Getting in shape
    #11368866 - 11/02/09 11:30 AM (2 years, 6 months ago)

Anyone interested?

Join us, set your goals, make a commitment and tell us how it goes over time. You can also ask for advice, or give some yourself.
Getting in shape is not limited to the body, it concerns every improvement you want to make in your lifestyle!

Shroomerites participating:

Monday:            rest
Tuesday:          exercice + stretching
Wednesday:    jujitsu + stretching
Thursday:        exercice + stretching
Friday:              jujitsu + stretching
Saturday:        rest
Sunday:          exercice + stretching

The exercices are hard to describe. It's a method using body weight to perform over a hundred exercices, many variations of pushups, crunches, dips, etc. Exercices last 1 hour.
Stretching is general and takes from 20 minutes to 40 in total. I've also been considering working on my diaphragm, to gain control of my breath.
Jujitsu trainings last 1h30, which would be the duration of a session of exercices + stretching.

Aside from that, I'll be eating healthy and getting my share of sleep everyday. I already started that. Sleeping early is only hard because of my habits and one friend who has sleeping problems and with who I talk a lot... eating healthy is not that much of an issue unless I have nothing to do.

I'm also studying cinema and art, so I plan on visiting museums and such (I live in the parisian suburbs). I'll also try to work at least every two days to keep my grades up and my knowledge consistent.

My goal isn't really to lose weight or build muscle (although that'd be nice), just up my stamina and energy levels. "

"I'm thinking my goals will be focussed on strength and conditioning.

35 Burpees successively (I'm at about 15 right now)
175 pound Bench Press (I'm benching 140 right now)

I'd say that's good right now, gives me tons to work towards, once my strength is sufficient I'll move over to more bodily control goals, balance, handstands, more parkour/jungle gym sorta stuff. I want my strength to be functional, fuck those meatheads that walk around with huge muscles that they don't use except in the gym and to intimidate people. I want to be an athletic, speedy, ninja mother fucker with dense muscles, not big ones."

"Trying to wake up earlier, meditate and stretch every day. I've been making it a point to buy fresh fruits, veggies and meats as well as whole wheat bread.

A really good diet suppliment is the Apple Cider Vinegar Drink.I've been making a drink of this twice a day, and lately I've felt great! Acne's cleared up, I have more energy right as soon as I get up, less appetite, etc. It tastes terrible, but is actually pretty good with some lemon juice squirted in, and the shit's cheap as hell."

"I've reduced my blazing to twice a week, and no more than six alcoholic beverages a week (spread out, not at once, equivalent of a double crown and coke, or a beer). I've also been waking up promptly at 7 every day. It really helps to stretch my limbs a bit before I even get out of bed, makes me alot less groggy, then a quick cold shower and I'm off and running.

It really really feels good to be getting healthy, I'm thinking clearer, have more control of my limbs, am generally more aware of energy movement around me. Meditating really helps."

My Goal:
-To continue utilizing Kettlebells and some bodyweight exercises to increase my general level of strength, cardiovascular fitness, and physique.
-Once I finish the 16kg ROP, I'll bump up to the 16kg VO2max, then 24kg PM, 24kg ROP, 24kg V02, and so on. (I know these are kettlebell-specific terminology, but it'll help me when I come back and reference/update later on).

Sunday: Off/Long slow jog

Hoping to gain weight ironically...5 pounds.

PDU

My goals:
Immediate:

-To get to the right of passage (ROP) by or before January. Training/practicing 5 days per week.
-To strengthen my left knee and get it ready for running.
-I would like to get more active aside from workouts, but "we'll see" if i can find the time/willpower/resources to accomplish this

Longterm:

-I want to run a half marathon in the early spring, and a full hopefully by next fall.
-I would like to gain 10lbs-15lbs, increase my flexibility and gain muscle density.
-I want to be strong in injury free and use this as a base to get into some more adventurous outdoor sports.

Sure, I'm in.  I'm average build/even slim, just totally out of shape.  Ideally, I'd exercise once a day and start doing yoga, but I really don't have much time for it in college, plus I've been lazy.

So what are you guys planning to do?

I'll personnaly start using the Lafay method, which seems pretty convenient in regards of time and material. Also, some stretching, and I'll be back to healthier food habits (less fat, more veggies, low-fat meat).

I think I'll try to start tomorrow.

I'm definitely in! I've got a workout routine in the process, trying to wake up earlier, meditate and stretch every day.

It tastes terrible, but is actually pretty good with some lemon juice squirted in, and the shit's cheap as hell.

I've been sort of off and on with the workout routine, but as the weather is getting shittier I need a way to get rid of excess energy or I'll go insane (I'm usually REALLY active during the summer months), so I'm making a serious commitment, rather than just smoking more weed during the winter like I usually do.

I've reduced my blazing to twice a week, and no more than six alcoholic beverages a week (spread out, not at once, equivalent of a double crown and coke, or a beer).

Meditating really helps.

I am so down for this thread, I need something to keep me dedicated

Somnivore, you mean you're going to do the P90x method, or is that an advice?

How do you want this thread to work?
I thought about making a list of the participating people. Everyone should have also some form of committment, and should tell the rest of us how it goes, without leaving failures or weaknesses aside!

I personnally didn't start my workout session today, too much to do, I was done too late, and exercising before bed is no good IMO. But I'll be back home at 1pm tomorrow, that should work. I'll make a schedule tomorrow too, already took measures today (like weight, torso, shoulders, waist and such).

Good idea on the measurements. I didn't really work out either. I did wrench on my jeep, manage to get a few scrapes and bumps and also a blood blister or two. Then I went on a hike and searched for some oysters and others for an hour and a half in the woods. The night is not over yet, I should do some chin ups as well.

Re: Anyone interested [Re: Simms]

We should outline our individual goals first of all, like weight loss, mass gain, certain strength or endurance goals, etc.

I'm thinking my goals will be focussed on strength and conditioning.

I want to be an athletic, speedy, ninja mother fucker with dense muscles, not big ones.

Here's a really helpful post over on the RossTraining forum boards that'll help people define their goals and how to achieve them, at least as far as strength training anyways:

Quote:

DIFFERENT KINDS OF HYPERTROPHY

Hypertrophy: guys, i wrote this in responce to a question on the think muscle board... i thought it might be of interest to some of you here. if not, well no harm done i guess. there are basically 3 trainable factors involved in size and strength. sarcoplasmic hypertrophy... does not directly increase strength but can effect it by increasing tendon angle at the attachment. but of course increases size. sarcomere hypertrophy... increases contractile proteins in muscle thereby increasing strength directly and also size. neural effeciency... increase in the percentage of motor units that can be activated at any given time. no effect on size but increases strength. the training for each quality exists on sort of a continuim. training for sarcoplasmic hypertrophy is high volume and low intensity... like 10 sets of 10 for a muscle. training for sarcomere hypertrophy is med intensity and med volume... like 5 sets of 5 for a muscle. training for increased neural effeciency is high intensity and low volume... like 5 max effort singles for a given muscle. now, each style of training effects each muscle quality, but in different quantities. for example, 10 sets of 10 will result in a high degree of sarcoplasmic hypertrophy, some sarcomere hypertrophy, and little or no increase in neural effeciency. 5 sets of 5 will increase all 3 qualities, but will effect sarcomere hypertrophy the most. max effort singles will increase neural effeciency a great deal, but will have only a small effect on hypertrophy of the sarcomere, and little or no effect on sarcoplasmic hypertrophy. so no matter how you train, you are likely to get both bigger and stronger... but the degree to which each quality is increased depends on the training. as you get more advanced, the picture changes somewhat. for example, if a highly trained explosive athlete, like a shot-putter, did only workouts of 10 sets of 10 for a month, he would get hypertrophy of the sarcoplasm... but likely NO hypertrophy of the sarcomere and would likely LOSE neural effeciency, simply because he was so highly trainind in this quality beforehand that 10 sets of 10 would not be sufficient stimulus to even keep what neural effeciency he had. also... for a beginner, doing multiple singles would likely lead to some size increases. but for an advanced bodybuilder it would not be sufficient stimulus to keep the sarcoplamic hypertrophy already present. now, as far as whether training for one quality helps subsequent training for another quality, the answer is yes. for instance, an athlete who is only concerned with explosive strength will still train at times with higher reps and experience some sarcoplamic hypertrophy... this "supports" later gains in sarcomere hypertrophy and neural effeciency by building work capacity (sarcoplasmic hypertrophy adds the neccessary ingredients such as cappillaries to the muscle to support high work capacity later in the training cycle, so the athlete can do a higher volume of work). also, a bodybuilder who is only concerned with size will do most of his work with volumes and intensities of training which favor hypertrophy of both the sarcomere and the sarcoplasm. but heavy work done to increase neural effeciency will also help... the ability to activate more motor units during an all out effort will make the rest of his training more result producing and effecient. as far as how to "cycle" these different types of work during a training cycle... well at almost all times during a training cycle you should do at least SOME work on each quality... if you totally neglect some portion of the muscle you will lose performance in that quality. however, you should shift your concentration of work from the least important quality for your sport over time to the most important. in other words... a bodybuilder might begin training for a contest 6 months away with more high intensity work, and gradually shift the emphasis over the months to more med. and low intensity work. a strength athlete would do the opposite. hope this helped in some way.

I am scared of failure. I have tried to gain weight before, but it never works out. Eat like a horse, but sweat it all out. And I have thin body structure, I used to starve in my childhood.

Dark moon : Nice thread

>.. ive been trying to get on this track lately as well.

Cold showers in the morning?? You are hardcore!

I also do the apple cider vinegar thing... Check this out , if you get some apple juice (pressed, not concentrate) to mix in with your ACV, you will hardly taste a thing !

..My ideal morning includes , waking up at 6, h20, stretch/yoga/meditate, fruit juice/breakfast, exercise , read/write/ play music, then start the day from 12pm.

I need to start sleeping earlier as well as cutting myself off from any food past 9. That is the hardest part of this whole thing ... Oh yeah , and limiting my cannabis intake seems to have the greatest impact on my progress in this healthy lifestyle thing.

Not my thread meng, just trying to contribute the best I can. But thank you, it's taken alot of time, research and getting to know myself to get into this routine.

That's definitely my idea of a great morning as well, though I need to start keeping a nutrition log I think, at the end of the night I tend to slack and eat alot more crap, justifying it with what was a healthy, active and successful day. But then I wake up regretting the shit dinner/night time snacks, perhaps cutting off the foods at 9 would help me too?

I'm probably going to be signing up for Muy Thai and Jiu Jitsu classes soon, they're scheduled at the gym for days I already have as off days from working out, and their exactly in the budget I'm looking for for such classes, seems to me to be quite a fortunate coincidence (if coincidences do indeed exist).

One thing that really helps me stay focused is, I wrote out all my goals and the beneficial habits I want to encorporate into my lifestyle on a piece of paper (everything from brushing and flossing every day, to working out, to not jacking off so much and beyond) and tacked it up on the wall beside my pillow, and every night before bed I read it, understand it, then go to sleep. Of course I take it down when the lady comes over, as it'd probably be pretty embarrassing for her to see that, but it really does help me stay in the right mindset to be a healthier more productive person.

Don't be afraid of failure Simms! That does you absolutely no good. All you need to do is keep with it, what were your goals? Were you eating well, or just eating? What sort of excersise were you doing?

Read the message I posted about Hypertrophy, that should give you a good guideline as to what sort of work out routine you should have to gain mass. If you want to put on weight, don't do so much cardiovascular excersises, IE: stuff that'll make you sweat. Eat like a horse and do heavy lifts. Bench Press, Squats, Deadlifts, Military Press will all help you gain mass, so long as you provide your body the right nutrients before and after the workout. You need to mow on as much protein as you can half an hour after the workout for maximum effect. Of course balance is necessary as well, you've gotta get those fruits and veggies too!
Nutrition is the number one factor in muscle gain and getting into shape, if you aren't eating well, then you aren't going to get the results you desire. Buying fresh foods isn't that expensive, I feed myself on 80 to 100 bucks every 2 weeks and I eat all fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains and deli meats. If your really serious about eating healthy, get a blender, a juicer, and a dehydrator and you can bring smoothies, fresh juices, and jerky and dried fruits everywhere and anywhere. I swear dried fruit is nature's candy, and to me tastes better than any sugary bullshit in the candy isle of the grocery store. Unfortunately all I have right now is a blender, but very soon I'll be getting the other two, I consider them essential kitchen appliances, I'm going to try making a DYI dehydrator, excited to try that. Homemade jerky is THE SHIT!

To save money, GROW YOUR OWN FOOD! In the summer I had carrots, broccoli, chives, bell and green peppers, and a few others growing in my backyard, and I had planned to build a greenhouse for the winter, but funds are unfortunately too short, though I've got a jar for change going towards said greenhouse next spring. I'll probably get a guerilla grow in the greenhouse too, a few dwarf plants so my weed is cheap, in sufficient supply for me and my roommates, and more importantly, organic and tasty! A dwarf plant can yield a few ounces every harvest, and that's way more than enough for my personal stash as my smoking habits are now to support it until the next harvest.

Rosstraining.com is my number 1 resource for workout stuff, study that site, become a member on the forum, the people there will help you alot. He has a book called Never Gymless that, while I've not actually read it, gets amazing reviews all across the board for being a huge resource for people on a tight budget that want to get in shape. Look up Movnat, parkour training, tire excersises and other stuff. You're backyard can be a very effective gym with just some old car tires, bags of sand and big logs.

Get creative, everything heavy can be used as an excersise tool. Look up lifts I mentioned above and more (do research!) and emulate them with whatever appropriately heavy items you can find, it's not perfect, as you don't generally know how much your lifting, but as long as your challenging yourself then there isn't a problem! It's very effective for those who don't have access to weights. Luckily my roommate has a bench, squat rack, and tons of weights, bars, and dumbells, but I know I won't be so fortunate in the future, and haven't been in the past, so I'm just making the best of them while I've got them.

I'm very sorry, I got to rambling and didn't stop. Hopefully some of that splurge of words is of use to some people.

I'm going to go rape my body with burpees and body weight circuits now..

Alright, so I didn't workout neither today.
I had kind of left aside that my parents were coming back from their trip to england, they came home with a bunch of stuff to eat, and I spent the evening with them.

However, I'm not really worried, I did plan everything out and eating that donut won't kill me. I'm not really looking for a spartan lifestyle, but more for a healthy routine - and like every routine, it has exceptions. No one should forget that! It's okay to eat pizza and drink shitloads of beer from time to time. It certainly won't help, but if you're able to stick to your routine, it won't hurt neither.

And Simms, why don't you give us your height and weight so we can figure out together what you could do to gain some weight?

Anyway, here's my schedule:

I consider that a very important thing is not letting the self-improvement thing becoming an obsession. Go easy on yourself, change progressively.

It would also be nice if the ones participating set defined goals like me, I'll include them on the OP. Telling the rest of us how it goes from time to time will certainly help, telling us that you're stopping because you failed or because you lost motivation, or reached your goals, would be nice too, instead of just leaving and never coming back!
We're here to help each other. This should be a committment, not a dream!

I did "before" pics, not sure about posting them though.
If anyone else is up to post pics, well I might think about it!

->DarkMoon:
If you're hungry at night, maybe you should try eating more, then progressively take out some carbs from the menu?
Drinking also helps, being busy too. If several hours are spent before you go to sleep, being hungry would be natural actually.
About Ju Jitsu and Muay Thai classes, be sure to visit both before you make a choice. I know some ju jitsu dojos are very self-defense orientated for example, they don't do that much physical training.
I considered the memo too, but I thought that if I make it a lifestyle I wouldn't need such a thing... we'll see.
Good luck reaching your goals!

I totally agree on the risk of it becoming an obsession. I've talked to people who even schedule how long they run hot water in the shower, and how many times they floss each tooth.
That's borderline OCD, bad news.

On a better note, I'm up to 20 burpees (several sets of 20), I could probably do more, but I had done a big series of body circuits beforehand and was a little worn when I got around to them. They kicked my ass though, what a great workout.

Kuka, would it be possible to outline some of your bodyweight routine? I'm trying to figure out a more solid routine, rather than just what I can think of off the top of my head at the time.

As an aside, some people here may be interested to look into Weighted Vests for their bodyweight excersises to amp up the intensity of the work out, do a search!

That's a good idea, I know I need to take out alot of carbs anyways. It definitely is natural, as I usually eat my last full meal around 6 or 7 and don't go to bed until 11-ish, and I know my tendency to overeat shitty foods when I'm just lazing around (IE at night). I'm having a hard time splitting up my meals from the classic 3 to 4-6 every day, it's just an odd schedule after 20 years of a "regular" diet.

And, luckily the classes are all at one place, with a full umbrella membership payment for all of them (plus kickboxing and MMA if I so desire), and I can do a trial one week membership for 20$. The martial arts are more just to put a function behind my muscles during the winter, I'm not working construction anymore, going to school and working at a pet store, so I don't get to gauge my strength much outside of the workouts themselves. Plus I need to learn some self-defence/strategic fighting anyways, it's been too long since I've been in a constructive physical environment.

In regards to the memo, that's exactly what I have it for, so these habits will eventually be engrained as part of my lifestyle, it's just a little psychological trick I'm testing on myself.

If I can find a camera I will certainly post "before" pictures, but that's the trick: I don't have a camera. Well... My phone does, that could perhaps work... I'll give it a try and post them if it pans out.

hey guys just browsing but another good way to work out is sand bag training and it costs about 3 quid. get a 20kg sack  (heavy duty) fill it with sand. work out by:

*putting it on the floor. crouching (knees bent back straight) bear hug it and pick it up, stand up straight and hold for a second then put it back down (always keep a straight back)

*shoulder press same as you would with a barbell but its a little more difficult with sand and it also improves your grip (most weight lifter have poor grip) just lift it from the ground. stand straight with it at your waist.. flip it up to the shoulder and then press it above your head.

*put it over your shoulders/back of kneck and do squats

you can do pretty much anything with it that you can do with a bar but can add your own SAFE AND COMFORTABLE variations  and like i say it wont cost you nearly as much as a set of weights and 20kg is a good weight to just get fit without over bulking... i think it looks a bit abnormal IMO but because its alot more difficult to grab it works the smaller muscles that you dont get just using weights without having to do stupid little tweeks and should crunchs and things

hope that helps just thought stretches and jujitsu everyday is a bit bland.... variety is the spice of life  dont mean to criticize

--------------------
I saw it was and it wasnt, i thought i had but i hadnt. i felt i could... but i couldnt... holy shiii man these are f*kin strong, i think ill just sit here till its over!

Wanna be part of this meams? I'll just leave the link to your thread if you want.

Well, as for me, things were going pretty well until yesterday... got nauseous after my exercices, and turns out that I'm sick! Could barely sleep this night, all shivery and sweaty. But I feel better, I hope I can go back to normal Wednesday.

About my workout routine, well, I could describe a few of my exercices, are you interested, DarMoon?

Sure, I'm down for adding myself to this progress thread.  I'll still keep all the details of my specific workouts in my Kettlebell thread, but i'll pop in here on occasion to give updates.

Ok, i'll join in here.

I am kettlebell training, currently doing the program minimum with a 40lb bell.

My diet is constantly improving. I eat primarily whole/natural foods made at home. I have successfully cut out junk food completely and eat out infrequently and remain conscientious when i do.

I have found  swansons fish oil, omega 3-6-9, Ginkgo, and ginseng to be an effective "mind/body" supplement system. Hemp seeds too!

My goals:

My still young routine has been recently disrupted, 1st by sickness and then by being a reckless fool on Halloween and getting beat up/sore/rundown.

I am going to keep in mind how easy it is to fall out of a routine, and try and avoid it in the future. Getting drunk and acting like a fool is not worth fucking up my sleep and workout schedule for a week ...

That's a tricky part of it all. I play in a metal band that does shows at bars, so that alone is alot of peer pressure to get smashed after a gig, nevermind the fact that most of my friends are generally still in that whole weekend warrior, partier lifestyle, and it's so so very tempting to jump right in and get smashed. Even though it really isn't worth it, and I know it isn't, it's just too damned fun. I've got to get out of the cycle, and I'm slowly breaking it, just takes time is all.

Tonight I'm doing day 1 of power lifting, so I'll come back in a few hours with my improvements on the bench press. Deadlift is up ten pounds last week though!

EDIT:

Post Workout, I'm pleased to report that I'm up 10 pounds from last time I benched, making it a solid 150 pounds (almost my full bodyweight)! I'm incredibly pleased with my progress, and this protein shake tastes damned well earned.

Kukaracha, I would be very interested in what your bodyweight excersise are, I'd love if you'd post 'em up for me.
I'll post my full workout schedule if anyone is interested, it was outlined for me by a friend that's been an MMA fighter for 2 years (and is one strong motherfucker). I definitely think it's a really good workout for anyone to start with (certainly works for me), and it pretty much covers the whole spectrum of strength, endurance, speed and just overall power. Let me know and I'll post it right up.

I am going to respond to this:

I have been reading very good things about this book: http://www.dragondoor.com/b28.html

Also interested in what anyone can tell me about Protein powders. I am wondering, do you lose your mass once you stop working out intensely, or does your muscle quickly convert to fat?

I have never understood the hype of protein powders - what are the benefits?

Feel free to PM if this is irrelevent to this thread.

I don't know how you call it in english, but I've got that thing that makes your stomach go crazy and everything you eat goes straight to the toilets. I might pause the workouts for now...

About my training routine, it's kind of hard to explain... here's a sample I found of the book! I have it, but no camera at the moment (110 exercices in total I think):

I'll try to get a camera and I'll post the workout routine, along with "before" pics.

Basically, I'm doing:
Dips
Pushups
More pushups!
Regular pullups
One-legged squats
Don't know the name, but it's basically a jump then a squat
Crunch
Cross crunch (your left shoulder touches your right knee, and so on)
A last triceps exercice named "K" (I think you can see it on the sample I posted)

The exercices I do are a bit different (they're not regular pushups, you try to get the most out of your bodyweight) though.
The idea behind this is progression, in weight but mostly in the number of repetitions.
You start at 6x5 dips, and every time you train, you try to add 1 rep per set (6x6,6x7). When it doesn't work, you slowly try your way up, and if it still doesn't work, there are other ways to go around that problem.

The book contains something like 13 levels, and the exercices keep getting harder.

However, you won't have a huge body mass with this, so I might do it this year then join my university gym next year. But if I'm happy with what I am next year, then no gym is necessary. I'll just make sure to keep what I have.

Ok I ate McDonalds twice, that was kind of a problem, and my university keeps me pretty busy... but my life is going up, slowly. Maybe I'll add a daily nap.
What do you recommend to someone who has trouble going to sleep in the middle of the day. People say "20 minutes" but there's no way I'm falling asleep before 15 minutes.

Update: after a rough start of inactivity, I've sorta got back on track.  I've been eating healthier lately, and I try to run every other day, plus do sit ups every day, push ups a few days a week, and some yoga asanas that seem to stretch out my body.  I don't wanna get jacked, just in shape for once in my life.  So far, I can feel my legs getting a bit more muscular, I'm hoping to tone my torso eventually.

I have been a complete slacker. I have been eating thanksgiving day leftovers, chinese take out and other un healthy foods. I have been addicted to my xbox 360 playing COD MW2.
I did however go on a several mile hike up a steep mountain yesterday. That showed me just how out of shape I really am. My knees on the way down felt like they were going to blow out (I've fractured them before).

I plan on doing sit ups daily, dips, push ups and chin ups. Not much of a runner anymore but I plan on doing stair work outs in my home. That should get me started.

I am in excellent shape and my knees hurt coming down a really steep slope for an extended time...it is due to the impact...not being out of shape. Now if you had a hard time going up....your out of shape...lol. I have been indulging the the Thanksgiving garbage too, but as long as I rock the kettlebells...muscle will grow. This morning I did a 20 mile bike ride.

I've had quite a hard time with my workout routine! Isn't going very well right now. The cold air outsides makes me pretty tired and I have to take care of the university classes... exams coming.
But I HAVE to be more serious. Seriously.

Ah, just finished my workout session.
It just made me feel so good, I did without any music on this time, and silence is actually quite pleasing. Sorry if I don't post very often too, one of my goals is to spend less time on the internet.
Now, a nice night of sleep...

Hey, I just finished my workout too Kukaracha! We're on the same wavelength despite being across the world from each other.

I was out sick for a while, took a week off working out, but I'm back at it and it feels fucking good. I made progress today, though I'm still at 150 benching, that's after 8 reps of 130 and 6 of 145, which I'm not used to doing so many (used to be just 3 reps of each, then raise the weight) so I am still making gains.

Because of plans to go backpacking/hitchhiking for a few years in the spring, I'm going to start trying to add as much bulk as possible, including fat, because I know there will be times when food is scarce.

So, after 16 mother fuckin days, I'm still at 150 max reps on the bench press. It seems I've hit a plateau, and short of just cutting the lift out of my routine for a while, I've tried smaller incriments building up to it, only lowering the bar a few times to get my muscles used to the weight, and nothing's working.

Anyone know a different way of working the same muscles for a while?

I'm still making progress everywhere else though, and I'm feeling great. Trying all sorts of new body motions and workouts to get all the support muscles and everything on my conditioning days. Feels damn good, and I find when I workout I'm much more inclined to eat healthily as well, and get proper amounts of sleep. Excersising actually acts as a catalyst for all of my healthy behaviours, including meditating and managing creative/sexual energies.

WOOT!

How's everyone else been doing? No one has added to this thread in quite a while, I don't want it to die!

Change it up. Try doing things like 1 set up 100 reps, or use a lighter weight than now but do 15 sets of 8-10 reps.

And other exercises would be the typical:
Dips
Skull Crushers
[Dumbbell] Kickbacks
Cable pulldowns
Push Ups
Dumbbell Bench Press
Flyes

Ditto.

I've started a daily bikram yoga practice and i feel like i get alot more out of every class i take (i've done 9 now.) I find it to be, ridiculously difficult and very rewarding. I have noticed positive effects both physical and mental.

I am also running again (i've been nursing my knee for the last few months) - so i am starting slow and going to build up a walk run schedule, still have my eyes on a Marathon this summer.

Being active everyday, making alot of gains. Definitely not experiencing SAD this year.

I advise everyone here a kettlebell.

Anyone and everyone can benefit from a kettlebell.

It's worth every penny and it's both a cardio and a strength training tool

Serious fat burn, boosts your metabolism like crazy and just a great work out. I use to go the gym and I use to do power cleans, dead lifts, benching, squats, leglifts, etc.

a 30 minute kettlebell workout completely demolished me compared to how I would feel after leaving the gym! I'm a kick boxer and I can definitely tell there's already a huge improvement on my stamina and my strength in WHOLE body. It's a great full body workout and can be fun too

Did I mention you can do it anywhere?

I second what feifen says. I used to lift weights - but KB is much more effective, strenuous and appealing/fun.

Keeping my routine has been kind of difficult for me. I was pretty busy, but now the semester is over - thank god. The weather is still very cold but now that I don't come back home exhausted everyday I might succesfully get back into it again.

Update: I've been eating healthy lately, but I haven't had much of a chance to exercise in the past month.  Besides walking, which I do a ton of, I have only set aside to exercise about 5 times in the last month.  However, that is about to change!  I'm at my parents new apartment for winter break, and there is a free gym for residents that has some good equipment.  I've only been here for two days, but I've already used the gym once and went on a jog around town.  I plan on going to the gym at least every other day, hopefully the majority of the days as I have a lot of downtime now.

I think I'll do weights one day a week (not really into weight lifting), and then just rotate between using the treadmill, elliptical machine, or the biking machine the other days; slightly increasing the duration each day (I started with 35 minutes yesterday).

I'm not quite in shape yet, but I'm hoping by the time I go back to college I will be.  I used to always be the "fat kid", now I'm kinda thin but still out of shape.  Still, at the moment I probably am in the best shape of my life and I have a lot more energy and contentedness than ever before.  I'll post another update before I go back.

Interestingly enough, it was my last LSD trip that made me really want to get in shape.  I realized that the body; like the mind; is a very powerful tool that is best kept healthy through whatever means necessary.  Plus, I started to understand the body-mind-"spirit" (perhaps this "spirit" is just an aspect of mind, or a total fabrication) connection.

Tip of Advice:

You can only workout as good as your shoes.
Get new shoes, superglue, and gel insoles...

superglue the insoles in your shoes and workout for outs with no odd pains in legs or knees.

Update:

I've worked out 3 days in a row!  I don't think that has ever happened before in my life.  In about 30 minutes I'm about to make it a fourth day.

Also, I think sometime next week (Monday or Tuesday) I'm going to finally go to a yoga studio.  The first class is free, so I've got nothing to lose.  I've did some informal yoga, thanks to the asanas provided in Ram Dass's Be Here Now and other ones I discovered online, but I'm looking forward to having an instructor verify if I'm actually doing the asanas correctly.

Good advice for those who run or perform other exercises that involve continued impact w/ the ground.

I workout barefoot, since it's all KBs, my feet stay glued to the floor.

Comment back about this. I'm going into my 11th class in 2 weeks, and am still realizing the not-so-subtleties about to perform the asanas properly.

Sure.  I'm going to my first class on Tuesday, I'm pretty excited.  11 classes in 2 weeks is awesome.  Does your studio have one of those "unlimited yoga" deals for a certain amount of days?  If I start to really like it I might sign up for that.  Do you notice any physical or mental differences now that you've been doing yoga for a bit?  I'm curious, especially since you just started.

Yeah, i've got 3 months unlimited for $250cdn, but that was a student special - it's normally $350.

I am laid off until January, so i figured id go as much as possible to learn the postures, gain discipline, and increase my flexibility. When i go back to work - i will be going 3x per week.

I was flexible to start with, but i am more flexible now with my hips especially loosening up. I felt the difference immediately all over my body, but it's less pronounced now that i am accustomed to feeling this way. Toning in my legs and abdomen is happening VERY fast and my balance/willpower is improving considerably

Ontop of that, it really helps the mind go into a deep state of relaxation from which reasoning/thinking becomes easier.

Update:

taking a break for Christmas, but I plan on getting back into it tomorrow!

I've went to the gym 7 of the last 8 days.  Last time I did weights for the first time in a while, felt good.  I'd like to get a bit leaner, but not really more muscular since I know I'll get lazy and then the muscle would just turn to fat.  Besides that, I've been doing a lot of running and using the biking and elliptical machines at the gym.

My first yoga class went really well.  The instructor told me I should focus on upper back stretches, so I've been doing the "down dog" and stuff lately.  I might buy the "unlimited 2 weeks of yoga" for new students at $30 sometime soon.  There are some interesting classes on kundalini, qigong, and tao energy flow, as well as just getting more into the asanas.

Good man.

I've been neglecting my cardio recently, discovered that when I decided to jog to work a while ago, I've got to work on that. Still at 15-ish burpees, as I forgot I even made that goal until I went through this thread again.
I got my hands on some sequence rings, so that'll be really cool to add in to my conditioning training.

How's everyone else doing? There haven't been as many updates as there should be. Doesn't matter if it's good or bad, just as long as your putting in some effort, posting my challenges/progress here has definitely helped me stay on track!

I reckon i've done around 17 sessions of Yoga since the 10th.

Today was a break through - the two postures which cause me tremendous difficulty improved alot, my balance, strength, focus and flexibility are improving by leaps and bounds. These are the two postures:
standing bow pose
standing head to knee

In addition, several poses in the sitting series were far and above what i've been able to accomplish before today. I am feeling accomplished.

(although i've been kettlebelling irregularly, and haven't run in probably 10 days!)

Hey PDU, I'm responding to your PM asap.

Good to hear Yoga's working out, I'm hopefully starting yoga classes pretty soon. Still tossed up between Jiu Jitsu/Muy Thai stuff or Yoga, both would be incredibly beneficial, yet are quite different from each other, unfortunately I don't have time for both right now.

Update:

on Sunday I hiked up to the top of a mountain.  It took me about 2 hours going up, and an hour coming down, so it was a good workout.  I jogged around at the peak a bit, and rested and listened to my iPod.  Awesome workout, I might do it once a week as it is only 5 minutes away from my parent's new apartment.  My legs were BEAT afterwards.

Today I did 30 minutes on the bike machine at the gym.  Then did some situps, leg lifts, and push ups.  Oh yeah, and stretches of course.

tomorrow I'll be doing weights.

Jeeze, i don't remember sending you a PM?!

I went with yoga because it allows me a flexible schedule and rather than having 1 set class, i can go to 1 of 4 classes a day. I figured the flexibility would allow me to stay more motivated and would increase my chances of success.

I am also interested in starting Muy Thai in the spring.

It seems like yoga would build up a fantastic base in the mind and body to go into muy thai with.

Haha, well I sent it off, so enjoy!

There aren't really any yoga classes around here with that many options, their all once a day, a few times a week sorta things. But perhaps I haven't looked hard enough.

All you guys have been doing really good!
Since not spending much time on the Shroomery was one of my goals, I don't hang here often anymore, but I'll try to come at least once every two days to update.
Keeping a workout routine during christmas has been very difficult actually. We had family over, and there was food just everywhere, anything you could've wanted. I believe at some point we were 30 adults in a family gathering in a park.

There's also a new thing in my life... a girl I love. I spend a lot of time with her, regardless of any other responsability. It's kind of a dilemma, but I just have to be strong enough to limit those moments. I'm torn apart between the fact that I want to be with her so hard, and the fact that I want to get my shit together and become a much better person since she deserves much, much more.

Goddammit, I though getting in shape would've been easy like it has always been for me. Guess this time it will require actual willpower.

Guys!
Happy new year to all of you.
Best wishes, but don't forget that the beginning of the year, of the month or of the week doesn't mean anything. If you want progress, free yourself from that, start now!

Hmm, I've been doing good -> getting a lot of cardio stuff on the eliptical and biking machines for about 45-60 minutes every day.  Either that or I go to the mountains for a couple hour hike plus some jogging once I get to the peak.

Now that I've turned a lot of my leg fat into muscle, I think I'm going to start working on my core.  I do weights once a week but it's to get lean really, not muscular.

And starting Monday I'm gonna sign up for unlimited 2 weeks of Yoga for beginners for $30.  I'm excited about that.

My diets been very good as well, lots of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, hummus, yogurt, water, etc.  I also take a Fish Oil pill lately which seems to be helping, I might start taking ginseng soon as well.

Stereolab - i suggest you take the liquid fish oil in order to get the recommended dosage for your body.

The health food guru at my local store told me "try taking 14 of those capsules everyday, to get what you need." Researching online has proved his statement to be true.

Seriously, if you think you notice results with 1 fish oil capsule. Try taking 2tsp of swansons fishoil everyday - you will be amazed at how it impacts your mind.
