomorrow to get better photos, yeah there were a lot of oaks around.

Thanks everyone.
