Whats your favourite Sci-Fi movie ?
#11381674 - 11/04/09 03:24 AM (2 years, 3 months ago) |
|

For me 'Aliens' is probably one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever. I'm here at uni and I got kinda frustrated with all that revising and shit. So I decided to turn to the shroomery cause if its immense wisdom and ask for a recommendation. I prefer stuff from the 80s and early 90s cause in my opinion most of the contemporary crap is not worth even downloading.. Thanx)

really tough question. i love a lot of sci-fi movies for completely different reasons.
2001 is just a fucking masterpiece. however, it's the sort of film that i only like to watch once or twice a year.
bladerunner is epic, even with 80s glam shining through some of the characters.
i'm a firefly fanboy, so of course i love serenity.
the first matrix will always hold a special place in my heart. i like to pretend the 2nd and 3rd never happened. the first was pretty fucking badass though.

Star Trek is sci-fi. The "universe" in it is our own in the future, not an alternate one as in say Star Wars.

Depends if you want your horror concrete or more psychological If the latter then the second two. If the former then the first two.

most times i will agree with you but there are a few exceptions that come to mind. you HAVE to see Sunshine, Moon, and 12 Monkeys if youve not already. they are fantastic modern scifi movies.
other than that i tend to like more of the 50s-60s scifi: The Time Machine <-- 1960 Planet of the Apes <-- 1968 Forbidden Planet <-- 1956 Logans Run <-- 1976 Journey to the Center of the Earth <-- 1959 Fantastic Voyage <-- 1966 The Day The Earth Stood Still <-- 1951 Marooned <-- 1969 Total Recall <-- 1990 Lifeforce <-- 1985 - who knew i would enjoy a movie about "space vampires" as much as i did Gattaca <-- 1997 Primer <-- 2004 Dark City <-- 1998

Is Donnie Darko sic-fi?

You could easily argue for both.

Not really, its not based on any theory in physics or science. It is full of 'fantasy', but all movies have fantasy in them - that doesnt mean they are all in the fantasy genre.
I think you would be hard pressed to find any sci-fi movie that didnt have fantasy in it, still they are considered 'sci-fi' and not 'fantasy' movies.
My vote goes to star wars.

Event Horizon takes the cake on that one. Also Sunshine was very good and had a similar vibe to Event Horizon.

I am a huge fan of Vanilla Sky. More of a drama with sci-fi and (very mild) thrilling elements. However I may be the only one on earth who actually likes this movie.

just because no one has said it: eXistenZ
its not really amazing sober, but i would imagine it would fuck your brain pretty bad on a dissociative.
"Allegra Geller (Jennifer Jason Leigh), the greatest game designer in the world, is testing her latest virtual reality game, eXistenZ, with a focus group in a large hall. The game is fully immersive; to play, players must plug a 'pod', a bio-organic gaming device, into a 'bio-port' near the bottom of the spine...
...The results lead the pair on a strange adventure where it becomes impossible to tell whether their actions are their own or the will of the game, and whether they are in the game or the real world."
big bump for contact.

Good; strange, but good.
also i havnt seen it but the story that ive heard from Pandora sounds pretty interesting. District 9 was intriguing just cause it didnt follow typical molds, i think a sequel would be better.
Anyone seen Kaena:The Prophecy? interesting french cg movie, lots of reviews mention a thin plot but i dont remember that stickin out too bad back when i watched it.
I havnt seen Brazil, guess i need to check that out.
