Beautiful images of such a rare and unique species, thank you for sharing my friend:bow:
I have noticed that you mention the interesting colouration of the inside of the stipe, the only other Psilocybe species I have seen this in are Weraroa novae-zelandiae and the other strange partially secotioid species I have found here in NZ, I think there may be other compounds in these mushrooms that cause this pigment, also you mention the blue staining reaction is not very noticeable, this is true for the two species I mentioned above, especially in W. novae-zelandiae, when observing the specimen I cultivated there would be blueing in the rhizomorphs at the base of the stipe one day then the next day it would be gone, very interesting!
As warriorsoul mentioned, it would be interesting to compare these with P. baeocystis and also P. aztecorum var bonetii, your collection could actually be the latter mentioned variety if it was found at 3000 meters above sea level!

Beautiful finds and images once again cactu, keep up the great mycology my friend!
inski..

I found them at 3600 meters.

I felt an uncontolable desire to get out of the car at that spot and just after the light faded, I busted out the cell fone light, and said a few words to the mushrooms, cactu style, and BINGO!
I learned more from that guy in 3 days than I have in 20 years of hunting mushrooms!  Thanks hermano, I'll see you soon.

Very interesting find Cactu! Did you notice the caps to be strongly hygrophanous? The description also mentions them easily bluing..Got a pic of a dried specimen?

Any preliminary microscopy done?

for sure , it was my impresion after seem many of the finds you guy make they look  more like even cyanescens and azurences, and cyanofriscosa , cyanofribrillosa etc. , and the baeocystis look really diferent in pictures.
when they are really wet look like stuzii too  with out a ring of course .

this is how they look when they are young and  humid

look the variation of a pin and a old specimen i dont know how much they last , but i guees like 5 days , when they are old and  humid they remind me of stunzii .

growind next to a log  of a plant of hight altitude

there where  twing and  branches and  log  for then to eat,

en la mañana todo se ve mas claro

this coprinus also grow there

si si  las mejores fotos de aztecorum en el internet solo aqui

the sum is rising more and more  the dew is going to evaporate soon

after el gwero pick all this you can notice how they are drying

iam loking at your thread  warriorsoul and  since that day  your find was very interesting to me, and got me hoping some day i found aztecorum , here we are few years later with more information and specimens to study , now i see the connection of this specie with the temperate wood lovers. i will quote you  to help get more discussion on the subject.

Workman i got my info here..
Variation, Distribution, Ethnomycological Data and Relationships of Psilocybe aztecorum, a Mexican Hallucinogenic Mushroom
Gastón Guzmán
Mycologia, Vol. 70, No. 2. (Mar. - Apr., 1978), pp. 385-396.

"Psilocybe baeocystis as I studied in the type (Sipe 754, Nov. 1,
1945 ; MICH) and in many collections made in the Pacific Northwest,
is very hygrophanous and, in some stages, quite similar in appearance
to P. aztecorum. The only difference found in the Mexican fungus
is in the shape of the spores in face view. In fact, the mango form of the spores of P. baeocystis is a good character which can be used to separate it from P. aztecorum.

It is probable that P. aztecorum originated from a subtropical
species such as P. mexicana Heim which has the biggest spores of all
species in the subtropics, (7.7-)8.8-9.9(-12) x (5.5-)6.6-7.7(-8.2) x
6-7 pm (from the study of the type in PC) and mycenoid fruit bodies,
but without a white pileus, some subrhombic spores, and terricolous
to sublignicolous habitat. Psilocybe mexicana, on the other hand,
seems to have had its origin from tropical terricolous species such as those recently described by the author from evergreen tropical forests, which have small spores and brown cystidia. Thus, it seems that species of Psilocybe have small spores and brown cystidia in the
tropics, moderately sized spores and hyaline cystidia in the subtropics and large spores and hyaline cystidia in the temperate or cold regions. This same phylogenetic sequence is observed in the size and complexity of the spores of Scleroderwza (Guzmin, 1970), which show small and simple spores in the tropics, as in S. sinnamariense Mont., and large and complex spores in temperate forests, as in S. hypogacuwz. Thus Psilocybe aztecorum is, in Mexico, one of the most highly evolved species of the genus, and it seems that P. baeocystis and P.quebecensis had their origin from this Mexican species, through two different phylogenetic ways, through the high mountains, Psilocybe cyanescens probably had its origin from some stirp of the subtropical species, close to P. mexicana. From this point of view, P. aztecorum var. bonetii is more primitive because of its smaller spores and presence at lower elevations."

The similarity to baeocystis is interesting.
Are all the basidia 4 spored like baeocystis or quebecensis?
or are they 1,2,3,and 4 spored like Psilcybe aztecorum?

Maybe this is a third distinct species descended from Psilocybe aztecorum that evolved parallel and seperate to quebecensis
with this scenerio the maine species could have an explainable resemblance to Psilocybe baeocystis from its initial split with
Psilocybe aztecorum var. aztecorum.

after seeing these pictures, my new favourite psilocybe is this and not because its revered and the strongest psilocybe there is, but because its a beautiful mushroom, for me, a close second is semilanceata, i could go as far to say i love this mushroom lol probably because ive had alot of experience with them and it never fails to suprise me! the different morphology of liberty cap, the more exciting the hunt in my opinion

cactu, you seem to have the most diverse range of psilocybe mushrooms ive seen on shroomery, a testiment to your beautiful natural habitat

im very jealous, hopefully one day i could go picking in your wonderful country)

Chasing old threads like this is a really exciting thing.

So many beautiful pictures! Has it been considered
making a pictorial book?

Mainly for the sheer enjoyment, but also useful in
showing variations in different species.

I know I'd buy one... :rasta:

Is aztecorum more potent that azuresens?

has there been a chemical workup on it?  Anyone know the numbers in percent of dry weight?

What are people's personal experience (if anyone on this board has tested them) with aztecorum?

It sure is a pretty little thing!  I wish we had those and zapotecorum here on the peninsula.
