Funnel Clitocybe edible?
    #11304254 - 10/23/09 02:44 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Been finding a lot of funnel Clitocybes. Pinkish/tan smell of anise. Are these Funnel Clitocybes edible as long as they smell sweet? I know I have found some other species that are pretty foul smelling.

Also what are the white Clitocybes that I keep finding that slime me with mucous every time I get tricked into picking them up?

Clitocybe gibba, the Funnel Cap, is edible and excellent according to Mushrooms Demystified.  It isn't recommended for beginners though.  Too many other mushrooms that aren't edible look like it.

There are also some toxic Clitocybe that could look similar to C. gibba.

I agree, caution is advised with eating Clitocybe, perhaps with the exception of C. nuda.

Or any other purple Cortinarius.  Though I am far less concerned about mixing those up because the spore colours are so different (pinkish, off white, buff for C. nuda, rusty orange/brown for Cotinarius).

Is the scent identification enough? I have found what I assume are Funnel Clitocybes that smell of sweet anise, and some similar but obviously different Clitocybes that smell acrid. Is the scent enough of an indicator for a positive ID?

I would say "no" seeing as most of the good identifiers I know often have a hard time with scent for identification purposes.  Not always, but enough that I advise caution.  The only Clitocybe I have tried eating is C. nuda.
